Will you do better than Hardicourt this year?
Almost finished with my consensus board, but truth be told I hardly pay attention to baseball anymore. Pint might be the perfect name for a Brewer
I'm leaning toward Rutherford being the Crew's pick. I covet a pitcher that projects to be an ace, but since Stearns won't return my emails, I assume he is less excited about HS arms.
Love to see Ian Anderson in Milwaukee, if nothing else for his flute skills
From past history, taking a pitcher in the top 10 is a very risky proposition. That being said, I don't think the Brewers can pass on a guy like Pint if he is there at 5. He has arm speed like no other player in the draft in recent memory. His fastball has hit 102. His arm speed and breaking pitches remind me a lot of a Tim Lincecum type of player. I like him to the Brewers at 5. If not, here is what I have gleaned from reading and the preference i have for these guys from video clips I've seen.
1. Pint (HS) RHP - his stuff is just wicked. Personally I think his makeup is better than Groome, he just isn't prototypical size.
2. Groome (HS) LHP- If you were to genetically engineer a pitcher with plus stuff on all 3 pitches this would be the guy. His maturity has been called into question.
3. Moniak (HS) OF- Seems to do everything well. I liken his toolset to Ryan Braun. I just don't see anyway he slips to 5 though. He is the least likely to be available at 5 other than Puk (below).
4. AJ Puk LHP (College) - dominant stuff, but I prefer the upside of the prep arms here. The Brewers have time to play the long game and maybe that is my mindset when it comes to developing a front of the rotation guy for the crew. Either way, he is the least likely of these guys mentioned to be available at our pick anyways.
5 - 8: Nick Senzel (3b), Corey Ray (OF), Blake Rutherford (OF), Z. Collins (1b-C), Kyle Lewis (OF) - These guys are all High quality bats, I really didnt assign them an order because I'd be happy with any of these guys. The brewers MIGHT take guy like Collins if they can agree to an underslot deal with him and then use that extra money to sign someone that drops in the draft who will be signed over-slot later in the 2nd round. I could see them doing the same with Senzel as well.
There is no drafting for need in MLB. There is also nothing but "best guesses" going on also.
Biggest crapshoot in sports. At least with the 5th pick they have some more cash to spread around, hopefully find a couple players whose talent can translate/stay healthy/heads on straight.
Absolutely. None of these guys with the exception of Burdi (closer) will hit the majors this season. There is no drafting for need. The only "need" i can see is that there is next to zero way we will get a top of the rotation starter through free agency. We need to draft them or in the case of CC Sabathia.. trade for them. We made some good moves for pitchers in the last decade via trades (Sabathia, Grienke, Marcum) all were solid for us. Now, the trick is to have the farm system stocked enough to be able to acquire these guys.. and the other half of the equation is to actually develop top end of the rotation guys from our own system where we would have 6 years of legit control over them and hopefully entice them to extend them in a mutually beneficial contract (i.e.: Braun's deal).
So, while Prep pitchers have been very black or white in terms of results. I think you need to invest in guys that profile to be potential top of the rotation (cy young type future talents) if you have the opportunity to do so (especially when rebuilding). Our farm system is already top 5 in the MLB.. Heck if we end up trading Lucroy and Braun it will likely be the best.
No history of developing pitching is what scares me the most.

It may be a while before that list changes.
Among current Brewers, Willie Peralta is 21st with 38 wins and may be looking at a demotion if and when Garza is added to the roster, and Chris Capuano was at 18th with 45 wins.
Jimmy Nelson is next among active Brewers in 54th spot with a whopping 18 wins.
Wow... Is that list sad... Of all that list, Higurea is the only true ace.
Mike Caldwell sported a pair of aces in '78 and '79.

Dave Winfield once described that '82 team as the ugliest team in baseball. Slaton was a pretty handsome dude, but most of those guys were pretty homely.
That is a very sad list. Sheets should have been the franchise leader, injury, lack of work ethic in offseason, and just being on flat bad teams was his downfall.
The Brewers need to start somewhere and change this putrid SP history.
Chatter is pointing to the Brewers drafting Corey Ray at #5. The OF out of Louisville hit over .320 with medium power, and had 46/46 steals this season for Louisville. A very smart baserunner, will profile to any OF position (probably the corners though with Phillips in CF)
Pint looks to be gone at #4.. if the rumors are true. Completely throwing a wrench into the whole thing would be in Puk is available at #5. Does the crew take him with Pint off the board (and maybe Ray too?)

Only issue for me is he isn't that big of a guy. Im not sure if he will have the power to be an ideal LF or RF. If he can be a quality guy like Dustin Pedroia - then ok.. jackpot (who he says he models his game after). Otherwise, the guy does everything decently (except he sounds like he is shaky in CF right now- much more instinctual in the corners). The Brewers must have loved him... so Im sold. This new group seems to really focus in on acquiring and developing young talent. Gotta go with their analysis here (especially if they save a little money and can apply that to the other 2 picks later today- not sure if that is the case though).

I guess it depends for me.. lets see what they do with the next 2 picks like EKB suggested.
They did something similar with Meidros - then took Gatewood and Harrison as over slot guys later in the sandwich section and 2nd round.
Really is akin to trading down in the NFL draft, without physically trading down... in that case they got 3 1st round talents.
Many people are saying he won't be an under slot guy. Which is curious to me, they really are high on his tools then.
The steals 44/44 or whatever it is.. that is nice to see.. intelligence on the base paths is good.
I still think you need to take a shot at a TOR (top of rotation) pitcher. But, they must not have been high on Puk (didnt quite dominate this season like you'd want) or Groome (probably maturity/signability issues).
