Micah Hyde - full time punt returner

High praise from the HC.

"Micah Hyde, from Day 1, I think he's about as natural of a returner as far as handling the football that I've seen coming out of college," McCarthy said Thursday. "Charles Woodson is probably one of the best players that I've been around as far as handling the football on punts. Just very natural to him, and Micah is similar that way, so he just needs more opportunities."

He's a Football player. Thompson likes to draft football players.

Hyde isn't getting this chance simply because he's next in line after Cobb and Ross; he earned it with his performance in Green Bay's Week 6 win over Baltimore. In Hyde's five punt returns, he gained 68 yards while showing improvement as the game went on. Hyde started off that game with a two-yard return, improved to seven yards on his second attempt and then reeled off 23 yards, 20 yards and 16 yards on his final three punt returns.

Hyde can't just worry about punt return. He played 41 defensive snaps in Week 6 and has re-established himself as the Packers' nickel back. He played well on defense too, finishing with one sack, one forced fumble and seven tackles.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves.  I remember Hyde looking like quite the rookie in the first week against the 49ers.  I have no doubt he'll improve but he's a rookie and the questions about his speed that made him drop to the 4th round were evident in week 1.  When he's healthy, there is no question that Heyward is back in the starting lineup.

And yes, Tramon has no chance of coming back next year unless he takes a dramatic paycut.

If I had to guess Hayward is in nickle on anything over 5 yards, Hyde on anything under.  Allows Hayward to work himself in slowly, keep him from having to mix it up with the big heavies,  and let's him use his instincts to go after the ball.  Hyde plays the short stuff on the nickel and keeps McMillian off the field in the dime.  McMillian has time to look at his game and realize that passion and willingness to hit  alone isn't going to cut it at this level and work on cleaning up his head and technique.

Hyde and Hayward both on in the dime allows all kinds of fun things to happen.

Tramon still has skill but boy is he involved in a lot of little plays that become big plays.  He's on a long interception drought, too.  Last time he had one was week 2 in 2012 against the Bears.  When you see how many CBs the Packers are developing it's hard not to think part of that is trying to find out if they have enough that they can move on from his high paid salary and keep another player at another position that's on the upswing for the money they save (or pay Shields).

For all the gruff he takes about going young, TT makes guys that are earning big money continue to compete by bringing in young competition and then cutting the top heavy salary (Bishop, Woodson as CB) as soon as the position is solidified instead of waiting on them to recover.

"Troy, as we start the 4th quarter it's important to mention Micah Hyde appears to be bleeding from the area around his left kidney and it's pretty evident he's favoring it"

"Well you're exactly right Joe.... and if there was a game next week I'm not sure the NFL doesn't fine Micah for wearing a non matching color and for simply being a Green Bay Packer"

The moment things get interesting.

Hyde is serviceable. He won't muff a punt, which honestly for me is a low bar. But perhaps a luxury given they accepted the sub-mediocrity that was Ross for over a season before they dumped him.

Until Hyde returns something for a TD, or consistently is a threat to break big ones, I'm not ready to heap praise on him. Right now, he's the best option we have. And that's not saying much.

A far more impressive Hawkeye has been Daniels...a guy I was 100% wrong about last year. Thought he was another CJ Wilson...he's a stud.

He's too short. There's no making up for it. Eventually some genius OC is going to say, "Hey, that Hyde guy is short.  Maybe we could run out some big tall fat slow pig out there who can jump 1/2" and mismatch that dinky toy!"

Read the Green Bay media to get the real scoop on how football works. The Ravens tried to cover Finley with a 5'11" safety and it was a big mistake that they'll never make again.

I think the best thing about Hyde is that he's a consistent player.  You know what you are going to get.   He's a good tackler, physical, good instincts, etc. I also don't think you'll see him make many mistakes.

Still, he has some limitations (i.e. not very good speed) but as a backup DB he's a decent player and someone that can certainly help out on special teams.   Every team needs a guy like Micah Hyde but let's stop with any Charles Woodson comparisons on any level.   Woodson is a sure fire HOF player and he might be the best DB ever to play in the Big Ten.  Heck, he might be one of the best overall players (regardless of position) ever to play in the Big Ten.
