US Patent Office Cancels Redskins Trademark

It begins. This is all the incentive they need to change that name. I feel sorry for all those Chinese counterfeiters, in the interim. They are about to receive some serious competition.

If this goes through and is not overturned on appeal, Dan Snyder and the NFL look really bad here.  If they were smart they would have seen this coming a mile away and got in front of it, even holding a press conference showing unity with the Native Americans who were pushing for the change, saying that it was a collaboration in the best interest of all and it's a new age in the NFL where they no longer tolerate discrimination, Michael Sam, etc. blah blah blah.  Now?  They'll hold some awkward press conference akin to a forced apology.  Just terrible business decision by Snyder and NFL to let it come to this.  

What about the Kansas City Chiefs?

Snyder's use of word "never" re team name is a tough word; puts him in a continued defensive posture.

 

Have always thought only pressure to matter with Snyder is from other owners/Goodell, not from government/Reid/patent office, etc.

They should change the name to the Washington Scumbag Politicians and have the logo be your least favorite politician (I'll pick Harry Reid, since he was in the news yesterday saying he wouldn't go to the games until they change the team name, but if you want to pick somebody from Team Red, go ahead -- or better yet, have one from each side of the aisle) dressed in a dominatrix outfit whipping the constitution.

Maybe call them the Washington Scalpers.  The logo would work and it would fit Washington in more ways than one.  Maybe they give them the "Redskins" name back. 

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out in the court of appeals.  Anytime lawyers get involved, every word in the Patent law will be scrutinized.  If it does prevail, I think there might be a lot of unintended consequences.

 

I do like that Washington Warriors logo.   Danny Boy should realize how much new money he could rake in with that new logo selling his merchandise.

 

If Danny wanted to sell jerseys he'd name the team Washington Gets Nothing Done and retire off t-shirt revenue in short order. 

 

Interesting that Fed-Ex has been silent on all this. Their name is on the stadium. Tells me they view this as a which hunt but still paying attention. 

 

Prevailing radio talking head point I've heard today is no one would be able to start a franchise today named Redskins.  Might be tougher to launch a new brand if you wanted to name it Coke. 

 

This entire thing is an attempt to stumble a successful billionaire. They may succeed but Danny will win.
