Niet, not stupid. They need a derivative of the play that does not involve substituting #12 or getting him hit.

Yeah, stupid. Like when some guy here suggested moving Clay Matthews to ILB. Guy got roasted by the superior football minds(other than Dom Capers).

IIRC, That's bull****. There was a lot of back and forth about it but nothing I would call getting roasted.

The original suggestion came a year previous when Matthews was the only real passing rushing threat.  So yes, he was appropriately roasted.  It should be noted that Matthews rolled up most of his sacks while playing outside but did a fantastic job of defensing the pass game in the middle.  If you don't have Peppers, Perry, Neal and even Mulumba, you don't make that move.

BTW, I think Gopher got a lot of sympathy poonanny.

If I recall also the suggestion was made before Peppers was here and Matthews was the premier pass rush. I think people blasted the idea because it was a bad idea to move your only real threat in to the middle...I would blast that idea again if the circumstances were the same. Fortunately they're not the same which is why I believe Capers AND McCarthy made the move. If we don't have Peppers, Matthews doesn't move to the middle. More than likely they stick it out with Barrington and Hawk.

Most of the time all I hear is Jim Nabors in his Gomer Pyle voice.  Well Goolllllllly.

Once in a while his cousin Crazy Cooter but only when a select few post; you know who you are.

I do miss our yahting member in his Thurston Howell voice.  I wonder how old the twins are?

Green Bay — The Green Bay Packers added another offensive tackle to its 90-man roster Tuesday in rookie Vince Kowalski. The 6-foot-4, 305-pounder started all four seasons at Villanova, a total of 48 games.

Last season, Kowalski was named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association first team as his team finished the regular season 10-2 and made the postseason in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision level.

Kowalski, who will wear No. 50 for the Packers, was also named to the all-conference third team as a sophomore in 2012.

The Packers now have six tackles on their roster in starters David Bakhtiari and Bryan BulagaDon BarclayJeremy VujnovichFabbians Ebbele and Kowalski.

Any OT wearing 50 embodies camp body. Brings the roster to the pre-camp limit of 90.

Guess they wanted Ripkowski to have company. And/or ensure the "retire AJ Hawk's number" boomlet settles down.

MM speaking to the press now. Will post his comments presently.

This one deserves a post of its own.

@ByRyanWood: MM on retaining drafted players: "I think our players like playing in Green Bay, for a lot of reasons. No. 1, it's the Green Bay Packers."

From JSO:

Green Bay --- Running updates from Mike McCarthy's Wednesday news conference...

On the next step for Tolzien... I think he's definitely done that. He had three outstanding throws in the 2-minute. He's taking that step in the OTA practice environment, He'll continue to work like he always has. At the end, the preseason games, that's when you want to see a quarterback take a jump.

On seeing what he wants in OTA... Our OTA's are going well. The flow has been excellent. We haven't taken a step backward. You have to learn how to practice --- you're doing new things. Some periods change; you never stay the same. I thought in the first week, we got off to a really good start. Two more this week and then minicamp next week. To this point, I feel really good about the work and the quality of work. Will take next Friday to review and make sure our young players are ready to go for training camp.

On Brett Hundley... He's doing well. The last two days, he's taken a step. Missed some time out in L.A. He's soaking everything in he can. Working with Aaron and Scott's been a big help. I think he's off to a good start.

On team not adding any free agents... Part of it is philosophy, part opportunity, part evaluation. This is the path that we use and stay on. Gives you confidence. We feel good about the 90 guys we have here but continue to evaluate on the 90-man roster.

On retaining his own veterans (like Cobb, Bulaga)... Our players like playing in Green Bay for a number of different reasons. No. 1, it's the Packers. Tradition. Resources. They see the opportunity to improve every single day. At the end of the day, they want to win a championship. Number of factors.

On Jeff Janis.... Jeff is developing. He's getting a lot of opportunities. He's done some good things on special teams. Some things specific to his skill level, he's good at. Some things he needs to improve on. He's catching the ball better. He can get better fundamentally. Jeff is really improving; gotten a lot of quality work.

On Nelson's recovery ... Jordy's going to be fine. The work he's putting into rehab, this is all part of the training on how we're handling it.

On the O-Line... I think the offensive line is going to be better. That's why you practice. The continuity those guys have in the room, we're having a heck of an off-season in the O-Line room.

On starting fast this year... It's an emphasis. This will be an emphasis. The adjustments will be minor and more to the effect of the approach. It's June. What's going to happen between now and that first game, I have a good idea how we'll approach that.

On Year 1 to Year 2 jump... You think about these young men out of college, go through training, the whole process, workouts and the ultimately the draft, minicamp and thrown into May/June environment. There's a lot of learning. From their senior year through their first year is an overload of experience. Once you can step away from it and learn everything from A, B, C... Year 1, they're trying to keep their head above water. Year 2, they're learning what they're doing and what the guy across from them is doing and that's when players improve.

Pepper's moving to a new position.

http://www.packersnews.com/sto...s-new-role/71037044/

Gotcha?

The team announced Wednesday that head athletic trainer Pepper Burruss is moving into the newly created role of the director of sports medicine administration with his long-time assistant Bryan Engel being promoted to head athletic trainer.

Burruss is entering his 39th season in the NFL and has spent the past 22 as the head athletic trainer for Green Bay. The Wappingers Falls, N.Y., native joined the Packers in 1993 following 16 seasons with the New York Jets as an assistant athletic trainer.

"Pepper has been a vital member of this organization since 1993 and we will continue to rely on his expertise and wisdom in his new role," Packers general manager Ted Thompson said in a statement.

Engel originally joined Green Bay in 1997 as a seasonal assistant and has served as an assistant athletic trainer for the Packers since 1999. He was honored with the 2013 Tim Davey NFC Assistant Athletic Trainer Award.

Prior to joining Green Bay, Engel was a seasonal assistant with the New England Patriots in 1996-97 after serving as a training camp intern in 1995.

"We are excited about Bryan's opportunity as he has been a great asset to the organization," Thompson said. "He has worked diligently over the years and grown into his new responsibility, in which he will oversee the Packers training staff."

I realize how deep that WR corp is, but James Jones is still available. He'd come cheap. Knows the offense and even in OAK with a lousy offense around him he remained clutch in the EZ. Nope I don't in any, way, shape or form expect it.

Mini-camp begins today. Another open session.

@JeffAshPG: Looks like great day to watch #Packers minicamp practice. Sunny, 72, light NNE winds. 10:30 am, Clarke Hinkle Field.

Demovsky preview, here.

http://espn.go.com/blog/green-...-of-otas-for-packers

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The NFL calendar turns from OTAs to minicamp this week for the Green Bay Packers.

You won't notice much of a difference.

Minicamp is mandatory but attendance at the voluntary OTAs has been near perfect, so it's not like there will be many new arrivals. In fact, the only player that hasn't been seen or heard from yet is rookie third-round pick Ty Montgomery, who couldn't participate in OTAs because his alma mater, Stanford, was still in session. Montgomery will attend minicamp.

Practice will look similar, too, with players in helmets and shorts but no pads.

Things will be slightly different behind closed doors.

"What we do in the meetings and the number of things we'll emphasize [during minicamp] will definitely change," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said last week as OTAs wrapped up. "But as far as the competition on the field, it will be highlighted towards situations, more move-the-ball type periods where we're trying to hit all the situations we possibly can and keep giving our younger players knowledge to get into a flow of how it's all going to come together. So the schedule will change in the morning some. But yes, it will definitely be kind of a review of the OTAs."

McCarthy currently has three practices scheduled for this week -- one each on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Practices on Tuesday and Thursday both are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. local time and are open to fans, weather permitting.

However, Wednesday's session is closed to the public, which could be an indication that McCarthy has a non-football activity planned for that day. Typically during minicamp, he uses one day for a team-building event.

After Thursday, the players are off until they report for training camp on July 29, so this week marks the end of the offseason program that began April 20.

Some odds and ends from mini-camp today.

@RobDemovsky: All 89 players on the #Packers roster present. Those not practicing:
Javess Blue
Casey Hayward
Nick Perry
Justin Perillo
Josh Boyd
Mike Neal

@RobDemovsky: Ty Montgomery has joined the group of punt returners, including Cobb, Abbrederis, Hyde. #Packers

@RobDemovsky: Brief punting period. Tim Masthay puts two inside the 20 (fair catches at the 10). Cody Mandell with one touchback and one at the 15.

@ByRyanWood: #Packers K Mason Crosby goes 8-for-8 on field goals. Makes from 33, 36, 40, 43, 45, 46, 48 and 50 yards. Not bad for June.

@ByRyanWood: Sam Shields back getting team reps today. With Casey Hayward out, Damarious Randall starts out at other perimeter CB.

@ByRyanWood: Looks like Quinten Rollins and Damarious Randall getting equal reps opposite Sam Shields at perimeter CB. Demetri Goodson in the mix, too.

@ByRyanWood: UDFA RB John Crockett has an ice pack wrapped around his left ankle, limping badly. Looks like his practice is finished.

@RobDemovsky: It probably won't matter but Matt Blanchard is so far ahead of Brett Hundley at this point.

@TyDunne: Rodgers looking to Montgomery a lot today, trying to get the rookie a lot of action before everyone breaks for the summer.

@PeteDougherty: Like last week, Jordy Nelson does individual drills but no team.

Now that Jordy has been paid he no longer has to work?

BTW, I can't remember the last time I saw a post like this on X4. That Ron(Rong) dude complaining about MM cutting practice short, Maybe?

MM comments after practice, from JSO (with insert * from Acme Packing Company blog):

Green Bay --- Running highlights from Mike McCarthy's Tuesday news conference...

On minicamp... Today's practice was all review, install one through eight. Offensively, very productive today. Defense had a lot thrown at them today. Practice was good. We got exactly what we had hoped to get out of it.

On Montgomery... Ty looked excellent. Good practice Friday and another good one today. Does things very naturally. Picks it up very quick.

On McCarthy's offensive background helping in defensive room... Coaches spending more time together. Had a contest where coaches were given a topic, 15 minutes to present it, given a reward. Had first place, second place, third place, fourth place. We're trying to educate as much as we can. Something we all realize. Players grow as we're here. We're always trying to increase learning opportunity. Stimulates coversation. Very healthy.

* ... (It has been a) big focus for our whole team this year is to raise our football IQ. Coaches spend more time together, offense and defense ... we're trying to educate as much as we can defensively how the offense thinks, (for the) offense how the defense thinks ...

Which of the coaches presented today to the team? "(Defensive line coach) Mike Trgovac and (Offensive line coach) James Campen did theirs today and they did it to the theme of 'Step Brothers.' You figure that out. They took a concept they had to teach, they used some video, you can tell that's a movie the offensive line knew every word of...good teaching...for the coaches to be able to present in front of the whole team, defensive guys have never seen James Campen teach offensive line technique" ... *

On McCarthy working with Capers... Time is more balanced. I'm very impressed with our defensive staff. Continuity of being in the room together for a long time. In my position, toughest part of job is managing staff. Didn't realize that until I became a head coach.

On who won the coaching competition... Can't say that. One and two are up on Thursday.

On the change... This has been the busiest off-season for me since the first year.

On Wednesday... We have a team activity tomorrow. ... The opportunity our players have tomorrow, will be in groups of four and five. Be in conversations with people they haven't. About culture. Bonding with teammates and coaches.

On Richard Rodgers... He has a hell of a home run swing. He's more comfortable. The first year, they're learning, just getting ready for the game. Now, a chance to go back with more video, can focus more on technique, fundamentals and what the defense is doing.

On Adams' jump... I would say Davante Adams, if you wanted a clear illustration of a player taking a jump in his second year, you just saw it. He's been tremendous in OTA's and he has more in front of him. He's done a great job in strength and conditioning. If you picked a MVP or an All-Star, he'd be at the top of the list.

On Blanchard today... Matt Blanchard had a heck of a day today. I told him in April, "Why in the hell do you not have a job?" There's a lot to work with as far as his physical talent. He's a winner. He's in a good place. He's getting better every week.

On Montgomery in ST... Hope so. He'll have opportunities on special teams. Hope he makes an impact.

On Hayward doing some work today.... Casey's getting better. He's following the protocol the staff has for him. Important for him and Jordy to get some work here down the stretch, going into summer workouts.

Explains why he has been limited in sessions so far.

@RobDemovsky: #Packers OLB Nick Perry said he had shoulder surgery almost immediately after the season. Said it bothered him most of last year.

@TyDunne: Nick Perry said he had shoulder surgery after the season. Bothered him most of 2014. Said it was frustrating, but wanted to play thru it.

Mike McCarthy took the Packers out clay shooting today - not the linebacker - target practice in Little Suamico, Wisconsin. This is actually the third time McCarthy has taken the boys to Little Creek Lodge during the three day mandatory mini camp - MIKE CLEMENS

Last mini-camp practice today and the last until beginning of TC.

@PeteDougherty: Mccarthy appears to have let 7-plus vets go home early, not at final minicamp practice today. That includes A Rodgers, Kuhn, Sitton, Lang.

@PeteDougherty: Also Matthews, Nelson, Peppers, Raji, Guion.

@ByRyanWood: After leaving Tuesday's practice with ice wrapped around his left ankle, #Packers RB John Crockett wearing some variation of a walking boot.

@ByRyanWood: There's a reason we can't find No. 31 today. #Packers release CB Travis Manning, sign TE Harold Spears.

@TyDunne: The 6-4, 248-pound Spears played in 45 games at New Hampshire with 111 receptions for 1,639 yards (14.8 avg.) and 12 touchdowns.

I guess the pick parade has started in GB. Banjo, Hyde, Fanor (on a tip by Vaughters), Goodson and Gunter all with INTs on Tolzien, Hundley and Blanchard.

Man, I can't wait to see how many INTs our defense is going to total this season. Teams will be throwing often because we will pummel them early. Throwing will be their only hope, and we will just keep lighting them up with all those ball hawks.

Pick parade.

MM comments after practice today, per JSO:

Mike McCarthy's Thursday news conference...

On targets hit this spring... Any time you put together a schedule, look at the workload. Exceeded our workload. Felt really good about the installation phase and going back to review it. Definitely hit the target there. Second target you look for, is getting team together, a lot of new drills -- especially on special teams. Each position coach trying to highlight their drills, fundamentals. The competitive period, there was excellent work. Today, the defense had a lot of good moments. Three turnovers in the red zone. Feel really good about the start of the 2015 season.

On giving veterans the day off... The veterans were here for the meetings and strength and conditioning. Two-fold. I felt like we got the work out of that group that we needed. Wanted to give the young guys more reps.

On young players who have stood out... Hubbard has had a heck of a spring. Micah, heck, Micah's old. Three years in. Second-year players, for the most part, in the limited environment have taken a step.

On message to team... We've known since the schedule came out that players would be off five weeks. Part of the way we train. Things we do prior to that are factored in. Continue to educate the ones who haven't gone through it. Guys come back earlier than they have in the past.

On if some guys stay in Green Bay... Some will stay here. The norm is everyone likes to get away, travel, go home. For the most part, people get away and after the Fourth of July people are to filter back in. By 10 days before camp, everyone's typically back.

On long break/staying out of trouble... Had NFL Security meeting. That's a great lead-in in to the vacation. Don't give one talk and things just fall together. A lot of individual relationships. Have to be safe, smart, enjoy time with family and be ready for great opportunity this season.

On redshirt guys.. Carl did some good things. Came into camp in better shape than when he left. He needs to continue to grow. I though Khyri started slow and picked it up as of late. On the line, there's only so much you can do this in this environment. Demetri's interception in the 2-minute drill is what you're looking for.

On Favre returning... It's going to be a great event. It's something we're all looking forward to. Giving him the praise... one thing you always appreciate about Brett is the way he attacked the position. He beat to a different drum. Was with him in 1999. The ability to play in every single game as a Packer, that statement itself is remarkable. This will be a great weekend.

On team-building activities/what other coaches think... I don't think a football team gets better playing ping pong, I'll agree with that. Everybody goes about building their program and culture doing different things. We're in Year 10. We'll do things that work and things we won't do again.

On Ladarius Gunter... Way too early for this. In our helmets and shorts. He's done some really good things. Shows he belongs. I like his physical nature. Stood out on special teams. Aggressive to jump in there; like that as a coach.

On next 6 weeks for him... Personally, it'll be family time. I'll be here in Wisconsin. Trip to Pittsburgh. This is the best time of year here so I don't want to leave. Kids involved in a lot of activities. Been a busy off-season. Looking forward to time with the family.

This quote from MM was a little damning. Poor Micah Hyde. What an offseason.

On young players who have stood out... Hubbard has had a heck of a spring. Micah, heck, Micah's old toast. Three years in.
