Best--Moody Blues (twice--Milwaukee and Boise), Bob Dylan, The Who.

King Crimson.

OK--Grateful Dead, New Riders, Joni Mitchell, Jefferson Starship, Country Joe McDonald, Michael (Martin) Murphy, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Kenny Loggins, Canned Heat with John Lee Hooker (at Snoopy's in Madison, sat about 15' from John Lee!).

Disappointing--America (played like they thought they were a metal band, and that's not why I went to see them.  James taylor (we saw him the week after he made to cover of TIME magazine with "Fire and Rain."  It was the only tune of his that he knew, and he played at the UW Fieldhouse and refused to play it.  "That song's too personal, he said."  Okay, but it wasn't so personal that it was played every day for millions of radio listeners?  Give me a break!  Ritchie Havens (I swear, he was so high his lyrics made no sense. )

Bucket List--Want to see Clapton before I die.  Or he dies.  Whatever.

The 3 worst off the top of my head would be Violent Femmes, the Bodeans, and Hootie and The Blowfish.   Under the right circumstances, probably would have like the Bodeans more, but happened to be sitting near a bunch of idiots.

Enjoyed Todd Rundgren, Van Halen, Stone Temple Pilots, Metallica, many others.  I've seen a lot more middling type artists than truly great ones.  Wish I could have been to the Paul McCartney concert here in Milwaukee.  That sounds like it would have been a great time.

BEST:  KISS (1979), Van Halen (1980), Judas Priest (1984), Deep Purple (1985), David Lee Roth (1986), Journey (1986), Huey Lewis & The News (1987), Def Leppard (1987), Boston (1987), Ozzy (1989), Metallica (1989), Whitesnake (1990), Jane's Addiction (1991 Lollapalooza), Alice In Chains (1993 Lollapalooza), Steely Dan (2000), Rush (2002), Joe Satriani/Dream Theater/King's X (2002), Megadeth (Gigantour 2005), Symphony X (2007), Extreme/King's X (2008).

OK:  Molly Hatchet (1982), .38 Special (1984), The Cult (1990)

WORST:  ZZ Top (1986).  They simply recreated their moves from the videos and played along to backing tracks.

The best concert I have ever been to was The Clash at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. Another great one at the same venue was Susan Tedeschi, Johnny Lang and Buddy Guy. At Alpine - Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy. Night before Stevie died.

Rolling Stones, George Thoroughgood at Sun Devil Stadium in 1981.

Grateful Dead did a surprise show in Madison in the mid-80s between Alpine and Minneapolis. Played at Dane Co Coliseum. easily the best Dead show I've ever been to.

Disappointing were Stones in Indy Hoosier Dome, John Mellencamp (worse than disappointing. It sounded like they just play an album and he lip synched the whole thing. Maybe he did). And so many more that I have erased them from memory.

Best show(s):

Impromptu - Stevie Ray and Jimmie Lawrence Vaughan at Steamboat 1874.

I had just moved to Austin after 3 years on the road mixing sound for a soon-to-be-forgotten band off the east coast. I had hopes of continuing my career as a sound engineer in Austin when I stopped by Steamboat 1874 for the clubs locally famous Monday Night Live show. I had been told it was the place all the musicians went to and just jammed - figured it was a good place to make connections. There was a 3 piece house band (drums, bass, rhythm) and various artists would get up and play 2 or 3 songs. Sometime around 11:30pm the Vaughan brothers stepped on stage. I was told it was rare as they were both building their own followings with Double Trouble (Stevie) and The Fabulous Thunderbirds (Jimmie). I did not really know their music at that point. After being blown away by their 30 minutes on stage and finding out the sound guy that night was working for beers, I decided to go back to school. (There was no cover for MNL @ Steamboat).

Ticketed concerts

I'm a Todd Rundgren fanatic so these are likely biased.

(1a) - Todd Rundgren's Utopia - Riverside Theater MKE 1975 - (Setlist: Utopia Theme, Sunset Blvd./Le Feel Internacionale, Last Ride, Seven Rays, The Wheel, Real Man, Born To Synthesize, Death of Rock and Roll, Eastern Intrigue, Initiation, Fair Warning, A Dream Goes On Forever, Hello It's Me, I Saw the Light, Freedom Fighters, Something's Coming, Heavy Metal Kids, Open My Eyes, Sons of 1984, Do Ya, Couldn't I Just Tell You, Just One Victory)
(1b) - Todd Rundgren - Gruene Hall (TX) 2012, Gruene Hall is the oldest Texas dance hall (> 100 yrs) with a capacity of 800 about 40 miles south of Austin. The evening was billed as "The Unpredictable Todd Rundgren" - With a 4 piece band backing him he played "all the songs you'd request, if we played requests"

(2) - Gentle Giant at the Oriental Theater, MKE 1977 This concert was originally scheduled with Dr. Feelgood, but the date was changed (don't recall why) and as a result, Dr. Feelgood did not appear. There was no support act. Some ass a few rows in front of us managed to get Derek Shulman's attention by constantly yelling out for the band to play the Allman Brothers' Whipping Post. Towards the end of the show (their last in NA for the 1977 tour) drummer John Weathers made fun of Milwaukee claiming to be the beer-producing capital, saying American beer to be substandard compared to British beer. To drive home his point, he walked right into the audience handing out bottles of Guinness Extra Stout. This was the only GG (headlined) show in MKE as far as I know.

Worst - Springstein - 4 hours I'll never get back. Would have been a decent 2 hour show if he had just STFU with his BS stories between songs.

Best:

Queensryche: Operation: Livecrime Tour in the 80's. They were so tight it was incredible.

Sonia Dada: Simon Estes Amphitheater in Des Moines circa 2004. When the group's founder and main songwriter is one of the richest people in America and has a Law Degree from Northwestern I can see where the ability to dabble would lead to eventually moving on but damn they were good.

Kiss: Asylum Tour in the late 80s. Eric Carr rocked and Paul Stanley's voice was amazing for about an 8-year period.

Corey Stevens: Blues Fest in Saint Paul in the mid-90s. Three-piece on the Road To Zen Tour and he only had about an hour to play his entire set. Almost no talking just direct segues and quick count-offs from tune to tune.

38 Special: Moondance Jam 2011. I saw them with Honeymoon Suite openning back in the late 80s and they were good Don Barnes and Co. really brought it this time.

Collective Soul: 2010. I went in with modest expectations and was blown away by how good they were.

Styx: Moondance Jam 2008. I was always luke warm on them as a band but they were surprisingly great outdoors in '08. Todd Sucherman is an amazing drummer and Tommy Shaw still sounds great. They had a lot of energy for an aging band.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd: Walker, MN 2008 Another group I had open expectations of. They were energetic, no frills and very, very good.

I used to see a lot of concerts but these are the ones that really stand out in my memory.
