I just don't think US Soccer is going to get any big name to take the job. There are too many things lacking for someone not used to the US: the feeder program(s) is uncoordinated and not the same as other top countries'; it's probably the fifth sport after the NFL, NBA, MLB, and even the NHL; and besides less money, the prestige and exposure are far less than other places. It's getting better, yes, but it's not there yet.

Yes, there's the WC in two years but that will only start to draw more to the sport, and it will be years before that reaps any real benefits.  The USWNT got Hayes because a) the money is better here, and b) the US women are light years ahead of the men in prestige and exposure.

I don't want an MLS coach to take over; while some good coaches might be excellent in the future, the international and big-game experience and consistency aren't there yet. It will be an interesting decision, and whoever is chosen has only two years to get the ship going in the right direction.

Any MLS coach, especially Cherundolo, would be "learning on the job."

That's why they needed someone like Klopp...while he hasn't had international club HC experience, his skills and motivation transcend that...like a Pep Guardiola, or Ancelotti. Hell at this point I'd take Jose Mourinho...

They don't need a coach who is going to be here for 5-8 years...they need a coach that knows how to manage a team in a World Cup and rent him for 2 years. If it goes beyond that, great. If not, at least they tried. That's why I like Renard...dude has buckets of international experience...and his teams win.

They fucked up not hiring Marsch after the WC.

This. Marsch took the Canadians with half the talant of the US to the semis. They made Argentina work for their victory, and the stats were almost dead even as well. Canada just missed on one or two shots that could have made that game really interesting. I was impressed how well Marsch had them playing and in shape the whole tourney.

Marsch really wanted the US job. He sounded a bit bitter, yet "I told you so" when asked about the USMNT troubles in one interview I read. (He didn't say that, but you could read between the lines.) I think Marsch would have been a really good fit here.

Disagree on the half the talent part. First of all, their best player is better than our best player. An argument could be made that their second best player is better than our best player. Canada have some talent and they are well coached. Not sure how we let Marsch get away.

Top to bottom, Canaduh shouldn't have more tallant than USMNT...a country of 60M, and most young men there play hockey. Davies is an outlier...he should be playing for Ghana.

USMNT could have had Jonathan David too...he was born in Brooklyn...but the people in charge were too busy chasing after Mexican kids born in the US because they thought they'd play for El Tri. None of them have panned out for us either.

The talent gap is narrower than it's been, but there are enough kids in this country playing soccer...we have way more talent than Canaduh has top to bottom.

USSF still fucking around...this thing just feels like the fix was already in for an MLS guy who is still coaching and they are waiting for the season to be over to make the announcement. All these names like TT Henry, Patrick Viera and Jogi Loew are just click bait.

Well, they have world class drone pilots.

It seems every Euro team worth their shit has one really good Ghanaian player on their squad. Spain has Nico Williams, England has Mainoo, and Italy? Well, you're all basically Nigerians, aren't you?

Davies is the second best North American player I have ever seen. The goat is Hugo Sanchez, and it is not even close there. Amazing player.

The USMNT has to find an Emma Hayes -- or maybe they should have hired Hayes. She has the USWNT playing smart soccer. I thought the knockout game against Japan was going the same way as the final they lost to Norway in 2000.  Japan tried the same park-the-bus tactic, but instead of crashing forward and running into the teeth of the D like they have in the past, they played the patient game until they found Rodman with a bit of space. More than 1,000 passes for the game, with Girma making 105 in the first half alone.

Now we should see how good Hayes really is since she's played her starters an awful lot. Germany won't be easy, and then they most likely would face Spain. That's a test...

Hayes is world class...but USWNT is a world class job. It's like a men's coach being hired for France, Brazil or Spain.

USWNT never should have fallen off, but their lazy fucking development staff stuck by a bunch of old players whose better years had passed them by, and passed up on developing younger stars. Hayes won't be hanging on to people like Rapinoe well after their sell-by date.

USMNT will be challenged to hire a comparable coach because there isn't enough money to make up for the lack of talent the USMNT has compared to the top teams.
