On defense, if I had to chose who stepped up the most in each group :

Pennel looked really good. He was active and made several plays.

Jake Ryan surprised, but I really liked Elliot. He can fly around with his speed and does a nice job with his hands, valuable player to have.

Gunter/Rollins, take your pick. Enough said on these two, hopefully they can keep it going.

Haha that's awesome Packdog. I have never heard anyone say that before. With the depth on this team, the guys that don't make the Packers roster would field a fairly competitive team.

Cavetoad, I forget my manners too often. Thanks for the links!
Last year, Charter was promoting free NFLN access to some presason games fairly heavily, but this year....nothing. I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy a HQ stream, albeit with homer announcers.

To me, it seems this game had a regular season 'feel' to it. Overall, a fairly solid game, but still plenty of pad level/execution/bubble to clean up.

Gunter is a player. Talk about finding a gem in the UDFA fields! Lots of technique to learn and apply to be sure, but he's got a nose for football. And apparently has no fear, and shows up for every play.  Monty and Rollins seem to be the same. To my eye, these guys look like they worry much more about learning and executing than they would ever about being flashy and/or loud. Always refreshing to see.

As an aside, we throw lots of kudos to our WR scouts, and whoever is doing the same for our DBs deserves the same. Pretty impressive to hit on 2 UFDAs in a relatively short periods of time, not to mention the guys you're spending draft picks on!

It also looks like our 2nd year guys have improved from last year; again, excellent to see. This , with my comments above, reinforces what Packdog alluded to, as well as the concept of D & D.

It looks like were a little beat up already. Lots of guys on the injury report. I noticed Neal was out with an abdomen. If memory serves, that was the same/similar injury he had as a rookie (some type of hernia?). Hope that's not a reoccurring issue.

I think Perillo got a concussion last night, and that's a bit concerning. I hope we can get some guys back in the next couple of weeks and get  'em in the groove before the real season commences.

All I know is if Jake Ryan can keep bringing it like he did Thursday night, we will be much improved. That, added to a deeper, more talented, faster group of ball hawks throughout our secondary, and a little improvement in pass rush, and we will be a better team than the one that took the field in 2014.

Ryan impressed the bejesus out of me. I wasn't surprised at all by Rollins or Gunter, because they've been showing that kind of ability since they were brought in. But, Ryan. Holy crap! Nice to see.

Gotta say, Palmer is really hindered with the club on his hand. Super unfortunate for him to suffer that injury now. He was competing very well, and looking better than I ever could have imagined early on.

Surprise absence from anything related to the game was Tavarus Dantzler. I don't recall seeing him at all. He's a player I felt would be a factor in the ILB mix. Anyone see #57?

Speaking of depth, secondary roster is shaping up like so :

CB:
1. Shields
2. Hayward
3. Randall
4. Rollins
5. Gunter

S:
1. Burnett
2. Clinton-Dix
3. Richardson
4. Hyde (FS/CB)

Pack typically keeps 10 in secondary, so probably 1 spot left to fight for between Banjo, Glover-Wright, Sebetic, Goodson, and Fanor(sp?) Will Ted go with the known entity like Banjo, or think upside ?

A good dab of coal tar should eliminate Sebetic.

Won't be surprised to see Fanor beat out a guy like Banjo. Banjo plays 110% and is a good ST player, but I think Fanor is the guy with more upside as a defender. He fits the body type they seem to be looking for in a Safety...taller, leaner.

Sebetic isn't a factor IMO. He's fast and quick, but he doesn't seem to have the instincts.

To me it's Banjo vs. Fanor and Goodson vs. Glover-Wright for PS spots. I'm not even sure Banjo is still eligible though?

4 of the Top 5 graded players from our game v. NE by PFF are UDFAs:

Top 5 graded players:

James Vaughters (+3.3)

Ladarius Gunter (+3.2)

Quinten Rollins (+2.7)

Andy Phillips (+2.0)

Mike Pennel (+1.8)

To me, Gunter and Vaughters are a couple of really special players. I like what they have brought to this team in the little that we've seen. In the practices that I've seen, both seem to be pretty consistent, and they make great contributions on STs. I can't wait to see more from both of these guys. Really hoping Mike Pennel keeps bringing it!
