The XFL has suspended operation and laid off nearly its staff. Conflicting reports as to whether they will return in 2021.

From ESPN:

The XFL suspended operations Friday morning and laid off nearly all of its staff, multiple sources told ESPN. While a handful of executives remain employed, the league currently has no plans to return in 2021.

The league canceled its season last month after five games as part of a nationwide shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, pledging to return next year.

But XFL CEO Jeffrey Pollack changed course Friday, conducting a 10-minute conference call to inform employees of the news.

Commissioner Oliver Luck, hired in 2018 to guide the most ambitious spring football league in decades, did not speak on the call. It was not immediately clear if he is still with the leagu

According to a prominent former XFL staffer who was on the call, Pollack stopped short of saying the league was going out of business. But the strong implication was clear. "It's done," the staffer said. "It's not coming back."

However from SI:

"All players will be paid their base pay and benefits for the 2020 regular season," the XFL said in a statement on March 12. "The XFL is committed to playing a full season in 2021 and future years."

But the XFL could have taken the following measures:

1) People could have sold their cars to keep their teams afloat.

2) They could have passed the hat to raise money for their teams.

3) They could have sold meaningless sheets of paper - know as stock - to people (who would now call themselves owners) to raise money.

4) There are other avenues like: bake sales, sale of team paraphernalia, etc.

5) They could also play some easy teams to build confidence, pad stats, and build a legacy.

I will say they didn't do themselves any favors when they named the league "XFL".  "X" means former - as in former league.  Or it could mean crossed out.  What were they thinking?  (Rhetorical question)

I guess the owners of these teams are nowhere near having enough money to sustain operations without some kind of revenue coming in.
I hope they are sincere about paying the players what they are owed.

Otherwise, meh.
I still wish the NFL would develop a league with "farm teams" much like MLB.
Put the onus on colleges to educate students instead of developing athletes.
