TV and film actor who became a notable diabetes spokesman dies at 85

Among his movie roles, he's probably best remembered for Cocoon, which he made when he was only 49/50, working with much older actors.  But he also had a lot of interesting smaller roles; I like his part at the end of Absence of Malice.

And then there are the Quaker Oats commercials:

Turns out ol’ Wilford lived 3 miles from me here in Southern Utah...I should have looked for him in the Quaker Oats aisle of the local grocer.

Back in my days as an entertainment journalist I interviewed him when he was out promoting Cocoon 2, and he remember being in Bakersfield for rodeos and asked me about different people he knew there. With this guy, what you see is what you get and he was a genius at projecting his genuine nature. I had the impression if you were in business with him a handshake deal was ironclad.
