Shields needs to step up tackling...

Green Bay - Sam Shields' woeful tackling after three games potentially has given Jarrett Bush the opportunity for expanded playing time on the Green Bay Packers' defense.

Joe Whitt, who coaches the team's cornerbacks, is not pleased at all by Shields' inability to tackle.

"He hasn't made the big play or anything, but he's covered really well," Whitt said Friday. "He's just got to tackle. If he doesn't tackle we've got to look at something."

The Journal Sentinel has Shields down for six missed tackles, three more than anyone on defense. Whitt suggested that he has charged Shields with more than seven.

"You can't have three missed tackles a game," said Whitt. "It hurts the structure of the defense. Our corners have to tackle. Period.

"Is he ever going to tackle like ( Charles) Woodson? No. But this kid has a special skill set. He has to get them on the ground. There's no ifs, ands or buts about it. He understands. We've talked."

A year ago, Shields missed 11 tackles, fifth most on the team. Whitt said his tackling wasn't acceptable early in his rookie season, but he was more than physical enough down the stretch.

Shields said he realizes that Whitt is trying to develop him into a complete cornerback.

"He's so worried about the tackling part of it," said Shields. "I don't understand, but I do have to tackle. That's a part of the game.

"It's not that I'm scared. It's just that, hey, I missed tackles. It's not just me missing tackles. It's something I do have to work on."

Shields readily acknowledged how tough Woodson plays, saying, "I get it. I get it. I'll start tackling this Sunday."

Very rare you ever hear a MM coach call a player out. 3 games in there is plenty of season left. But I do admit Sam's reaction is not what I'd want to hear...

Whitt sees Shields potential and is pushing him hard to get the best out of him. Didn't like Sam's comments, but I think even he understands why Whitt is doing this. He's had nothing but high praise for Sam since the Packers brought him in. This is a good position coach motivating a talented youngster to keep working hard and bringing his A game to the field

WTF don't you understand? Tackling is as 101 as it gets in football.

This kid has plenty of talent. But pretty obvious Whitt is not going to put up with any crap from him.

Best he listens up and does what Whitt says.

Or we're going to see a lot more Bush. Eeker

I don't think he doesn't understand tackling. I think he was upset at being called out and "doesn't understand" the extremely high level of play he is expected to have in GB. It seems like he might think, "I had good success last year. So I've missed some tackles! We are 3-0 this year. I don't understand what's the big deal."

That's what I get out of it, especially when he says, "I'll start tackling Sunday." That clues me in that he knows he can and should be playing better. Calling a guy out in the media, which almost never happens in GB, also should tell Shields that he better get a clue or grab some bench.

I hope he maximizes his potential because he has such a huge upside.
Well, Shields didn't start tackling today. He did have a nice INT; he was foolish to attempt the return, IMO, unless he felt he had to because the pick happened outside the endzone, but did manage to make a big play out of it.
My guess is he's just a little too full of himself right now. It's like he is too dependant on his speed to make up for gaffes in his technique, and has become 'lazy' applying himself.

He's probably 1 guy that was hurt by the lack of an off-season. He pretty much gets by on just absolutely incredible athelticism, but to take the next step he needs to refine some things. Didn't get the chance to do that in the off-season and now he's going to have to sort of re-learn things on the fly. His athleticism is tremendous though. If the light ever turns on for him, look out!!!
