Saw Kiper and the boys on ESPN this morning breaking down the draft for the Pats whom have the 24 and 28th picks in the first. Kiper said that a good pick in those spots for their needs would be a LB like Willis and a safety like Nelson. I thought that Pack would be lucky if Nelson got to 16...now they are talking of him being taken late in the round. Did something happen that I missed on this kid?

A lack of intelligence, and the "one year wonder" factor are holding him down. He answered questions about his speed recently, but he's not an elite speed guy. The guy is a playmaker .. he'd be a good fit for the Packers in my opinion. The Pack really needs a big play guy in their deep secondary.

I wonder now though if Brandon Meriweather might not have passed up Nelson. Meriweather is a better atlete, and is thought to have cornerback coverage skills.
They're similar players really, Meriweather and Nelson.

Having watched Nelson a lot (which means nothing I know) I think he's an impact guy.

I didn't watch MIA much..who would? However, Meriweather stood out at the Senior Bowl practices/game.

The advantage of those guys IMO...and a guy like CB D. Revis from Pitt...is that they contribute immediately as a nickel...maybe win a S spot.

Revis also returns...

Anyway, I like all those players but think only Revis and Nelson are worthy of the 16th pick (b/c Meriweather has had some off-field stuff...and I'd be wary of "the U" players who managed to stand out in that regard).

I think both Nelson and Meriweather can play corner.

That's a pretty good breakdown IMO. Revis wouldn't be bad. He's very physical. Nelson is a hitter and has a pretty good nose for the ball. Although I hate to draft a guy with character issues like Meriweather, there's no denying he's a 1st round talent who will be around in the 2nd.
The thing that has always worried me about Nelson is that at Florida he was routinely 20-yards off the line of scrimmage at the snap of the ball. Every week the commentators would remark that they couldn't believe that Nelson lined up that deep in the secondary. Certainly it helped his perspective because he was able to easily see everything being that far back. In the NFL he won't have the luxury to line up like that. I think it's a legitimate question. It's not that I dislike Nelson, I have him as a top 20 overall value on my board. But two months ago when people were putting him at or above Landry's level, Nelson was never that type of top 10 overall potential type prospect. I think the absolute highest he would go would be to the Packers at #16, and I while I don't think it will happen, I wouldn't be shocked to see him slip into the early second round area. He's a good prospect, but there is enough uncertainty surrounding him to possibly push him down a bit.
