The orgies and the steroids may have a role in this, but I think it's more likely he's body has just broken down from overuse. Essentially the guy has been playing golf full time since he was about 3. Most guys don't start playing that much he had until they are in the early teens or maybe 9 or 10 years old. He's 39, but has had the equivalent number of reps that most pros do when they're 48 or 50. He had his first of several knee surgeries in 1994. He's most recently had back surgery. He's also torn his Achilles tendon and had an ACL reconstruction. I think his downfall was playing in that US Open in 2008 on a broken leg. He won that major (his last one) but he's really never been the same since. He needed to sit that one out and let his body recover.

I agree he's a complete douchebag on a personal level and deserves a lot of what's coming to him, but he's at worst the second best golfer ever. He was the best person at his sport for a solid 12 years and for most of that time no one else was close.14 majors, 79 PGA Tour wins, etc. He's still someone that 50 years from now people will talk about having seen in person. The womanizing certainly hurt his marketability, but I don't think getting exposed on that is what lead to his downfall. He's just physically shot.

I think one of the most interesting stories that may happen in 10 or so years is that he'll have another run at the Masters. I think he could sit out a year and come back and be decent at the Masters. He finished 17th there this year when he's been awful almost everywhere else and he's never missed a cut there since he was pro. A 50 year old Woods could end up in contention on the back nine on Sunday (sort of like Watson at the British Open a few years ago). What will the reaction be? Will people still hate him?
