Green Bay -- Bryan Bulaga wants to play sooner rather than later but doctors are being cautious, coach Mike McCarthy said Wednesday. The injury list started to clear up a bit. Linebacker Frank Zombo returned to practice for the first time since suffering a broken scapula Aug. 19 before the preseason game against Arizona. Running back Ryan Grant (kidney bruise) is also practicing.

Here's the rundown from McCarthy.

On Zombo: "We'll see how he comes out of practice today. It was good to have Frank out there. He was a limited participant to start but he obviously took a number of reps. So how he responds to today will determine tomorrow and so forth. It was great to see Frank back out there."

On Bulaga: "Bryan Bulaga is not real happy with our doctor right now. So he's ready to go and he's champing at the bit. So we're going through the process, the hurdles, of rehab. Bryan feels very good. It's just something we continue to talk about in here -- how the players feel and how the medical staff feels. We think he's due to get back on the field soon. He's getting close. I think if you went in there and asked him, he'd feel like he could play."

On Grant: "Ryan looked good today. It was good to have him back out there. He's ready to go. I thought he practiced well and was back to his old self. He looked good."

Buluga chomping to Play

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said right tackle Bryan Bulaga is champing at the bit to play, but team doctors are being cautious with him.

McCarthy said Bulaga is getting close to being ready to play. He also reported that linebacker Frank Zombo was a limited participant in practice today and that he wasn’t in pads but rather “protective gear.”

Other highlights from McCarthy’s presser:

*Game against Falcons will have a playoff feel.

*Aaron Rodgers has worked hard and has received good coaching. It’s a combination, but it comes down to the player wanting to put the work in.

*Didn’t feel we did good job of finishing games the first three weeks. Thought we did better vs. Broncos but we still had two fourth-quarter turnovers.

*Playing in dome is different than playing at home. Stating the obvious. Significantly louder in playoff game last year than in regular season. We’re preparing for playoff type noise level.

*Impressed with Falcons defense. As far as secondary, they’re competitive bunch, very physical. One of better pursuing defenses we face. Very aggressive and fundamentally sound.

*I would think they would be motivated after playoff game. We are fully expecting and looking forward to competitive football game.

*Haven’t seen Nick ‘Collins but I am told he is doing well.

*When you’re injured as player, it may not directly affect you, but continuity that comes along with practice is important. We’re young, we thrive on getting better as year goes along. Staying healthy helps you. Injuries make continuity a challenge. Not making excuses for injuries (like Woodson and Matthews). Young players need to practice every day. WE do have some veterans that are banged up. Woodson not as young as he used to, but he can still go out there and play at high level.

Green Bay – No sling, no problem.

That was the key to Frank Zombo getting back on the football field ASAP. After breaking his scapula during the pre-game warm-ups of Green Bay’s preseason game against Arizona — and playing that game — Zombo faced an 8-12-week timetable.

Six weeks later, on Wednesday, the outside linebacker was practicing again. He wore a sling only for one day. Zombo wanted to use the shoulder blade as much as possible. Now, the linebacker says he is ready to play Sunday in Atlanta.

“The doctors and trainers believed that the more I use it, the more it stresses the area and my body will realize it’s weak and send more resources to the area,” Zombo said.

So right away — two days after the injury — Zombo opened doors with that arm. He used it while he was driving. He didn’t want to “baby” it for two weeks, he said.

Other players commonly use a sling for this injury, Zombo said.

“I would think so. It’s at the base of your arm,” he said. “I knew I had to be back quick so I tried to use it a little bit everywhere I went.”

Initially, the shoulder hurt. If he winged his arm out too far or rotated, it stung. He knew this was the quickest way to get back, though. A week and a half after the injury, Zombo was running. Training-wise, with strength and conditioning coach Mark Lovat, he hasn’t felt restricted.

Now, Zombo hopes to play this weekend. The reverse approach worked.

“If they needed me to go, I could easily go,” Zombo said. “It is completely up to them. I don’t know when it’s going to be.”

Generating a consistent pass rush was a problem last week for Green Bay against Denver. With time to throw, Kyle Orton sliced an early 21-3 deficit to 21-17 in a hurry. The Packers had only one sack and three hits on Orton. And while this is one reason for Green Bay’s 31st ranked pass defense, Zombo defended the team’s linebackers.

According to him, he'll have to earn back his playing time.

“Everyone bases it on sacks,” he said. “But Clay’s getting great pressure, there’s no doubt about it. He’s disrupting quarterbacks…and Erik’s holding that edge strong. It’s not all about getting a great pass rush. We need to keep contain. We have other responsibilities besides just getting sacks.

“Both of our linebackers are doing a great job. It’s going to be hard for me to get snaps because they’re doing a great job.”

So he wasn't in pads, but was wearing ... a cup? ;-)
I've stopped asking with regard to MM's & the doc's approach to injuries but it would be awfully nice if Bugula can start on Sunday.

Green Bay's OL (especially Clifton) does not tend to play as well on turf. It's a faster surface and the advantage usually goes to the DL. An inexperienced Newhouse at RT and an aging LT worries me more on turf vs Clifton/Bugula combo.

On the flip side, getting Zombo and Grant back is most definitely good to hear.

Road turf is the hardest because the combo of the fan noise and the speed of the turf swings the advantage to the DEs

The OL has to have a synchronous launch to run effectively and the crowd noise makes it really tough. Rodgers will be working the hard count on Sunday night

Just a guess....I don't think Bulaga is gonna be ready to go
Always seems like Clay has some sort of ailment that prohibits him from training camp or weekly practices. He shows up on gameday though so I'll give him a pass.

He's starting to remind me of a guy though... Big Grin
