I feel like both the USMNT and USWNT have taken a big step backward while the rest of the world has moved forward two steps. Somewhere, we are missing something in the development phase. Currently, most players go the college route, much like football. But, the coaching at the college level -- all college levels -- is really bad, to be honest. It's painful to watch the games. The majority of coaches are stuck in the kick-and-run days and/or the slow-way-down-control all the way and not the modern game of quick passing and quick movement. There needs to be a concerted effort to get coaches at all levels better trained.

Also, the NCAA shortchanges soccer teams in terms of time. While D1 football teams start training 34 days before the first contest, soccer cannot start until  16 days before the first game. While football allows up to 20 hours per week, soccer is only 10 hours a week. Football season can be a month longer than soccer season. And then in the spring along comes spring training. Spring is also abbreviated for soccer vs. football.
