Yes.
The Packers' SB45 team had a player from Western Michigan (Jennings), a player from Central Michigan (Frank Zombo), and a player from Eastern Michigan (TJ Lang).
They got the win but honestly they were totally on the ropes and thatβs a cause for concern.
First and foremost, I came away extremely unimpressed with the DL. The DL was probably the weakest position area on the team to begin with, and while WMU has a couple of solid backs, they were able to move the ball pretty easily on Wisconsin. What sucks is the injury to James Thompson Jr. is the one they couldnβt afford to suffer but maybe Tressel will go to more of a 2 or 3 man front and add another LB or DB as those areas have a lot more quality depth.
As for the OL, I have no idea how they get hyped up as much as they do but they were mediocre at best yesterday. Jack Nelson is the Graham Mertz of the OL. Highly rated but shows up small time and time again. The interior OL struggled to open holes and JVD was pressured way more than he should have been.
Which gets me to my next point which is WTF is Phil Longo doing out there? We donβt need our QB rushing 10 times a game and you have to figure out ways to get our WRs the ball more than 4 yards down the field. I also think for as good as Mellusi and Walker played they have to look at one of the younger RBs they brought in with Dupree or Jones. At least as the 3rd option. Acker gives you nothing and they need more explosive plays.
The Badgers survived but unless they play and coach a lot better this is probably a 6-7 win team. They play like this against Alabama in 2 weeks and itβs a 30+ point loss.
Solid analysis.
This sums it up perfectly for me.
I surely donβt feel better seeing U$C and Alabama win this weekend. Coming into this season I thought the game against the Trojans might be gettable but not so sure anymore.
They are likely going to get throttled against Alabama. That wouldnβt surprise anyone but Iβm just not confident with the trench play and when you look around college football all of the decent teams are elite in at least one if not two areas (offense, defense, special teams, coaching) and just about all of them have a really good QB. Iβm not sure Wisconsin has any of that going for them.
I still think Fickell deserves more time, but Iβm losing favor with Phil Longo fast. I absolutely hate the way he calls games.
lost identity
I didn't see the game last weekend but I did follow it online and was shaking my head the entire time. But there there were quite a few teams that started out slow in week one which will happen in college football.
But, at the same time this is the type of game at home you should come out and take them to the woodshed and get your depth chart some real playing time.
I am very much on board with giving Fickell some real time to get this turned around because is working on turning what we are used to at UW and transforming it to an RPO offense. He also is recruiting way better overall than other UW coaches have so I do think there is some real optimism for the future.
The Alabama game is interesting to me. Bama very rarely heads up north to play (even if its only September) and they play UGA the following week. If the UW fans and team comes out flat I think they absolutely take UW to the woodshed. But, if UW shows up as we have seen UW do it at times and play hard I think they could give Bama a battle.
BTW I still hate Fox for making this a big noon game.
