Free agent defensive back Charles Woodson says NFL teams think he’s too old, and that’s why he remains unemployed six weeks after the Packers cut him.

“I’m 36, so of course I’m considered ancient in the game right now, and teams are looking for younger players and trying to make their rosters younger,” Woodson said on NFL AM. “If you’re an older guy they kind of push you to the side, and they’ll maybe look at you much later on down the road, when I guess they figure they can get you much cheaper.”

Woodson says his camp has put out word that he’s interested in finding a new team, but so far that interest hasn’t been reciprocated.

“Nothing right now, nothing substantial. I’m just waiting around. We put feelers out, just to see where everybody’s at, but there’s not much right now,” Woodson said.

Dude's had a terrific career. 99.9% of NFL players would kill for that career. Regarding GB, I don't even think it's money that's the issue. It's he's taking a roster spot that a Richardson, Hayward, House etc that isn't gaining valuable experience. Would Casey have had the season he did if Woody doesn't break his collarbone? No practice no matter how "close" it is to game experience matches actually going out and playing.

Still players will get hurt in 2013. And that's likely when Woody will get his call.

Money was not the issue in GB, they simply didn't have a spot for him going forward

Very few NFL stars get to leave the game on their terms, and it has to be the most agonizing transition they'll ever face. "When the cheering stops"

Reminds of the movie " Goodfellas" when Henry Hill has to become just another schmoe as part of his witness protection plan - He totally struggles with not being Somebody and not having the life he used to have. Money, bling, chicks and respect all gone in the blink of an eye

Why would a team pay Ed Reed, and Charles Woodson is still out there? Woodson was better in 2012. At least he will tackle.

Prisco has a point.

Don't know about Reed, but Woody can't cover anymore. That's a problem for a defensive back.

The other day I ordered spaghetti with marinara sauce and got egg noodles with ketchup, I'm an average nobody.

Amen brotha.

Last year JSO had an update on Craig Newsome. Heartbreaking. Though better now, he's got a pain pump implanted in him because he's been in non-stop pain since retiring. Have a lot of respect for Wood, but no..I ain't shedding no tears for his situation. Man is healthy and able to do what he wants and he's got millions.

Plus his wine is fairly decent.
I think having broken collarbones in February 2011 and October 2012 is a major factor. He's clearly lost about two steps and can't play CB anymore, but even if you play him at safety, you run the likelihood that he'll play for about 5-6 games and then get hurt. Especially if he's asked to play a prominent role in run support and having to take on FBs or TEs 10-15 times a game.

SIX BOTTLE OPTIONS

SIX - RED
Six bottles of our signature TwentyFour by Charles Woodson Cabernet Sauvignon will be allocated for you at the bottling of each new vintage and will be shipped to your home or office upon the wine’s release. $865

TWENTYFOUR BOTTLE OPTIONS

TWENTYFOUR - RED
Twenty-four bottles of our signature TwentyFour by Charles Woodson Cabernet Sauvignon will be allocated for you at the bottling of each new vintage and will be shipped to your home or office upon the wine’s release. $2980

2 cases of wine for $3,000?!? It ain't THAT good, I assure you, & I'll get you a $35 bottle that'll make that stuff taste like Yellowtail.

And yes I know some of the money goes to charity but that's way over-priced & I simply hate that.
Strictly from a playing standpoint, I guarantee Woodson is better than some of the guys that will end up making teams this year. The problem is, he's going to be more expensive than some of those FA rookies will be and just by being a veteran, he's automatically going to have to be paid more than a cheaper rookie which will make teams shy away.

Without the salary cap, there would be a spot for him somewhere based on sheer playing ability. Unfortunately, the cap is very unkind to declining veterans. Hard to believe just how good he was even just 2 years ago. In 2011, he still had some game left, but you could see him doing a lot more clutching and grabbing than he used to.
National Champion. Heisman Trophy. Played in two Super Bowls. Won a ring. Defensive player of the year. All Pro. There's nothing left to accomplish.

After being one of the best guy's on the field for the majority of your first 36 years it has to be crushing to hear "he's done". That has to be tougher to deal with than the prospect of not playing.

Hope he calls it a career. Leaving the game with that kind of hardware and your health at 36 is a blessing. HOF is next.

I was at a charity event in Milwaukee where I sampled it. And ya it was good. But NO not a 150.00 a bottle good.

The autographed bottle is a cute touch but Im not dropping that kind of coin on that either. I'd sooner get his signature on something football related (e.g. a jersey).

Have a lot of buddies in the restaurant and wine biz including those who are sommelier's. Several have told me 50.00 bucks is the top you should ever pay for a bottle. Beyond that most wine "experts" can't tell the difference between that and a 400.00 bottle.
Vets get a special deal and don't count as much on the salary cap, if they are making near the minimum. But CW wouldn't play for vet minimum, nor should he. If a vet wants to hang around another year, the cap lets them, but not at a big salary. $2 million for a player with no upside or future is a lot. At this point Woodson is not too much better than Bush as a db and much less valuable as a special teamer.

Your use of the phrase "back door" makes me think you and Cavetoad aren't talking about the same thing when he suggests he wants a pain pump
I'm not going to tolerate this. I'm going to go to bed and get some sleep, and try to think of something really funny to say when I get up tomorrow.

You guys both wait right here. I'm not done with you yet by any means.
He's still got a decent chance IMO to be signed at some point. All it takes is about 2 injuries to any teams starting DB's and suddenly he'd be in demand. Same holds true even if it's 1 injury if that happened to be that teams only decent safety. And there are plenty of teams with some pretty crap DB fields.

PFT had a blurb that the 9ers havent closed the door on signing him yet.
Cullen Jenkins didn't sign until July I think two years ago. Heck, Bert Farve didn't sign with Minnesota until after the hard part of training camp was over. There's plenty of time for Wood to catch on somewhere. I think some teams wait until they see how the draft turns out for them before they sign free agents.

I thought the same thing. CW, has leadership qualities and would probably be a very good coach. This is a way for Woodson to stay involved in the game.

That said, I don't think CW wants that big of a pay cut, and might not want the huge workload that comes with coaching.
