Raji is kind of a tricky guy to deal with contract wise. After the 2010 season, he was worth every penny as he really held down the fort for the D-Line while there were tons of guys getting hurt around him. I think he led all NTs in sacks in 2010 as well.

Then came 2011.... I know I saw a statistical website that had Raji rated the absolute worst vs. the run among the 40 NTs they evaluated. He wasn't one of the worst, he was rated THE WORST. It was an astounding dropoff from the solid to spectacular play he brought in 2010.

In 2012, I haven't really seen any evaluations of his play overall, but I'd have to say from what I saw he looked somewhere in between 2010 and 2011. He showed some flashes here and there of his physical talent, but there were other times where it was surprising how a talented big guy like he is could get just blown out vs. the run.

Hopefully the 2013 version of Raji is closer to 2010, if it is, he'll deserve a large contract. If he's like he's been the past 2 years which ranged from awful to pretty good, I think a large contract would be a questionable decision for the Pack.

Joe - they will probably keep those values, but add some up front guarantees to get ARod what he wants/deserves. Look at Flacco's contract closely. the first 2-3 years are very cap friendly, as most large contracts are. the key is the guaranteed money.
Pickett is an UFA next year too.

Packers "scheduled" to be UFA in 2014 (according to http://www.spotrac.com/) :

Rob Francois
Morgan Burnett
Graham Harrell
M.D. Jennings
Johnny Jolly
James Jones
John Kuhn
Jamari Lattimore
Clay Matthews
Evan Dietrich-Smith
Michael Neal
Marshall Newhouse
Ryan Pickett
Andrew Quarless
B.J. Raji
Brandon Saine
Sam Shields
James Starks
C.J. Wilson
Jermichael Finley
I'm assuming Rodgers and Matthews will be signed well before the start of the 2014 league year.

Resigning Raji doesn't concern me anymore. His cap hit for 2013 is $6.5 million. If the Packers want to keep him, they can probably do so without impacting their cap position too badly. If they decide not to keep him, then that's fine too. Pickett is as good as gone after this year (TT doesn't pay guys his age).

Consequently, I would be shocked if the Packers didn't take a DT in the first two rounds of this year's draft.

IMO, Shields and Bulaga are far more important to resign. Both have shown signs of becoming dominant at their very important positions.

I'd put Burnett next.

The rest are expendable.

Hopefully the contracts Rodgers and Matthews sign will leave room to keep the most important guys. If not, well, the need to keep Rodgers and Matthews is greater than the need for Raji, Shields, Bulaga and Burnett.

Agreed. Those are absolutes and there is no question in their abilities.

I could see others playing themselves into a few more years in GB.

Lattimore
Newhouse
Jones (though he's more likely to play himself into a mega-deal - good on him)
Quarless
even Jolly if he gets a shot
I think Finley is one and done no matter what he does this year. If he plays like a monster they won't be able to afford him. If he doesn't he'll want more than he's worth and they never franchise anyone. I think if they had any long term interest they would have extended him before that bonus and massaged his number moving forward. He's not a guy who's going to take any kind of discount and after he sees what Rodgers gets he'll get pie-eyed for what he feels he's worth.
@Packerpedia
Guys on @SiriusXMNFL talking about how if Rodgers gets $25M as reported it's a MASSIVE jump past current top rate of just >$20M. Thoughts?

Andrew Brandt always says to look at guaranteed $$ and cash flow and not total numbers or average per year. It will be too much if it straps the Packers to the point they can't field a competitive team around him.

$25 seems a bit of a stretch, $22-23 is more likely given the CBA -induced flat cap. I expect a smaller jump and Aaron doesn't measure his wanker with his paycheck unlike Mr. Insecurity himself, the Flaccid Flacco who crowed right after signing his deal:

" Now I'm elite ! "

.
I guess Rodgers wants to stay around long enough to make all that money in his new pending contract.

From SI:

Aaron Rodgers is changing up his offseason workout routine. The Packers quarterback says he is incorporating more stretching and flexibility work. What is the point? At 29, Rodgers is beginning to realize how flexibility affects motion, and how both are affected by age. He wants to continue to remain flexible and limber and avoid injuries, and he hopes this is a way to do that.
from the linked article above:
quote:
The two sides are also still haggling over how much money will come to Rodgers in the next two seasons, among other issues. Per the terms of the current deal that runs out in 2014, Rodgers is set to earn $19.75 over those two years. That makes him underpaid based on his status and performance.

that last sentence... even tho it may be a reality... wait, no it's not, it's not reality. it's a fantasy world of worth and value based on an infinite scale and the last best contract of a similar player.
could the Packers, if they had the cash, conceivably hamstring the rest of the league if they gave Rodgers $40mil per year? cuz then the next QB to have a good year would need to make more than $40mil per year in order to NOT be "underpaid based on his status and performance".
I know there's no way around it but this is ridiculous thinking for a team game. I also believe it's unsustainable.
(and he walked away grumbling to himself in disgust)
can't wait 2 years to extend him, and if you wait 1 year it will cost a couple of million per season more. matt ryan is due for a new deal. eli is getting real close too. also figure cam newton will breaking the bank soon, and then andrew luck may set a new high after that.

i have faith in tt, russ and mark that a new deal won't cripple the packers long term, and even if we hit some tough cap years aaron would do his best to help the organization.
