Auggh, do we have to go through this every other year. Thanks for informing us Tschmack, that Gard is not Bo Ryan, he of the best big ten win percentage of any coach. No, Gard isn't quite that good, but he's still a damn good coach. Two years ago we went through this, and last year we were forced to suffer through another regular season big ten title, where Gard was named conference coach of the year for the second time in three years. But hey, he sucks. Even this year, they were looking pretty good until Wahl got hurt. He hasn't quite looked the same since he's been back. Count out Klesmit the last few games (think he wouldn't have made a difference against Northwestern), and the unfortunate loss of Neath early in the season, and the season hasn't gone as well as hoped.
Please don't confuse tschmack with the facts. His personal opinion is what really counts. That is all!
@ammo posted:Except for a very very few there are only 2 kinds of coaches: Those that have been fired and those that will be fired. So to predict Gard will be fired is really going out on a limb there.
Nobody would have thought Gard was in trouble prior to the Chryst firing. Now it's evident that the bar is higher. I think there's a very real chance that this team doesn't make the tournament and that could be it for Gard. I see a lot a parallels to the FB program except Gard will get to finish the season no matter how bad it gets. Recruiting ability is huge now that there is HS recruiting and the portal. Tschmack mentioned losing instate recruits. That's not only true but losing out on the Hauser brothers twice really indicates something is not working.
And if Gard is fired how many current Badgers enter the transfer portal? Lots of difference building a team that has 80+ players vs a team with 15 players.
In this day and age past success means nothing. It's like buying a stock. Ask Paul Chryst. Nobody is questioning Gard's ability to coach. But opponents have good coaches to. The missing ingredient is that guy that can get his own shot, the go to guy. Davis came out of nowhere last season to become a lottery pick. Nobody saw that coming. That type of player doesn't exist on the current roster. Essegian could become that guy but not yet. Gard is simply not a great recruiter. I'm curious if all the turmoil the team had a couple years ago is having an affect on what is happening. Davison was the only one that came back from that team when several others had an extra year.
So if all of these other teams have good coaches too, why aren't they winning big ten titles like Gard is, if he sucks so bad? Oh, and who recruited Johnny Davis?
Like I said, the past means nothing. Do you think things will get better?
Are you honestly saying that past performance isn't important? WTF? Fine, let me put it a different way. How would you feel if they fired Gard, and they told you that the new coach coming in had the 6th best winning percentage in the Big Ten over the last 40 years, was named the conference coach of the year the last two years, while leading his team to two big ten titles in that time? I think you'd be pretty happy. Good god, they're struggling this year. The man has earned the benefit of the doubt.
Ask Paul Chryst those questions. That's just my opinion. You have yours, I have mine.
Chryst was on his third straight subpar year. Start asking those questions in two more years.
