Canon 20D with 70-200 f/2.8L IS + 2x extender for most of the shots.
Canon 30D with 24-70 f/2.8L for the wider angle and closer up shots.

Both these dSLRs have 1.6x multiplier type sensors though, so with the telephoto I was effectively shooting at a focal length of 640mm (35mm film-equivalent).

Whoa. Great pics. Your photos get better and better every time.

Loved the cheerleader shot.

You have some professional looking shots in there. Great work, thanks for sharing!!!!!!

Thanks! I appreciate the kind words.

By the way, I would have had some more cheerleader shots except that there were already a couple morons in the crowd mumbling things like "hey, with that lens, I bet you could get some good shots..." (you fill in the blank) and with my wife sitting next to me I didn't want to draw any more attention to us than I already was with the big camera setup, even if the intent was to take tasteful shots.

I would like to see as many players in a play at a time.
Just asking.

Sure, of course it is, the nature of the photograph is up to the photographer. To do this, one would use a wider-angle lens and decrease the aperture sufficiently to obtain a sufficient depth of focus so that all subjects of interest are sharp.

But why would you want to do that? Generally, unless the photo is a landscape, group portrait, or other similar type of shot, cropping in and isolating the subject of interest generally makes for a more compelling photograph. I suppose I could have taken a thousand shots from my seat where you could see the whole field with every player on it, but I doubt those would be considered very good pictures.

Especially in sports photography, where the action is typically stopped with a fast shutter speed, focusing solely on the subject of interest (with a long telephoto) and blurring the background of the photo (with a large aperture) is the standard. Take a look at any sports publication, in print or online, and this is generally what you will see. Although, I'll throw the caveat in here that many times good photographs do not conform to the "rules".

Or am I missing something...is there a specific reason you ask? If you're just looking for shots of each play to analyze the locations of each player etc, that would be pretty easy to do from the stands. That's what the teams do during the game to analyze formations etc. And if that's you're interest you'd probably be better off a little higher in the stands than in the first row where I was for these shots.

Just don't try to take any video of the action! Eeker

I see St. Vince is back with his woman. She was MIA for a long time.

She was wearing quite the outfit

They were sitting about 8-10 rows ahead of us. Very interesting to say the least.

Wasn't she usually dressed as a green and gold nun (from the convet of Our Lady of the Two-Minute Warning)?

What, no acknowledgement for bringing back a good shot for you this time??? misc
Wow, Brian! These are awesome! I especially liked the pics with some of the D players clutching Favre's jersey trying to pull him down!! LOL!
Do you do this professionally?

I've been at games and tried to take pics with a D20 (70 - 300) but always found that I spent too much time thinking "photograph" rather than following the game! If you can do both together, thats terrific!

Whats the chance you'd be willing to share a high resolution shot with some of us on x4? I'm thinking something like pic # 40

Thanks! Yeah, I like the series with the D-line chasing Favre too...I missed the end of the play though where he tosses a shovel pass to get rid of the ball before being sacked.

To answer your question, I have a "day job" so photography has been mostly a hobby over the last couple years. But in 2007 I have started transitioning into doing it professionally part-time as opportunities present themselves.

If you're interested in a high-res file, please send me a PM and indicate what you want it for. Thanks.

Brian, you may have addressed this before...where are your seats? Some of the shots look like you're at head level with the players, and (to me at least) some look almost BELOW head level.

AMAZING pictures.

Thanks Paul!

We found a couple first row tickets for $125 at Fuzzy's Titletown Tickets and we snapped them up. So we were in the first row, at about the five yard line on the north end of the Packer's side. Made it a lot easier to shoot the game, both for angle of perspective and not having to worry about people standing up in front of us every time something good happened. The only difficulty it caused was that when the action moved down the field away from us I had the tendency to want to stand to shoot but of course then that would have blocked the people behind us. Hmmmmmmmm....sounds like I'm pretty picky, eh? Guess
I just won't be satisfied till I'm shooting from the sidelines! Big Grin
