Games 1 - 3 the offense averaged 32 pts w/127 yards rushing per gm, 257 yards passing per gm, and an avg QB rtg of 131.9. Lacy was running strong and they had Quarless, Cobb, Jones, Adams, and Monty available, even though Adams and Cobb played hurt.

Games 4-6 the offense averaged 22.6 pts w/127 yards rushing per gm, 240 yards passing per gm, and an avg QB rtg of 96.5. Quarless and Adams did not play in these games and Lacy stopped being Eddie. They also lost Monty in game 6.

Games 7-9 the offense averaged 18.3 pts w/69 yards rushing per gm, 260 yards passing per gm (with just 77 vs DEN), and an avg QB rtg of 83.3. they played these games without Quarless, Montgomery, and a still Fat Lacy who ended up In-Active for game #9.

At the beginning of camp WR looked to be one of the deepest spots on the roster... but now, their depth has been stressed and their offensive options are limited. For a team that throws to set up the run and buries teams early to allow the Wizard to defend from ahead, they very much need to get their passing game going. Their run production early was due to defenses defending the pass, but now they are   "daring the Packers to throw" - Aaron Rodgers.

This offense is vanilla as fu**.

From SI last week:

According to charting metrics from Pro Football Focus, the Packers had run “11” personnel—one running back, one tight end and three receivers—on 76.6% of their plays. It was a major increase in one personnel package for the Packers and a huge bump over the league average of 51.4%.

So how to beat GB is really quite simple. Jam the WR's (who play soft) on the line and punch them in the mouth. Physically rip them off their routes. Then keep Rodgers in the pocket and don't rush off the edge where he can escape and make a play on the run. Watch the pocket collapse because no WR is getting open or their just completely thrown off their route. Rodgers than falls in a heap or makes a crap pass because he has nowhere to go with the ball and refuses to even think about throwing a semi-risky pass.

Rinse.

Repeat.

It doesn't take an defensive guru to figure out how to scheme against an offense who runs the same fu**ing set over and over again.

So the answer is to play those killer TE's we have or is it 2 fullbacks?    We have no talent at the skill positions.

Expanding on the offensive woes from an earlier post of mine.

McCarthy set the plan/scheme in the spring which had an offensive set of:

QB1 – Rodgers

RB1a – Lacy, RB1b – Starks, FB1 – Kuhn

WR1 – Nelson, WR2 – Cobb, WR3 – Adams, WR4 – ?? / draftee Montgomery/Abby/Janis

TE1 – Quarless (not a top TE by any stretch, but a key to the run game and the overall plan). TE2 – RRodgers (solid #2 TE in multiple TE sets w/1 of the TEs coming out of the backfield)

They lose Nelson and the updated offensive set is:

QB1 – Rodgers

RB1a – Lacy, RB1b – Starks, FB1 – Kuhn

WR1 – Cobb, WR2 – Adams, WR3 – Jones, WR4 – Montgomery, WR5 - Abby/Janis

TE1 – Quarless, TE2 – RRodgers

The plan can continue. They can go 4-wide, 2 TE, etc... so they are not limited offensively in the scheme planned.

They have this updated offensive set for games 1-3 and the offense averages 32 pts, 127 yards rushing, 257 yards passing and a QB rtg of 131.9 per game.

3-0 start

They lose Quarless in game 3 and Adams was hurt in game 2 and plays hurt and is limited in his breaks.

In games 4-6 their offensive set is:

QB1 – Rodgers

RB1a – Lacy, RB1b – Starks, FB1 – Kuhn

WR1 – Cobb, WR2 – Jones, WR3 – Monty, WR4 – Abbrederis/Janis

TE1 – RRodgers, TE2 – Perillo

In games 4-6 the offense averaged 22.6 pts, 127 yards rushing, 240 yards passing, and a QB rtg of 96.5 per game. Significant drop in finishing drives but the D is playing well and making the difference in field position and turnover ratio.

6-0

Montgomery hurt in game 6.

In game 7 they were without Quarless and Adams was still not 100% and while Lacy was not on the injury report, he clearly was having issues with initial contact. In re-watching Lacy in games 6, 7, and 8 he just had no burst when hitting the hole.

In games 7-9 their offensive set was now:

QB1 – Rodgers

RB1a – Lacy(fat or hurt), RB1b – Starks, FB1 – Kuhn

WR1 – Cobb, WR2 – Adams(hurt or the suck is starting to show, or he clearly isn't a #2), WR3 – Jones, WR4 – Abbrederis/Janis

TE1 – RRodgers, TE2 – Perillo

The stubbornness is beginning to show as they are still trying to run the initial plan with depleted talent.

Games 7-9 the offense averaged 18.3 pts, 69 yards rushing, 260 yards passing (with just 77 vs DEN), and a QB rtg of 83.3 per game. They played these games without Quarless, Montgomery, and a still Fat Lacy who ended up in-active for game #9. Also, the D (which had been playing well) had two craptastic games in a row. vs DEN they couldn’t get a push in the middle and Manning picked them apart. Then vs CAR they played without Rollins and Shields.

6-3

Game #10… they lost Abbrederis after the Lions game.

QB1 – Rodgers

RB1a – Lacy, RB1b – Starks, FB1 – Kuhn

WR1 – Cobb, WR2 – Adams(hurt or not a #2 yet), WR3 – Jones, WR4 – Janis

TE1 – RRodgers, TE2 – Perillo

More offensive balance, but the defense won the Vikes game even though the offense scored on 7 possessions – unfortunately they did not finish drives. Finish a few of those FG drives and they score 40+. Lacy 22 for 100. A total of 34 rushing attempts (3 AR carries), and a total of 34 passing attempts. Very. Balanced. Offense.

Game #11… the stubbornness is in full force.

QB1 – Rodgers

RB1a – Lacy, RB1b – Starks, FB1 – Kuhn

WR1 – Cobb, WR2 – Adams(hurt or not a #2 yet), WR3 – Jones, WR4 – Janis

TE1 – RRodgers, TE2 – Perillo

Ran the ****ing ball with ease and yet forced the pass with a receiving crew that cannot get open consistently.

At this point of the season you can’t change the scheme, but you can optimize the scheme with the talent you have. And right now the skill position talent is not a fit for the multiple formation offense that they want to run. And, going 3WR, 1TE, 1RB they are not a match-up problem and very predictable in what they run from that formation due to the limit of talent at the TE spot. This offense needs 4WR sets where the 4th WR can’t be covered by the dime DB, or a 2TE set where the #1 TE can’t be covered by AJ Hawkish LB. When the 4th WR option is Janis they know he isn’t going to beat them with his route, the tape does not lie. With RRodgers as the #1 TE, he is not going to beat the D with a seam route requiring a S over the top which opens the coverage on the boundaries.

The stubbornness is strong in this one young padawan.
