I was cussing out the new GM for the Packers, when I heard he traded a 1st round pick for a fricken 3rd string QB from the Falcons. Then I went to UW-L to study for a Math class peeved that the Packers had 2 1st and 2 2nd round picks in the upcoming draft, and now we have an unproven 1st time head coach, and a 3rd string QB, and single picks in the first 2 rounds

I remember thinking Wolf should've given up a 2nd, not a first rounder.

We all know the story now. Herock didn't want to part with Favre. Wolf & Herock were friends so Wolf gave him the 1st rounder. Wolf even mentioned later how he initially offered the 2nd round pick.

We've had 2 quarterbacks since that date. TWO!

(Not counting the first couple games Majik started that season.)
Thought this was the "move of the franchise", even though I couldn't pronounce his name. Knew he had a cannon arm and a sense of humor. Figured he was an MVP in waiting and an eventual HOFer. Knew he had a penchants for INTs, but also knew he'd make way more big plays over his career. Saw him as a durable QB, and once he got the starting reins, you'd be able to pencil him in every week. Figured he'd have a long career in GB, but thought he might end up elsewhere to finish his career a la Montana. Also had him pegged as a guy who would send Polaroid pictures of his junk to people...mostly because digital cameras weren't really commercial back then.

Nothing surprising to me 20 years ago.
I was teaching my brand spanking new second wife the art of love making and how to treat a husband like he deserves to be treated by his woman,it lasted one full year then she left to show other men the sweet lessons I had taught her, they are still smiling at the memories. Wink
Considering the other players GB had given up a first-rounder for in my time (Hadl, Jefferson, Cade), it seemed par for the course -- mortgage the team's future on a high-risk player. What the hell, they had nowhere to go but up in '92.

Been there myself, Bill. Never heard it expressed quite so eloquently, though. Well played, sir!
I was excited to see Wolf & Holmy come to GB. I was so immersed in my work at the time, I did not know about it until I called home. Then I got an ear full. I was skeptical and only started to think maybe he was the answer when a guy at church came to me toward the end of the 1992 season and was saying how good he thought Favre was. He was not a Packer fan but had a way (or knack) for seeing a diamond in the rough a mile away.
Where would this deal rank among the most beneficial trades in GB history? I'd say right at the top. Here are my 10 best Packer trades in which the team received an active NFL player:

1. 1992: 1992 D1 (Kevin Smith) to Atlanta for Brett Favre
2. 1960: A.D. Williams to Cleveland for Willie Davis
3. 2000: Fred Vinson and 2000 D6 (Tim Watson) to Seattle for Ahman Green and 2000 D5 (Joey Jamison)
4. 1959: 1960 D4 (Bob Jarus) to Cleveland for Henry Jordan
5. 1965: Dan Currie to Los Angeles for Carroll Dale
6. 1995: 1995 D2 (Andrew Greene) to Miami for Keith Jackson and 1995 D4 (Jeff Miller, later traded to Miami for Mark Ingram)
7. 2007: 2008 D6 (Ryan Mundy) to New York Giants for Ryan Grant
8. 1959: Marv Matuszak to Baltimore for Fuzzy Thurston
9. 1959: Billy Howton to Cleveland for Lew Carpenter and Bill Quinlan
10. 1996: Matt LaBounty to Seattle for Eugene Robinson

Honorable mention:
1964: Jim Ringo and Earl Gros to Philadelphia for Lee Roy Caffey and 1965 D1 (Donny Anderson)
1971: Don Horn and 1971 D1 (Marv Montgomery) to Denver for Alden Roche and 1971 D1 (John Brockington)
