I hate that reasoning. Seems to me he could of fell in someone's lap 23 different times before TT was smart enough to draft him. But wait, TT was also smart enough to hire a head coach who develops QB's. He chose MM over Peyton. Peyton has won a SB but would he have developed AR like MM has? For that matter would any of the 23 passes done as much with AR as MM? Same with Favre. Would he have been this good without MH? I doubt it. We need to appreciate TT more than we do. So much bitching about the Brian Brohm and Harrel picks with little appreciation for his whole body of work.

You will never hear me say that Rodgers fell into TT's lap...for one simple reason....I would not have taken him there...I still remember being upset with the pick and wanting immediate help to make a push at the SB for Favre's last year(s)...boy was I wrong. And I don't think I was the only one who thought that way.

Perhaps not. I think that the player Ted picked that year actually does have a very good chance of leading us to a Super Bowl in Brett's last season!
A friend had asked me to check out the Vikings draft party with him and it was a day of confusion for him. He was all hot & sweaty for Mike Williams who I needled him about Vincent Jackson being much better and when Rodgers was still there at #20 I was really excited because I thought he would go #1 to San Fran. More tha a few people asked me why I was so excited for a QB and I thought Favre would only play 2-3 more year and I didn't want to become like the Bears.
I remember the raiders traded up 1 spot in front of the pack. I thought for sure they were going to take Rodgers. Instead they took fabian Washington. Tt was rumored to be in love with fabian. I believe that rumor was a complete Smokescreen. TT said when Rodgers was there at #24 he began making a few phone calls asking scouts and other gms if there was something wrong with Rodgers? Every answer tt received was the same. There's nothing wrong with him.

I believe teams at that time were gun shy about Rodgers. If you remember Rodgers was there live at the draft. Teams didn't want to chance the investment in Rodgers.

Mayock correctly predicted the free fall of Rodgers to #24 on Nfl network. I was completely stunned when it actually happened. I couldn't be happier.
FAvre used to just wow me during a game but you always had the feelign he might do something stupid to cost the team. Rodgers is just a pleasure to watch. I have seen fans of other team critical of him becase he has not won a playoff game. By the time he has done, Rodgers will have won plenty of playoff games. He is smart, throws a great ball, (does not try to throw a howitzer five yard pass) can run the ball when hte play breaks down and knows exactly what to do with it.

He has Bart Starrs brain, Montanas accuracy, Tarkentons feet, and with all that a geniunely humble guy. There is no other QB I would want leading the Packers, incluing Manning, Brees, Rivers, or Brady. If he stays healthy the next ten yeas are going to be fun....

Same here. Once Rodgers fell to us, you knew it was almost a given that TT would take him. At the time, Favre looked like his days/years were numbered, and we needed an heir apparent. It was a perfect fit.

I will openly admit that we are very fortunate that Rodgers fell as far as he did. I didn't see a mock that year that had Rodgers falling to us. Heck, I remember that the Packer Plus draft special that year had Rodgers on the cover...because they thought he might go #1 overall.

TT deserves credit for having the stones to take him, knowing that it would not be popular with Favre or a portion of the fan base.

Agreed. I wouldn't trade him for any other QB in the game. He is going to be a super star for 10+ years. And I firmly believe that he will win a Super Bowl...I want to say multiple SBs, but I realize how difficult that is to do.
BTW, McCarthy deserves a lot of credit for coaching him up and developing him. When we hired McCarthy, he was touted as a QB guru. Well, he has lived up to that billing. Rodgers has become one of the top QBs in the league, and now we read that Flynn is considered one of the top backup QBs in the league. McCarthy deserves a lot of credit for our QB situation, along with (of course) TT for drafting both guys.
I remember being very pumped he was still sitting there. At the time, I believed Favre had two more years and it would be the perfect situation for him to sit and learn a couple of years and then take over. I guess that basically happened.

I am also wondering what the definition of "falling into a lap" is and why it is a bad thing? If a guy is projected to go earlier than he is actually taken, it seems like the team that gets him could say he "fell into our laps." I would also suspect that teams would he overjoyed if every pick of a draft "fell into their laps" because then that would mean they got players at a spot where they projected them higher. I remember hearing on talk radio up here that APeterson fell into the Vikings lap at #7 when the Cards took that tackle a couple of picks before him. No one seemed to mind that he "fell into their laps."

OOPS! Seems someone caught a case of farvewaffleitis from his hero. Here is just a small sampling...

One winning season in five years. People can try to sugar coat it, but it's a fact. One winning season in five years. And you can't just put it on MM, when TT is the one that hired him.

TT and MM need to go.

I wanted Matt Roth that year. [/hangs head in shame]

Precious.
I recall lots of talk of a Tedford system QB with possible attitude issues and not much affection for the pick. I didn't see it as a priority need and whenever a guy talked about as a possible first overall pick falls like that it does raise questions.

That said, I always operate from the assumption that TT knows a lot more about the players and the game than I do and that certainly was the case with AR.
That was Ted's first ever pick as GM. All I thought when he made the choice was how (a) it took balls of granite to pull the trigger on that choice as the retirement BS from you-know-who swirled in the air and (b) a new regime was definitely taking over, as the 'we're one player away' crappola that screwed up the roster was thereby over.

Interesting that his second ever pick was Nick Collins. That draft as a whole was panned for a couple of years, but AR and Collins alone make it a good one with two Pro Bowlers and a fringe guy like Poppinga in the later rounds was fine. That makes up for the Kraig Braggs and the Mike Hawkins slop that came later.
At the time I was also one of those that wanted TT to draft somebody that could give us some immediate help to get us to a SB. I sorta recall I was hoping for someone good on the D side.

When Rodgers fell and TT took him I had mixed reactions if I remember correctly. Certainly hoped for the best on that one. But I remember many wanted anybody to help Bert get us another SB win before he retired. Bert love was still in full bloom back then.

The Tedford QB syndrome, IMHO, is what allowed Rodgers to fall. And, correct me if I'm wrong, Rodgers is the first, perhaps only, Tedford QB to prosper.

Like Karma, for Packer fans that was one heck-of-a pick TT made.
Mixed reactions. TT deserves credit. MM is a terrific QB coach. And part of the reason AR fell was because there was some concern about where he held the ball (too high, as per the Tedford system, many said). Some wondered if he could change that (he has) and how it would affect his motion (it didn't). If you remember, in college AR held the ball way up near his ear on his dropback, which could limit some motion in the arm as well as how well the QB can swivel his head to the opposite side of the field. I think more credit should go to TT for recognizing AR's "tallant" and probably to MM who more than likely influenced TT. I can imagine MM in the draft room telling TT, "I can fix this guy and make him a stud QB! Take him! And I'd get rid of this PITA brINT!"
People can change their mind. However I agree it would be nice to hear their former thoughts too.

MM was the OC for the niners. Mm is on record as stating he felt Alex smith was the better of the 2 qb's at that time!

It's good though. I think it helped Rodgers be alittle more humble. Aaron realizes that you must work for everything. Maybe the drop to #24 helped him grow as a man.
I think in the Colts game I heard one of the announcers say AR had a chip on his shoulder.

Sitting in the Green Room for hours draft night and suffering for years with lord favrt and his ball washers will do that.

Reminds me of our SB year when we had had enough of the cowpokes and 49ers winning crucial games and all our players had a chip on their shoulders coming into that season.

Nothing like being young, hungry, "tallanted", and motivated to turn this season into another season of destiny.
