Indeed. Take any NFL team and remove their top 3 RBs

Then take away their top 3 CBs, then take away their top pass rusher. Then take away the number 1 tackler who is also the guy who sets the defense and makes the calls. Then remove both starting guards. And the starting LT. And for good measure, remove the starting TE and swap out the Center.

What you have left is an average NFL team struggling to find its way.

Excellent post @Satori.

Thank you.

Can you find me another team that lost its top 3 CBs ? No, you can't. That's why its a cop-out meme imo.

How would the Seahawks Cover-3 defense look without 3 starting CBs ? Well, they lost to the lowly anemic Rams with just 1 of them being injured, so that offers a hint doesn't it ?

When the Packers have the freedom to use their safeties as movable chess pieces, they can wreak havoc. When the Safeties have to babysit Gunter and Goodson, the defense gets gashed.

When Matthews is out, the opposing offense slides their protection to double Perry/ Jones/Peppers instead of Clay and the results are poor. Why has Perry's play dropped off recently ? Because he is getting double-teamed

Shields and Matthews are the two best defenders on the team and Jake Ryan is one of the most important. All out. Did you notice all the hand waving and gestures vs the Titans ? That's partly because Jake Ryan wasn't there to set the defense; instead a part- time player in Joe Thomas and a rookie Martinez had to fill in without any time to prepare. And they are working with guys like Kentrell Brice who just got here. That's tough to do on the fly.

Players matter, which is why teams have millions and millions invested in finding them. If all you needed to do was pencil-whip your opponent, then teams would invest in Madden games instead.  The difference between good teams and average teams and bad teams are a few select top-end players, the rest are all about the same.

All of these injuries happened within a couple of weeks and rocked the Packers to their knees, both on offense and on defense.  Now they have to get up off the mat and salvage the season. I'm confident they will; others feel differently and that's fine too. We all make our own sandwiches.

but pretty please with sugar on top : can we agree to dispense with the ****ing meme that "...all teams have injuries"  ?  Thanks

So injured CBs make the receivers slower? Was Eddie Lacy "painting the target" for Rodgers' passes?

The injuries make sense as to why the defense is struggling, but the offensive ****show was going on long before Lacy got hurt. Bak and Lang just went down last game. We've heard many times how the defense is built "to play with a lead" but the offense hasn't consistently provided any leads for going on two years now. Jordy getting hurt and Lacy's weight last year should have caused a bit of a slow down, but the offense shouldn't have fallen off of a cliff so often. That's on MM.

There's a big difference between Demitri Goodson not being able to cover as well as Sam Shields and Jeff Janis letting a perfectly thrown ball bounce off his face or Aaron Rodgers missing wide open receivers. Rodgers playing near his expected level makes an average team a strong playoff contender regardless of Goodson's lack of ability if he has anything even close to a competent cast around him.

Strongly disagree. Every offense needs to be able to have a couple games where they aren't in a shootout, especially this offense down to it's 5th starting RB of the season. This O should be able to have an lower production week where they score 21 or 23 and still win, but that can't happen when Demetri Goodson is playing significant snaps on D. They were in hurry up mode every drive against TN because TN was scoring so fast against our DBs.

We're not really disagreeing on anything, IMO. I'm not claiming Goodson's play doesn't add pressure, but we've seen so many times in the past where Rodgers mitigates that pressure with his play by it not having a huge effect on his production. We've seen numerous times where the defense has faltered under the weight of injuries or suck and he's still carried the team to competitiveness.  Heck, he didn't have jack squat for a running game until the playoffs during the super bowl run. That is not the case lately.

Disagree. To use injuries as the primary reason for the Packers decline only tells part of the story. The Packers have been sliding for over a calendar year, where both the offense and defense have struggled sigficantly, leading to a losing record. The offense is stagnant and the defense, along with out-dated coordinating, significantly lacks playmakers.

The RB position was struggling for some time before Lacy went down. Have never seen a team without RB on game day-  RB was bungled by Thompson.

Does the defense miss Shields and Matthews ? No doubt, but it shouldn't fold like a cheap tent without them. Randall and Rollins have been awful at times, so not sure they are the saviors, IMO Randall's  loss does have impact. Jake Ryan was just injured in the last game, same with TJ Lang and David Bakt, so the bulk of the injuries listed are very recent. Doesn't explain the crap play For many games before that.

"Why has Nick Perry's play dropped off"? Cause while solid, he is not an impact player. Cause he misses Clay, one of the few impact players on the defense - an aging star who has become unreliable due to nagging hamstring issues. Cause Julius Peppers is washed up. Cause Datone Jones is looking like he's nothing special. Cause Ted has not supplied the defense with a stud impact player other than Mike Daniels in the last 6 drafts . Where are the playmakers up front ? Aren't they pretty healthy with Daniels, Guion, Pennel, Clark, Martinez, Peppers, Datone Jones, Elliott, Perry, etc....Woud sure help the poor secondary if someone not named Matthews or Daniels would make some plays.

Injuries suck, especially when the defensive roster talent is so limited.
