Indianapolis - The Sporting News has named Packers GM Ted Thompson its executive of the year for the second time in five years.

A panel of 32 coaches and executives chose Thompson for the award this season. Thompson, with 14 votes, finished ahead of 49ers G.M. Trent Baalke (7), Texans G.M. Rick Smith (5) and Bengals president Mike Brown (3).

Thompson also won the award in 2007 after the Packers went to the NFC Championship game. Both years he won the award, the Packers were eliminated by the New York Giants in the playoffs.

If the Giants win Sunday, it will mean both times they were eliminated by the eventual Super Bowl champion.

Here's an excerpt from TSN writer Clifton Brown's story:

One thing I forgot to say... 19 straight wins and a 15-1 record, it's entirely possibly we may never see another Packer team do either of those things for the rest of our lives. That doesn't mean the Pack won't have some great seasons ahead, but 15-1 records and 19 game win streaks are so rare in history, that seeing either one again will be pretty dang special.
I'm just surprised he didn't get it earlier...

We were 15-1, we still have one of the youngest rosters in the league, and most of our guys are still on their way up in terms of talent. Reminds me of 1960... we lost to Philly that year in the NFL Championship, but if memory serves we had a pretty good run following that.

The biggest difference here is that we were NOT expected to go anywhere last year, and GB was EXPECTED to win in 1960. Watch this team be the team of the decade...!!!

My only quibble with what you said is that I do think they were expecting to go somewhere in both 2010 and 2011. The injuries in 2010 certainly put a damper on those thoughts at mid-season, but to start the year, I think just about everyone thought they were a true championship contender.
In 2011:

Team opens playoffs on the road at hostile Philadelphia in the Wild Card round, containing the Eagles’ explosive offense en route to a 21-16 victory, Rodgers’ first playoff win as a starter (Jan. 9).

The Packers travel to Atlanta to face the NFC’s No. 1-seeded Falcons just six days later for Divisional matchup. Green Bay routs Atlanta by a score of 48-21, the second-largest margin of victory in team playoff history (Jan. 15).

Packers complete their road playoff march by making the short trek to Chicago to face division-rival Bears in the NFC Championship Game (Jan. 23). Just the second postseason meeting in the history of the two franchises, the Packers win 21-14, punching their ticket to Super Bowl XLV in North Texas.

In the organization’s fifth-ever Super Bowl appearance, the Packers square off with the AFC’s Pittsburgh Steelers at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas (Feb. 6). Packers win Super Bowl XLV.

Packers win 19 straight games and set a franchise record with a 15-1 season. They also become the 2nd highest scoring team in NFL history. Thompsons number 1 pick Aaron Rodgers sets an NFL record for QB rating in a single season.

Yep. No way TT deserves to be Executive of the Year this season.

Brown also struck gold with the drafting of Dalton and the WR. Been much maligned and deservedly so throughout the years but he did a nice job this year. The fact that group was even in the playoffs says a lot for the job he did (as well as the staff).

Or maybe it is because he overpayed AJ Hawk and let the better of the two ILB go?
I dont see how TT can win this award this season. No way!!

And Cindy Crawford has a zit.

He's built the best roster in the league with one of the top 5 coaching staffs.
