Walden named NFC Defensive Player of the Week
Posted by Tom Fanning on January 5, 2011 – 10:34 am

Packers linebacker Erik Walden was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Chicago Bears this past Sunday.

Walden, who signed with the team as a free agent on Oct. 27, posted the first sacks of his three-year career as he brought down Bears QB Jay Cutler twice in a 10-3 victory that clinched a playoff berth for the Packers.

Walden also recorded a career-high 16 tackles (12 solo), which matched the best total posted by any Packer defender in a game this season. He was part of a defense that limited Cutler to just a 43.5 passer rating as he completed 21-of-39 passes for 168 yards and no TDs with two INTs. It was the third time in the past nine games that the Packers prevented their opponent from scoring a touchdown.

Walden’s two sacks were part of a six-sack day for the Packers, which matched their single-game season high (Week 1, at Philadelphia). It brought Green Bay’s season total to 47, which was tied for No. 2 in the league. That is the best ranking by a Packers team in franchise history

A street free agent picked up a little over 8 weeks ago makes NFC DPOW.

Dan Compers. Your unbelievable.

Spot on Boris. Again one of my biggest fears in that our defensive coaches are going to be targets for other teams this offseason.

This with Clay Matthews, Zombo and Jenkins missing starts. And with Barnett, Jones, Chillar all on IR.

These asst's I hope are getting some nice bonuses come the off-season. If not sooner.
And to think Adalius Thomas was still available? Confused

James Harrison was waived by Pitt and turned into a star. Who knows, maybe Walden becomes a stud LB. I liked what he showed out in space too. He's got a quick first step around the tackle.
As impressive as his red zone sack was, the one he got on the delayed blitz was almost as good with perfect timing and a great burst. Love his energy and motor and hope to see quite a bit of him in the game in Philly on Sunday.
really how does this happen?

I don't understand. Is it the system, untapped potential, desire? How do you go from being a guy on the street to the best defensive player in the NFL(for one week) in the matter of 2 months.

i am amazed.
It keeps happening in GB, so I have to give a lot of credit to the coaches too

Zombo was a nobody hoping to stick on a PS
Walden was at home
Tramon wasn't drafted
Cullen Jenkins was passed over 250 times
Jolly was a 6th rounder
Bigby was cut by 3 teams
Shields couldn't catch a punt or cover a sneeze

We are so fortunate to have the staff, system and attitude to turn these guys into players on Sunday

In another matter, the NFL reviewed the Bears game and credited LB Erik Walden with three sacks instead of two. Howard Green got one taken away. Walken was also credited with 16 tackles, which was jacked up from 11 by a review of the coaching staff.

Seems hard to believe the gameday crew missed five tackles.

Then I guess we need to go all the way, so that all the other teams have filled their openings before our coaches become available!

47 sacks? Pffft, that's all Clay Matthews.

Absolutely agree. As previously mentioned, Green has performed as well. The emergence of Peprah has really impressed me too.

Kudos to the players but like you said, at some point you gotta look at the coaching staff. They've been lights out.
