Admittedly, some decisions will be based on rookie/2nd year player progress. But I think some of the veterans are as good as gone.
Charlie Peprah
Howard Green
Jarius Wyn
Frank Zombo
Donald Driver
I also think one of the TEs will be gone but can't choose among three prospects.

I wouldn't be surprised if AJ Hawk is cut after attempts to trade him fail. He'd count $5M dead money against the cap but that still frees up 1.5M.

Opinions?

Peprah stays and starts, for awhile.
The coaching staff likes Hawk better then most fans. Part of Hawks problem last year was the poor pass rush. The crossing patterns that caused him so many problems are slow developing plays. Teams were able to run slowly developing pattern again the Packers because the rush their pass rush was so bad. Hawk also calls the defensive plays. Hawk much to the pain of some fans stays.

Howard Green is already gone.
Wynn and Zombo are fighting for a spot on the team.
Driver stays if the packers have room.
Why do people to want Charlie Peprah gone so badly? Not at all saying he's great or that he should even start, but I feel a heck of a lot more comfortable with him as our back up than any other option.

I think So'oto and/or Brad Jones will be gone. So'oto has great size and plays his butt off but he's limited athletically and didn't prove himself as a stud on STs. Jones is injury prone and we simply have better options available. One or both get caught in the numbers. Same for Francois. I think Terrell Manning will push him.

I think CJ Wilson is as good as gone. He provides almost nothing against the pass. Wynn showed enough I think, but I could see a competition between him and Neal for that last spot.
Zombo isn't great but, if he's healthy, he's better than Jones or Walden. I think he stays. Same with Peprah, who makes a good backup.

Many of the cuts will depend on 2nd year progress (So'Oto being one obvious example).

I'd like to see Hawk gone, but that would hurt the Packers cap if they let him go this year, and there's no way any team is going to trade for him with that salary.

Let's just say I disagree

Want him and want him at that price tag are two different things. He isn't trade-able IMO, but wouldn't last a minute on the waiver wire. Well, I think he would go straight to FA because of time in the league, but you get the point.

I think he keeps his starting job this season and is cut next.. Just so much money to give away for a player who is capable.
I've always liked Hawk's professionalism and effort. I just think the 3-4 depends on breeding uncertainty in the center's/QB's mind as to who is bringing it on any play. With the increased passing emphasis, the only certified rushing scenario is 3rd and a yard. Hawk just doesn't have the acceleration to rush the passer (his flippin the bird success last year not withstanding)

However, I went back and found an error in my calculation of his salary impact: He would count roughly the same against the cap this year regardless so I now can't see him being cut.

I feel most certain of Peprah's future: missed assignments, bad angles, indifferent tackling can all be replaced by a rookie with superior speed.

And Howard Green. I'm sure he won't be back. Roll Eyes
Green / Muir / Wynn may get a September reprieve until Hargrove and Neal complete their suspensions

Last year GB lost:

F.Colledge
B.Swain
B.Jackson
C.Jenkins
J.Spitz
B.Underwood
J.Gordy
C.West
S.Havner
D.Briggs
N.McDonald
M.Wilhelm
Q.Johnson
A.Smith
D.Nance
A.Bigby

Same as the year before, roster turns over about 15/53 guys each year as the Packers churn the roster
It's not that I think Hawk is bad - I still think he's most naturally suited to play middle linebacker in a 4-3. Its just that I think his presence means DJ Smith won't get a real chance to start, and I think Smith could be very good. In addition to Hawk's lack of coverage skills, he's also pretty slow and the defense needs to get faster this year. Plus his contract is crazy.

I think lots of teams would be interested in him , but not at his current salary.
Hawk is a player that I guess people either love or hate--not much in between.
JMHO, Hawk pretty much defines the word "solid". He's plenty tough, reliable, and smart.
But he does have his deficiencies, the biggest of which is lack of speed, and it tends to kill him in pass coverage.
In the end, though, Hawk won't go anywhere. It's more likely than not he will finish out his contract with the Packers. Also, boxed', I don't know that Hawk will deter Smith's development. The general trend among the LB's has been the guy who is playing well gets his chance to play. And Hawk has had his role reduced before when the coaches thought it was needed or necessary, so I would expect the same would happen under similar circumstances.
In the end, if Smith is ready for increased playing time, he'll find his way to the field.
Don't think the problem is Hawk's speed as much as it is his complete lack of instincts. He's a "solid" player, but guys like him are found in the middle rounds all the time.

There's no cap relief to be had by cutting him and he's here for a least another year. I do think Smith could very well be an upgrade just based on what I've seen from him to date.
I think if Thompson and McCarthy are uncomfortable with Hawk's salary vs. production then I think they will make a move. If they don't make a move then I think it should kill the argument that Hawk is under-performing and we should go with DJ Smith. They won't field the 25 highest paid players, they will field the 25 best players. If DJ Smith is really as good as many think, then they will move Hawk and go with Smith, but if they stick with Hawk then I see no reason to think the Packers are getting robbed and that Smith is a better option.

Hawk should have been benched in favor of Bishop long ago and he wasn't. If not for Nick Barnett's injuries, Bishop would still be on the bench, or on another team.
Win and play at least normal Defense and we'll be fine, the individual player arguments are pointless IMO.
Holy Schnikies, if we just climb halfway up the mountain on defense I'm thinkin we will take the division.

We have a good organization right now in Green Bay, with every thing else in chaos around the globe, I hug this like a little comfort blanket.

thank you football gods.
Pfft. Every time he gets blocked, which every DL who has ever played the game in the NFL has had happen to him, the wailing and gnashing of teeth will commence. Clearly, the only reason he would ever be blocked is because he took that play off and because he's a lazy turd and a bust.

Even if he gets 12 sacks, that'll be because he only tried on those 12 plays.

Hawk and Bishop don't play the same position. If they did, they wouldn't be on the field at the same time.

I'm so dum.

wouldn't be so sure of that. suspended guys don't count against the active roster, right?

At the same position? Throw in an injury or two and you would have real problems just having enough guys to cover the effort the game would require. I could see 2 suspended players at different positions.
