Well, I just set up all the details for another couple of trips to Vegas in 2005.

I am excited and want to have a discussion of all things Vegas.

Stories, where you guys stay, favorite sportsbooks, etc. Anything and everything.

I go out twice a year, once with my dad in January, and another time with the wife. Would like to sneak another one in with the fella's, but that could prove to be tough.

I have been staying at the Flamingo, and have been very happy. My host always has what I want.

So, let's talk Vegas.

I know BPG went not too long ago, so I would like to hear a trip report also.

If you're in the mood for a game right out of 'Vegas Vacation', go to Harrah's Party Pit. There is a card game called Three Play.

You put out three piles of bets (they can be different amounts). For the first bet, you are dealt one card for a simple game of war against the dealer. High card wins.

For the second bet, the card you had for your war hand becomes your first card for a game of black jack. You play it like a normal hand of black jack.

For your third bet, you take your black jack hand and the dealer adds to it until you have 6 cards (I think it's 6 - it might be 5 but I don't remember). You take your best 5 card poker hand and are paid accordingly. Jacks or better gets you 1:1, two pair gets you 2:1, etc.

On top of that, you can put a bonus bet out. If you win all three hands, your are paid 6x your bonus bet.

It's kind of quirky at first, but my wife and I played for about 2 hours and managed to win a little bit. My wife doesn't normally play any table games, but she liked this.
Hey Edge.. Cool I go to Vegas a couple of times a year... I love Vegas We usually stay at the Westward Ho, Yep thats right, the Westward Ho, a small Casino on the end of the strip across from the Riveara, and between the Stardust and Circus. ( Best slots in Vegas)

I will be going to Vegas this February 4th -7th as I love the Super Bowl parties that the Casino's put on. I am also going May 19th - 22nd for my bachealor party.

Best Sports books in my oppinion are the Stardust and Mirage... I love to bet college basketball.

As far as places to eat, any Steak Buffet in town will do. Pretty Cheap and filling. If you get a chance go into the Westward ho and get yourself a Mega-Dog (14 inches long 3/4 lb) and a flavored Mega Margarita 24oz of Teguila for $1.99 ...

Have a great Trip...
Thats funny... You know its always the ladies that get lucky. My fiance hit a $1000.00 Jackpot on the wheel of Fortune slot machine. (Those slots are the most addicting by the way) Razzer I just keep putting money in hope to Spin the darn wheel. Confused

But yeah Let it Ride is pretty cool, I lose my patience with that game though I prefer Blackjack, and any kind of Poker
That sounds messed up Cheezers. Maybe I will try it when my wife and I go out.

My game of choice is craps. I don't know what it is, but I can't get enough of it. I actually got my wife to play once, and it was hilarious. She was shooting and on her first roll the dice only made it about half way down the layout. The boxman told her to make sure they hit the back wall, so her next roll she absolutely launched them. One of the die actually ended up in a guy's shirt pocket at the end of the table. After that she passed the dice never to play again.

Another time at the Paris, there was a very attractive women with a low cut dress on who was all of a D cup. She was having the roll of her life when one of her boobs popped out. She went on for a good 5 minutes without her or her husband noticing. Me and an older guy just sat there laughing. After she finally noticed, and tucked it back in, the older guy next to me throws out a red and says, "Hard Six for the shooter, since she gave me a hard six (inches)". After that I threw out a red, and said basically said the same thing except I said "hard ten". The woman who was red with embarrassment said "really?". I don't think her husband liked that.
I'm right here. Smiler

Obviously I'm out there a lot. I have some friends in the casino industry, always a great time. My favorite place to stay is Mandalay Bay but I can't always get the kind of rate I like. Lately I've stayed a lot at the Trop, I usually get a nice corner suite, great pool, swim up blackjack.

I've always preferred the "older" places, than the new megaresorts. Love Caesars. Stay downtown sometimes, the Nugget is nice as is Las Vegas Club. Play mostly craps and poker, some blackjack and video poker when I want to relax.

I won't be out there again until June when I plan to play in one or two World Series of Poker events.
I agree with you Vic. I prefer the "older" places also. I used to stay at the Paris, but the California yuppie scene got old really fast.

The last 3 years I have been staying at the Flamingo. It is getting a little rundown, but I like it a lot. Perfect location, nice pool (for the wife), and the dealers and clientelle are just normal people not trying to portray all the "image". I also like it because I get comped. I bet a healthy amount, but by no means do I go crazy. If I wanted to get comped at Bellagio or the Bay, they would probably laugh at me. But that's OK because I don't need all the glitz.

I don't like Ceasar's cause I can't win there. I hate it. Also the waitress' are like 65 years old. But if I could win there, I wouldn't care.

Anybody ever go to the El Cortez downtown about 2 blocks off of Freemont? Talk about sticking out like a sore thumb.
I like Barley's on Sunset. I think it may just outside of the Las Vegas city limits in Henderson. A brew-pub/sports bar with their own sports book. The only other gambling is a bank of slot machines off to one side. Great place to watch all the NFL games. Lots of large and small-screen TVs througout the place, and plenty of seats. The beer is quite good - mostly German style lagers, which is not common for brewpub operations, which normally make ales. Some of their beer has started winning medals at the Great American Beer Festival. I've made a point of going there my last three trips to Las Vegas.
I like the Flamingo too. Barbary Coast is decent, their rooms are nice and reasonable priced, great location. There was a place called Bourbon Street, right off the strip that was good.

My all time favorite was Little Caesars. It was in a strip mall next to Bally's (where Paris is now). They had about 6 blackjack tables, 2 craps tables (crapless craps like old Vegas World had), and some machines. All they had was beer and hot dogs and soda. The cashier was about 80 and was also the only waitress. If she was busy the pitboss would go around and ask if anyone wanted a beer or hot dog. The guy who owned it was loaded though. He had a tiny sportsbook in the corner and would take any size bet. Bob Stupak bet $1.1 million on the super bowl there one year, and won. When the owner died it was sold, turned into a fashion outlet for awhile and then the whole strip mall was razed.

I owned the domain name LittleCaesarsCasino for a long time. I never put any site up, I planned to put one up honoring the old place one time. Then I was contacted by the lawyers for Caesars Palace claiming I was infringing on their name, I had to give up the domain or face legal action. Smiler
I was there this summer. Stayed at TI. Nice hotel, only problem was my room was right above the bay and when they did the show in the bay the fireworks would go off right in front of the window of my room.

Didn't do a whole lot of gambling as I got married while I was there, and most of my time was taken up with issues related to that, plus a side trip to the Grand Canyon. All I can say about that place is pictures do not do it justice, you have to see it for yourself.

I can however, recommend a couple of good restaurants. Hugo's Cellar, at the 4 Queens, was perhaps the best meal I've ever had at a restaurant, and the service was impeccable. My wife was given a long stemmed red rose as soon as we walked in the door. The food was exellent. I had the stuffed shrimp, and they were the largest shrimp I've ever seen. My wife had the double lobster tails, 2 7 ouncers. They were very good also.

The other place is William B's at the Stardust. Not quite as good as Hugo's but still very nice, and a little easier on the wallet as well. Also had a meal at the Voodoo Cafe at the Rio H/C. Overpriced and the food was not very good.
We went back in February and stayed at Flamingo. It might not be the prettiest place, but it's in a great location (close to everything on the Strip), and it's fairly reasonable as far as prices go.

Paris is neat to visit, but it's a little too stuffy for us. Count me in with the Caesers group. I love that place. However, my luck isn't too good there. Mad
I will be going there for New Years. Been years since I have been there.
I am a craps player and Holdem and BlackJack.
I am still banned from playing craps at 3 casinos. I won everytime I went, so they told me I must be cheating and banned me. They dont have to prove that you are cheating.
Same with blackJack, they said I was either psychic or cheating. I never lose.
They have someone watch me, everytime I play in Phoenix.
My wife and I were in Vegas in September for our anniversary. Stayed downtown at the Nugget. Not too shabby I have to say. It was our first trip.

Plenty of good places downtown to play. Las vegas club has some of the best handicappers in Vegas. Golden Gate for Blackjack. If LING shows up, leave! You have to get the mega-dog at the westward ho, it hangs off the sides of the plate. Circus circus is pretty dumpy, but we had a little luck there in the slot tourney, when you win you get to go into the little booth with the cash flying around.

As far as sportsbooks go I was most impressed with the one at Mirage. I watched the colts kill the packers there. But my wife won a nice $600 jackpot on a slot in the meantime. Also, The Golden Nugget has, IIRC, a 20 play card, with various point spreads, O/U's etc...If you get all 20 it's a cool Million. I took the chiefs @ -3.5 that week, when Houston returned the last minute INT for a TD, and san fran +11 the same week when seattle cleaned their clock to the tune of 35-0. 18 of 20 = -$5.00.

I would have to say the most impressive places we visited were the Mirage, New York, New York (ride the coaster, nice heartline spin...but it's very rough and jerky, keep your head back!) I loved the Luxor, its just huge. We walked thru the Flamingo, almost stayed there, It was nice enough i think that's where we'll stay next time. And CHEETAH'S! Only drawback is a bottle of domestic beer and some water was 15 bucks before the tip.
The hub and I absolutely LOVE Vegas... so much to do, and if you know what you are doing-- go at the right times, take advantage of comps, know where to get the most for your $$$, you can make a pretty inexpensive vacation out of it. When we compare it to the Orlando theme parks about an hour from here, really a good bargain, especially when it comes to meals and lodging.

Our favorite place to stay is the Trop-- older, but good location (we like the south end of the Strip), generous comps, and great pool area (including a pool that is open 24 hrs. a day). We get tons of offers from them, free rooms and such, even though we are by no means high rollers. Prefer the Island Tower there, big tubs and close to the pool. Smiler

We've also stayed at the Excalibur, Treasure Island, Circus Circus (never again, lol), and the Stratosphere. Really would like to stay at Caesars', the Mirage, and Mandalay Bay sometime.

We play the slots mostly, $.25 and some $1. My biggest hit was for $2160 on a Megabucks machine in '02 ( pic ) and the hub hit for $1500 on a WOF machine this June. We know the slots are a poor bet, especially the progressives, but we set our limits and stick to 'em.

One of the things we like best about traveling out there are the many gorgeous places in that region of the country to take sidetrips to... we spend as much time outside of Vegas as in it. Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Death Valley, Valley of Fire, ect. Anyways, here is our trip report from June-

June Vacation

Pretty broke now so don't know when our next trip out will be... but hopefully things will change, and it will be soon!
I like to play poker. Mirage, Bellagio, and Mandalay Bay are some of the better poker rooms that I like to play in. There are small poker tournaments all over the place, some with like a $25 buy-in so you can get World Series of Poker excitement without mortgaging the house. Luxor and Mandalay Bay have nice morning/noon tournaments. Look up Card Player Magazine online for a list of tourneys or grab a magazine sitting out in a poker room for list of daily tournaments.

Don't take any taxis, they cost too much. Take the city bus up/down the strip and off-strip casinos have free shuttles.

I think it's foolish to play table games but I understand the attraction of gambling. If you must do table games, the best places are downtown in the morning or off-strip casinos like The Orleans in the morning and you'll be able to play $2 games. If you can afford to play higher and lose more, then find a casino you like and play exclusively at that casino. Sign up for their players club program and you'll get comps depending on how much action you give them.

Just about every casino will have a desk somewhere with the weekly magazines that are given out free. Page through them for coupon specials. You can find specials on shows like two people for $15 and a drink is included. You get what you pay for, some of the shows can be cheesey, but it's still good value for the money.

Do some web searches for the Vegas Chamber of Commerce and drill down for links that will list the big name shows for when you will be in town. The big names are always there, I've seen shows like Penn and Teller and Rodney Dangerfield.

Helicoptor rides, roller coasters, shopping, Hoover Dam, all worthwhile if those are things that interest you.

Watching the sinking pirate ship, don't go out of your way to see that.
Paka-

That's quite a trip report. You don't mess around. You probably need a vacation after your vacation just to recuperate.

I make sure to go downtown for at least 1 day, but I probably wouldn't like to stay overnight down there. But you really get to meet some characters down there. A lot of locals also. Kinda fun.

The first time in the Four Queens, a guy with three fingers had a roll that lasted about an hour. When it was finally over my racks were overflowing and his had only a small stack. I couldn't figure out how he didn't make any money. Regardless, I haven't won there since.

Tooner-

I know what you are saying about table games as opposed to poker. Craps has the best odds and the least house advantage of the table games. The problem is not a lot of people know how to bet, throwing their money away on the props. Morons.
I planned on playing poker my last trip, but didn't feel like sitting around for an opening at the Flamingo. I still haven't played casino poker, only home games, so I really want to try it soon. I will probably look for a 1-3 game to start and see what happens. I do very well in our games, but that doesn't mean a thing when I finally play at a casino, so hopefully my learning curve won't break me. But you gotta start somewhere.

For my March trip, I am taking my wife to see Duran Duran at the Hard Rock. For all the times I have been out there, I still haven't been to the Hard Rock. Looks to be a little too trendy for my liking, but oh well.

What can you guys tell me about the Hard Rock?

I want to hear some more stories about Vegas. I've got a ton, but I want to hear others. I never get sick of talking about that place.
I also am a tables player and love 3 card poker but I play here in the UP rather than go to Vegas anymore. I used to go three times a year but it got old and besides I can lose just as much without all the expense of going their.the Island Hotel Casino outside of Escanaba Mi is a great one for all the table games and a nice place to visit.
I didn't think the Hard Rock was anything special the one time I stopped in. If you want to see the rock n roll artifacts, that's fine, I guess. If you want to gamble, does it really matter where? A table is a table, if the limits are in youyr budget, it's easy to get to (why drive across town?), it's not smokey, or people next to you aren't scary, and you're having fun, then you're all set.

The big, huge casino-resorts are fun to walk through once but once is enough so I don't have a need to go back to the Hard Rock. I gravitate toward activities that I enjoy, mainly the poker. Smiler

The main thing I would advise for a novice to casino poker is to OBSERVE your opponents. FOrget all that stuff you hear about twitching noses, the way the eyes move, etc. When I say OBSERVE I mean KNOW what the other players raised with. Do they check raise? Do they bluff? Will they fold to a raise? Will they call no matter what? Knowing these things means you can adjust your play to each individual player. Someone who calls no matter what is going to suck out on you but more than likely is usually playing bad cards. Some players know how to be aggressive, some like to be aggressive, and some think you need to be aggressive. There's a difference in all three cases. You will see a lot of bad play and bad players in low limit poker; don't try to emulate them if their "strategy" seems to be working, just try to understand their thought process in why they play the way they do. Understanding and knowing your opponents is very powerful. It doesn't always gaurantee a win but you can win more or lose less if you can dodge bullets or know when to kill.
PackerRick & edgefour- Thanks!

Yep, we definitely need time to recover from our trips, lol!! I guess the most extreme thing we did was play the golf course in Death Valley in the end of July, 2002. It was particularly hot then, even for there; thermometer in the shade a little while after our afternoon round showed 125. Had the course to ourselves, of course. Wink

We take it easier when it Vegas itself. And speaking of extreme, anybody been on the "X-Scream" at the Strat there? I'll go on most rides, but I took one look at that and was like "NO WAY!!" Eeker

One thing we really enjoyed too, a sidetrip up to Mt. Charleston for some snowboarding one March. Amazing that less than an hour from the Strip, there is a ski resort!

Next thing on the agenda for our next trip out-- I want to fish Lake Mead. I've been wanting to for a few years now; I'm a huge fishing nut.

I have only been to vegas 4 times..all in the last 4 yrs...I would love to go atleast once or twice a yr, but with all the gaming here in Wisc and FIB land we use our vacation for other things...But Vegas Rocks if thats your thing..Even if you Don't think Vegas is your thing you should really try and make one trip out there in your lifetime...I dont have alot of time right now to talk about what we enjoyed or like to do out there right now..

My Parents and I do alot of our gaming on the Harrahs River Boats south of the border in Chicago so we get comped some really good room rates or even Free rooms..So we stay at the RIO in LV..

The Rio has been one of my parents favorites since switching from the smaller casiono's, and We for the most part love it...Some of that has to do with the Comps..Hard to pass up $39.99-59.99 tops for a room on weekends and sometimes even better than yet..If we played more at the RIO the rooms would be totally free...My parents normally acheive that..not us tho..The rooms are all considered sweets and are very nice and are not a hassle to get to..The GF and I love the Pool area, we are both nite owls and come back to the room alot of times when the sun is coming up..So every Morning we will go down to the pool early and have it to ourselves..Cant beat sitting in the whirlpool nursing a bloody marry..We normally head down to the Pool around 7ish to lounge around and catch up on some Z's untill around 1 or so..Then head back up to the room and relax and plan out the evening..The pool is a huge selling point for us..The pool does get a lil crowded in the afternoons but not that crazy..They do have a kiddie pool area if you have children but I hardly see many using it, so thats a good thing...Nothing against kids but its great not hearing them playing and screaming....

The only real negative we have on the RIO IS the gambling.

I would say we both play Video Poker 75% of the time we gamble and really don't care for the RIO'S Machines..We do alot of our video poker playing at Gold Coast, Palms, Circus Circus and Boulder Staion...We're table players the rest of the Time, mostly BJ... On the weekends all the BJ tables are $25 min...If your lucky JUST MAYBE, one $10 table. The craps mins are just as steep.. We both are more the $5-$15 a hand type players with a occasional run at the Qurter chips if we are on a hot streak... If betting greens and blacks all day IS your think than go nuts.

As long as we remain Diamond member players at Harrahs we will continue to use the Rio as our Home Base and either walk to the Palms or Gold Coast to get our fix of Video Poker or hop in the rental car and Gamble elsewhere.

We have not made a winter trip to LV, but if we did we would probably stay at a place that more suits our gambling style and better machines..But we love the room rate and pool so much that we allways schedule our trip when the pool is open..Normally late SEPT...I couldnt imagine not sitting next too the pool tipping one back after a long night of play..
I agree with ya hntr, kids do not belong in Las Vegas!

As for the Rio, the hotel and casino are nice, and the "All American Sports Bar and Grill" is good, and the cocktail waitress' are some of the best looking on the strip (great uni's also). I just can't win there. I doubt I will be back in January, but may stop there in March.
I like how the waitress' at the Rio have to dance on the bank of slot machines. Good entertainment.

I don't know if you heard, but Harrah's Corp. is buying out Park Place Entertainment which includes the Flamingo, Bally's, Paris, and Ceasars.

According to my casino host the corporate offices are really cracking down on comps. According to her they were not going to have a casino or VIP rate anymore. So basically if your play is high enough, you will get a free room, if it is not you will have to pay the going rate. Obviously, she was upset about this. It looks like Harrah's Corp. believes they can dictate the rates of rooms because they have aquired so many more. If this is the case, they are going to lose a ton of business. I like the Flamingo, mostly because of location, but if I didn't stay for free, or at the very least got a casino rate, I would never pay $200 / night. No chance. For that you can stay at the Bellagio.

Overall, Vegas got way too mainstream. There was something to be said of the old seediness of the place, and that is now gone. Corporations are what's wrong with it. Oh, well.

I don't know if any of you ever watched the TV show "American Casino" on the Discovery Channel, but they featured a casino called Green Valley Ranch. It is actually a pretty good show. I am thinking of checking the place out.

Anyone ever been there?

I've only been out there once, thinkin' about makin' a trip back there with a friend that has never been out there. I stayed at the Luxor, and I loved it.

Great stories guys, keep 'em comin'.

You can stay pretty cheaply at the Imperial Palace, but stay clear of the back bar at night because it is loaded with transvestites. No kidding.

You can probably get a good rate at Harrah's, and they have a great outdoor bar with live music.

Ha! How about FREE?

Call the Westward Ho and find out when they will come back to Milwaukee. Milwaukee is one of their favorite markets so they put on a seminar once or twice each year.

They have a seminar where they automatically sign you up in there plyer's club and they will comp you three free nights and give you a free show and dinner.

There is no obligation and if you give them the action they're looking for you can keep going back for free.

I stay away from the table games so I don't get to go back for free any more but it's their fault for signing me up. Wink
I love the Cheapovegas site, lol! Smiler

Well, as for my opinion, you could stay at Circus Circus or the Westward Ho pretty cheap, but it is worth the few extra bucks (though it might not be any extra if you get a good deal) to stay at the Flamingo or Trop, and have a good pool area and good location. Though we always stay in the tower rooms at the Tropicana, you can get the "Garden Rooms" very cheap sometimes, and some of them even have balconies overlooking the pool area. Another option would be the Stratosphere, real cheap and nice casino, but it is just so far north, in the middle of nowhere.
... Oh yeah, even if you don't gamble that much at all, be SURE to sign up for the slot clubs wherever you go!! Some places (Trop & Strat) will give free room offers for very little play, and many places will send discounts and such just for being on the list it seems.

And if you ARE going to play, signing up is a must. Throwing money away not to, really.
Hey Tooner, are you going to play in a WSOP event next year? They've changed it from May to June 3 - July 15 at the Rio. 45 tournaments instead of the usual 33. My plan was to try to win an online sat sometime before then for the main event ($10K buyin). But that starts July 7 and I can't make it, so I'm looking to enter one of the other tournaments in June. The cheapest one is $1k.

I play at PartyPoker. Mostly $30/$50 tournaments (single table). I don't have time for larger tournaments usually. I did play one on Saturday, finished 41 out of 690. $4500 for first would have been nice, I won $93.00.

You are right, TONS of fish out there. Which makes bad beats even worse. My AA getting beat by a 27 that draws out a straight. Grrrr.... Cool

No, I may go to Los Angeles with some friends and hit the card rooms out there this year (2005). The date change causes problems with some members of my "group."

The way I've been playing in Green Bay lately, I probably should take up needlepoint. Roll Eyes

As for the discussion, I forgot to add that you can get cheaper room rates if you play poker at most of the Vegas casinos (if they have a card room, that is). That's another way to lower the hotel cost.
I would only stay at Westward Ho if I lost my senses of sight and smell. Otherwise, I would not...LoL, Im just sorta kidding..I have never walked in the place but one of My Buddy stays there only cuzz he is a cheap-azz as he says..He says The casino is small, dark, and smokey..He says The 99 cent dog is about all you can do to keep it down unless you have a cast iron stomach...

If I recall right, he pays something like 20 bucks a night for the motel room he gets..If your just looking for a cheap place to sleep and dont mind a VERY BASIC room, or mind walking some distance to the casino like my buddy says go for it..I say No TY..Food and drink prices are all fair he said...But who pays for a drink in Vegas? I never have or will..I play so much Video Poker I just plop down at the bar and as long as your your playing when the bartender comes around its all good..A nice tip will have him or her asking if your ready for another..Same with the waitresses on the floor..

By no means am I ripping on the Ho because I have never been there...Im just going on what my buddy says..I know this next Feb he is staying at the Boardwalk, anybody know much about that place?
Lots of good tips here. One attraction I havent seen mentioned in this thread is the Fremont Street Experience. It is a sound and light show that is mindboggling. 12.5 million LED lights and a 550,000 watt sound system. I highly recommend this show, it's free and it is a great way to stretch your legs and get away from gaming for a while. It is at the North end of the strip in Old Las Vegas.
