Evan Williams headshot

Overview

Williams was a tad more consistent in 2022 while at Fresno State, but he was also put in better position to succeed. He is broad-hipped with limited agility and athleticism to align too far away from the line of scrimmage. He’s a box safety with a good feel for finding entry points and making tackles near the line. He can match up underneath and is average in zone but will allow too many big plays against NFL wideouts. He has a chance to impress on special teams but inconsistent open-field tackling could hurt his chances of becoming a viable backup strong safety.

Strengths

  • Plays with the mindset of a linebacker and good stopping power.
  • Knows where entry points are located as a run defender in the box.
  • Rushes downhill to make hits on pass catchers.
  • Does a nice job of closing out crossing routes from high safety.
  • Rough-and-tumble play demeanor fits special teams mold.

Weaknesses

  • Frame looks less athletic and more broad and burly.
  • Will struggle against run and pass when aligned in big space.
  • Below-average anticipation to the route in man coverage.
  • Lacks long speed to close the distance over the top.
  • Missing reactive athleticism to keep missed tackle total from piling up.

So we only had to give up the 6th we got in the trade back (where we ultimately picked up Cooper) to move up 15 spots?  That's a heck of a deal.

So basically we moved back 4 spots in the 2nd to move up 15 spots in the 4th and got an extra 5th rounder to boot.

Given this trade was with the Jets, and the 6th we gave them we got for trading back from the 2nd round pick we got from the Jets for Rodgers, in some way the Jets got part of their original 2nd round pick back in this deal.

Let's hope:

Bears have so few picks they spend one on a punter? Maybe they're not so confident in their new offense.

Ummmmm......

Now this guy is a guy. I thought they should have taken in round 3. I'm glad they still got him.

If Hafley wants smart DB, he got one. One of the smartest around. Reminds me a lot of another S we had at Fresno State, James Sanders. Spent quite a few years starting for the Pats.

Also fearless...will hit people with zero regard for his own body. Max effort guy, every play. That's how a DB with a 4.6 40 gets drafted in R4.

If the fans want to feel better about the draft they can just pretend we took Williams in the 3rd and Hopper in the 4th.

Most QBs are cocky but they don't come into the NFL with such outright arrogance. You didn't see this from the Manning bros, Luck, or Lawrence, all of whom have been "the man" their entire lives before being a #1 pick. He's going to get humbled very quickly. Will be interesting see how he responds to his first 4 interception game where he's sacked 8 times.

Not unlike his hero, AR.

You also don't see many QB's crying on their mommy's shoulder after a loss.  As soon as this kid faces any adversity in the NFL he's going to lose it and start pointing fingers and blaming others.

He's the kind of guy who likes to talk shit and when he gets punched in the mouth he (literally) runs home crying to mommy.
