Let's put it this way, if Favre had been hurt in say, week 12 of 1996 and McMahon would have taken over, there's a decent chance that '96 Packers team doesn't win it all as great as they were in so many areas. For the Eagles to have gone on the run they have with their backup QB shows me they are a damn good team to have made it this far regardless of how it goes in the Super Bowl.
Huge difference between McMahon and Nick Foles. McMahon was in his 16th season whne with the Packers, Foles is only in his 6th. Lots of miles on McMahon at that point. He was beat to near death in prior years. Foles only played in 3 games in 2016 and saw limited duty this season until Wentz went down. He is well rested and fresh and not beat to hell. So IMHO the Beagles can win it all and Foles will be the reason.
Worth mentioning: No return man in years has had a season like Desmond Howard did that year. And I suspect no returner had a playoff run like he did.
That Packers' team was loaded. If Robert Brooks hadn't gone down they would've only lost 1 game. As it was 13-3 wasn't too shabby.
And Boss, I'm taking Edgar and Dorsey over the Eagles current backs. Devastating in pass pro and the receiving game, and both terribly underrated as runners. Edgar's mud game in the playoffs was astounding, then Levens tops him by destroying the Panthers in the NFCC.
Talk is cheap. But now the Eagles have the opportunity to validate their claims.
Fly Eagles Fly!
Or not.

I'll never forget him costing the Packers a turnover on the second half kickoff because he was in the locker room changing his muddy uniform.

Or it shows how diluted the NFC was this year.
The Iggles are solid in every facet, with the only variable being QB. They lost to KC 27-20 in the second game back when KC was playing lights out (how'd that turn out?!), to Seattle 24-10 when Seattle was desperate, and both those games were on the road. They lost late in the season to Dallas 6-0 at home when Foles was 4-11 for 39 yds and a pick. Since they also had HFA, they put in Nate Sudfeld (who?), a sixth-rounder to finish the game.
Remember, we all thought the Vikings were solid too, especially their D, until NO and then Philly ripped them. Philly is solid and how they do in the Superb Owl depends on Foles.
Comparing teams across era's is tricky but in each position outside of offensive line I think Gb is a clear winner.
Nobody in his right mind takes Carson Wentz over Farve!
The running backs are closer but Levins and Bennett are better than Blount and Ajay!
Robert Brooks& Company were much better than Alshon Jefferies group,
TE group is close but Jacskon &Chumura is better than Ertz Burton.
OL belongs to Phila by a wide margin!
DL Even though Cox is a stud there is no way the Eagles group matches the 96 Packers!
Linebackers are probably a wash in spite of the different systems (3-4 4-3)
DB's easily the Packers quarter (Newsome-Evans, E Robinson and L Butler ) were light years better than the Eagles quartette and Special teams not even close! So while I am rooting for The Iggles no way they are better than the 96 Packers!
I like Foles. He's really good. I think he can make a difference. Belichick has always been good at taking a teams best offensive option away, but I see PHI as really balanced. More balanced than the two previous teams NEP beat to get there.
MichiganPacker posted:Pederson is probably the same stuff Geronimo Allison is. The 1996 Packer team had a still close to his prime Reggie White (a top 5 DE in NFL history), a Holmgren-controlled Favre in his prime (the Holmgren version at this point was top 10 QB all-time). That's two Hall of Famers right there. That team probably had the best DL in Packer history (between Reggie, Sean Jones, and Santana Dotson they had 360 career sacks and Gilbert Brown was the other guy). Leroy Butler should be in the Hall of Fame. Keith Jackson was a 5 time Pro Bowler at TE. Newsome looked like a guy who was going to be a perennial pro bowler at CB. And, Desmond Howard had one of the top 10 performances by a kick returner ever.
It's usually the team with 2-3 great players that win championships (I think Cliff Christl was right on this one). That Packer team had three guys in that category - Reggie, Favre, and Butler. The 2010 Packer team had Rodgers and Woodson (and probably an underappreciated at the time Nick Collins).
The Eagles starting QB had a decent rookie year, but he's still a guy who couldn't play until he was an upperclassman at North Dakota State because he couldn't beat out the guy who played in high school at Waupaca.
Don't forget Matthews. Guy's been a First Team NFL All Pro once, second team twice, and a six time Pro Bowler. If he has anything left in the tank going forward, he's got a good shot at going over 100 sacks, and could get into Canton.
I thought Clay had a shot earlier in his career, but I don't think he's been nearly as dominant in the past couple of years. He's also spent a lot of time injured and other than Terrell Davis, they usually don't make the Hall. (And there will be a backlash against anyone else after the outcry about Davis.)
The Packers had trouble with their run D. They moved CM3 inside and the run D got a lot better. That was '14 IIRC. He's an impact player, some times fans don't see the impact.
I like him inside as well. I think part of the reason he gets hurt is that he's constantly going up against guys who are a lot bigger than he is and he gets caught up in the wash. He can run, and I think he'd make a bigger impact in the middle than on the outside. Get an outside guy in the draft, move Clay inside with Martinez.

I have the dvd set of the NFL Top 100 players in NFL history. It came out in 2010 and was sponsored by The NFL Network. I love it, by the way and watch it all the time.
Here is their Top 10 all time.
1. Jerry Rice
2. Jim Brown
3. Lawrence Taylor
4. Joe Montana
5. Walter Payton
6. Johnny Unitas
7. Reggie White
8. Peyton Manning
9. Don Hutson
10. Dick Butkus
I know Deacon Jones came in at 15. Bruce Smith is the next DE at 31.
Anyway, appreciating this is an inexact science, Reggie White may not be just top 5 DE, he may be the best ever and besides Deacon Jones, it may not even be all that close.
If Pederson wants to talk stupid, then I want the PATS to win.
I wanted the Pats in it just in case the queens GOT in it. (yeah right)
Now I'll pull for Pedey but I wouldn't bet on it.
Lawrence Taylor is the most influential defensive player of all time. He changed LT.
Reggie White is the best defensive player of all time. He dialed up 6 sacks when he was 39. After 15 years.
Itâs those two on the pedestal. Then everyone else.

Holy sh!t, I hope Pedey keeps him from giving Foles any tips.
Eagles coach Doug Pederson is calling in an old friend to talk to his team before the Super Bowl.
At this morningâs press conference, Pederson said he was inviting Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre to talk to his team Saturday. Heâs going to visit with players early in the day, but wonât be a part of their final team meeting Saturday night.
Pederson was Favreâs backup in Green Bay from 1995-98 and 2001-04, and the two have remained close over the years.
And Favre does have some pertinent experience, as his championship ring was earned against the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI.
How do you feel if you are Carson Wentz and the Eagles win the Superbowl without you?
He's obviously not going anywhere, but unless he can bring them back right away, does that lower your value?

I remember that. Andre Rison grabbed his helmet and went out for the kickoff because he noticed they were short one player.

The last thing Favre needs to say is "........ you guys can do anything! you guys can just throw balls into a crowd and complete passes, .......".
Not going to work vs NE.

That is a good question. He might think that if Foles can win a SB, how hard can it be? That might be the worst thing for Wentz.
Winning Super Bowl is team achievement. Even if Foles does it & Wentz doesn't....That doesn't make Foles a better QB.
Somehow, someway....I just think the Patriots are going to win.
Watch your "private practices" Eagles!!
There is also a difference between QB'ing your team to the #1 seed over the course of 16 games and doing it for just a couple games after a bye week. Even though it was the playoffs. Something tells me BB and MP are going to be better prepared for Foles than MIN was.
But I don't have a line on the game yet. PHI seems to have a lot of mo' and there is "less tape" on Pederson's offense than a typical SB team. Should be a good game.
After how Pederson dismantled Minnesota in an entirely different manner than they beat Atlanta, and how he held the team together after Wentz went down, I'm not going to underestimate Pederson's coaching ability. I think he changes things up again since BB has now seen the RPO, and keeps the Pats' D off balance with a mix of RPO and other stuff. It's going to be up to Foles to carry out the new plan. If we see guys running around open and Foles misses them or he holds the ball too long, etc., then it could be a long day.
In the end, I think the Eagles could win this.
I think, judging by the quotes Viking players put in the press, they spent the week after the victory over the Saints celebrating the "Mini-soda Miracle". It almost seems that they forgot about the upcoming game until about Thursday or Friday before the Eagles game. By then it was to late to get into a game playing mode. The Vikings were so sure they were playing in the SB, they started to talk about which locker room they would have. The media thought they would win over the Eagles being a team of destiny. Everyone was so positive that MN was a shoo in that I am surprised I did not read about how the game should not be played. So it was all set up for the blow out it was. You can bet NE won't make that mistake.
The take away here is (if your the Vikings) be careful about what you celebrate as your SB. And no matter what the past success is, forget it until the SEASON is over.

I am not a fan of Jim, but I think the '96 Packers would have won it even with him at QB.
When talking about the greatest defensive players of all time, LT & Reggie should top the list. Charles Woodson and Ray Nitschke deserve mentions here, as well.
I'd throw Dick Butkus in there too. But LT & Reggie are the leaders.

He can say whatever he wants. That doesn't make it accurate.
I will say they are a pretty good team.
The Eagles have the guys up front on both sides of the ball to get the job done. That's really why they won yesterday. Foles was rarely hurried, much less hit. The DL was able to get to Brady in the first half and rattle him without blitzing. In the second half Brady got a rhythm going by changing to the short, quick passing game to get Gronk involved but the Eagles' DL just kept coming and never gave up. They just kind of wore down the OL of the Pats to the point where Brady was sacked but just once (a big once!), but he was uncomfortable in the pocket and threw some really bad balls.
The Packer defense of 1996 would have never allowed the Patriots to throw for 500 yards.
Eagles are a good team congrats on winning it all.
You're nowhere NEAR as good as the 1996 Packers. But hey...thanks for beating the Patriots.
The Packer defense of 1996 wasn't hampered by the post-2004 rules making pass defense much more difficult.
**** Peyton Manning and his incessant bitching after the 2004 AFCCG.
