PACKERS

Here are 3 things to watch as the Green Bay Packers face the Cincinnati Bengals

GREEN BAY – Here are three things to watch as the Green Bay Packers face the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday at Paycor Stadium.

Should the Packers starters play more than a series or two?

The Bengals are expected to hold out most of their starters, so coach Matt LaFleur could leave quarterback Jordan Love in the game for a quarter or more with less risk of him facing overwhelming pressure from Cincinnati’s aggressive front four. Love needs all the work he can get, but how much could be determined by how long LaFleur wants to keep the No. 1 offensive line on the field. It’s unlikely he would switch to the No. 2 line while Love is still in the game. Given Love just practiced against the Bengals, keeping him in the game a long time isn’t necessary, but it sure wouldn’t hurt.

Will Zach Tom play more at right tackle or at center?

At some point, LaFleur must decide whether his offensive line is better off with Zach Tom at center or at right tackle. Of late, Tom has been playing right tackle ahead of Yosh Nijman and third-year pro Josh Myers has held onto the center position. It’s a little surprising that Nijman hasn’t played more on the right side, but Tom has apparently outplayed him significantly. Myers has not been consistent and may be in jeopardy of losing his job. Tom may be locked in as a starter Week 1, so the decision might be whether the line is better off with Myers at center or Nijman at right tackle. How all three perform this preseason will determine how things shake out.

Rookies upfront will have to mature quickly

The Packers are going to be counting on first-round draft pick outside linebacker Lukas Van Ness to help solidify the edge, especially with Rashan Gary coming off a torn ACL and the Packers not wanting to overload him early in the season. But he isn’t the only one who must develop fast. Fourth-round pick Colby Wooden and sixth-round pick Karl Brooks have been running with the No. 2 unit behind Kenny Clark and Devonte Wyatt, which means they are one injury away from being in the regular defensive line rotation. They are going to get a ton of snaps in the preseason and, while pass-rushing is their strength, their ability to play the run might determine how much the coaches trust them.

Bakhtiari and Jaire not suited up. Alexander has been limited at practice, because of a groin injury. Not considered serious long-term, just precautionary.

Packers starting OL in warmups: Yosh Nijman, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Jon Runyan, Zach Tom.
