43 years ago, right now. I'm listening to the WTMJ radio broadcast by Ted Moore, and it still gets me, just like it did when I was 12.

Bart has just thrown his second TD to Boyd Dowler, a 43 yard pass on a third and one in the second quarter... the Starr to Dowler special. We're now up 14-0.

MAN, I hope we win our third straight NFL title!!!

Yup. Chuck Mercein is having a HELL of a game so far. So is Donny Anderson, especially considering the conditions... I'm glad they didn't postpone this game. Hopefully, that'll never happen in the NFL. Weather should ALWAYS play a part in NFL football.

WHOA!!! Herb Adderly just intercepted Don Meredith!!
Oh, man... Willie Wood just fumbled a punt, and with under 2 left in the first half, the Cowboys have it.

Field goal. Instead of just running away with it, at half time we're only up 14-10. This is not good.
StD, as I'm going back and learning about the Lombardi Packers, I did not know that Paul Hornung never played in the Super Bowl. He just missed it. He was still on the 1966 team that won Super Bowl I, but was injured, and did not play. He was retired by 1967. That makes winning those first two Super Bowls all the more impressive. Saint Vince didn't even have what many consider the greatest short yardage back in NFL history to help him.

The Lombardi documentary shed a lot of light on the field conditions, both the night before the game, and at kickoff. Wow.

Pretty amazing, isn't it?

Back in 1967, they play a championship game with the wind chill factor approaching 60 below zero. In 2010, they postpone a game with playoff implications because of a FORECAST of heavy snow.

Interesting, that the Ice Bowl is usually considered (along with the Colts-Giants overime game) as the greatest in NFL history. If it was played this year, would they reschedule it for Tuesday night?
Third down, inches to go. 17-14, Cowboys out in front.

Starr begins the count, takes the snap. It's the quarterback sneak, he's in for the touchdown, and the Packers are out in front 20-17!!! There are 13 seconds remaining!!!
Thanks, Starr to Dowler- that's the closest I've come to reliving the original experience as a nine year old huddled around a transistor radio with my brother. Living in Green Bay, the TV broadcast was blacked out. I had a neighbor who drove to Milwaukee so he could watch on TV. At the end, my brother and I ran outside and danced around like fools, screaming at the top of our lungs. No coat, no shoes. My mom finally shouted "Get in here, you idiots!"

A pleasure.

The greatest football game. Ever.

And now we postpone games for a snow FORECAST.

God help us in 2014. What happens when snow is forecast on the Saturday before THAT game in New York?!!! Or, God forbid, it's actually going to be COLD??
That's the way I remember it too Grignon (are you related to the fur traders?). My dad had it on his radio in his bedroom and the tension was so high waiting for the final play, I couldn't stand it. I would go running up and down the hallway because I couldn't stand still and listen patiently.
STD.....

Thanks to a "special friend" I shall listen to the broadcast in my car Monday a.m.---either to get over the pain of the season being over or to get pumped up for the play-offs.

Thanks for the cool re-creation (and thanks for the tape! )
The main thing I remember from the game is that the Cowboys 2 TD's were not of the sustained drive variety. One the fumble by Starr and the other the halfback option (Reeves to Lance Rentzel, I believe).

The other is that as the game progressed, the Packers offensive effectiveness just kept dropping.

When you factor in the extreme conditions, what a championship would mean, the fact that it was Lombardi's last hurrah (if we can call the SB anti-climactic and pretty much a sure thing), -and- the fact of the offense being progressively less and less effective...

the fact of the efficiency and success of the final drive is just astonishing.

Factor it all in and I believe it is the greatest game ever played. The fact that it is the Packers is nothing short of sublime!!!
One other thing and this speaks even more highly of the Packers is MAJOR KUDOS to the Cowboys, especially given their warm weather locale.

Major, major kudos to the resiliency of those dreaded Cowboys.
One of the greatest games every played. And to think, it wasn't televised life in GB. We had to all listen to the game on the radio, open the front door and hear the roar of the crowd when Bart went over. 43 years later, I remember the day and the game like it was yesterday. In our minds and hearts forever.

man... 43 years. Can you believe it's been that long?!
I was 9 years old and watching it in the living room with my father. Even at that young age, my heart was basically in my throat.

I was hooked...

Actually, I remember watching other games that year. Travis Williams with TWO KO returns for TD's against the Browns, the night game against the Cardinals because of the world series, demolishing the 11-1-2 fearsome foursome Rams who the week before destroyed the 11-0-2 Colts something like 34-7 (sacking Unitas something like 7 times) to tie them and take the Coastal Division crown.

Yup. I lived in Ohio at the time, and the Browns were the home team for CBS Sports at the time. So the first game of the year for the Packers that I saw live was the 55-7 win over Cleveland from the game in Milwaukee, with Travis taking the KO TWICE in one quarter for TD's.

MAN, that was a great year for (Packer) football...!

Do you know why women generally remember better than men? Because memories are usually attached to strong emotion and women are generally more emotional.

That being said, the Pack had the Ram regular season game won when late in the fourth quarter, Donny Anderson's punt was blocked. I still remember the guy's name - Tony Guillory. Attribute that to my own strong emotion. Late TD from Roman Gabriel to Bernie Casey.

Pack also had the Colts beat. I think Unitas had late game heroics.

Still, I remember watching the Rams annihilate the Colts. I was sure worried. Rams scored first and the Pack scored the next 28!!!
