The thing is I don't think anyone is overly excited about signing Brooks but it sure would make everyone feel better about depth.

Man I wish Spriggs and Fackrell weren't turning into turds.

I don't like his character (beat the sh*t out of a teammate with a beer bottle in 2013, charged with sexual battery in 2015), but if they feel he's worth the gamble then whatever. He's still a strong run defender, but he's declined as a pass rusher.

NOT PACKER PEOPLE sounds like.  UGH.

No, he hasn't. He's been what he's been since essentially coming into the league. Since 2011, he's tallied between 6-8.5 sacks per season. Nothing more but also nothing less. In 2016, he racked up 6 sacks.

He also had 16 QB hurries last season. To compare, Nick Perry had 17 last season and Mike Daniels had 20. Brooks had the same number of hurries as Leonard Floyd in 2016.

If the Packers can  squeeze another solid season out of him, well worth the 1-2 year deal he'll likely sign. Really, it's a no brainer

Mutual interest to warrant a flight to Titletown.

Never been arrested, but definitely a sketchy past- asked to leave UVA in college and two other disturbing alleged events  - one is still pending.

Sounds like Perry's injury isn't too bad. How bad is Clay's secret injury ??

Mike McCarthy spilled the beans a bit in his press conference on Monday :

Well, we got a little thin there with the pass-rushers going out of the game there fast, with Clay, Nick and Jayrone going out

WTF ??!!

2016 - 920 snaps, 6 sacks, 153 snaps/sack
2015 - 740 snaps, 6.5 sacks, 113 snaps/sack
2014 - 546 snaps, 6 sacks, 91 snaps/sack
2013 - 965 snaps, 8.5 sacks, 113 snaps/sack
2012 - 977 snaps, 6.5 sacks, 150 snaps/sack

Maybe he hasn't declined, he's just never really been a productive pass rusher ever when he's been a full time starter. His most productive season was 2014 when he basically got backup snaps, so maybe he wouldn't be terrible as a backup. Even that productivity doesn't seem worth the character issues, but I could think of worse guys I suppose. [shrug] whatever, he's better than Reggie Gilbert.

Dont fall into the ESPN and fanboy habit of evaluating based on the sack stat. It's misleading. Brooks is very good against the run, had 53 tackles last season. He was also credited with 16 pressures and 6 sacks. Datone Jones by comparison had 22 tackles , did a nice job with 14 pressures, but only 1 sack.

Hope Brooks still has something left. Maybe a nice insurance policy against injury to Clay/Perry or the ineffectiveness of Jarone/Fackrell.

And that's what we're really getting down to. Brooks is a better overall OLB right now than Fackrell or Elliott. He just is. And if the price is right GB kind of needs to sign him.

I still say going to a rotational guy instead of playing a thousand f'ing snaps at LB at middle age will do wonders for him.  Really don't want to see another GB version of Seth Joyner or Hardy Nickerson.

Sure, but keep in mind that pressures don't stop QBs, they merely affect timing. Sacks is one of many stats that are important, but it's the only objective pass rushing stat available. Its hard to say how much pressures and hurries affect QBs, sacks stop the play. Snaps per sack gives you a good idea of productivity vs. opportunity. Many players will put up 8 sacks over 1,000 snaps, but 8 sacks over 500 sacks is impressive.

Defending the run is more what I'm concerned about. Even if Matthews and Perry stay healthy, Fackrell looks like he can be blown off the ball with a fart.  I think what's being missed here is that Fackrell and Elliot are going to be playing a decent amount of snaps even if Matthews/Perry are healthy.

Here's to hoping Fackrell sucks at preseason and somehow just turns on during the season . . . and that Eva Green explains quantum mechanics to me in bed.

I don't think that's unrealistic that Fackrell will have a better season than preseason. He had a pretty quiet preseason last year and turned in a solid season for a rookie 3rd rounder.

Wait, am I wrong to be worried over that sexual battery thing? Was that a long time ago? I hope so.

The timing on his release seems odd.

I expect that TT will vet him well and if he passes that scrutiny then offer him a realistic deal and let the chips fall where they may.

As FL said, I think it had more to do with the scheme shift and his salary was too much for a backup. The sexual battery issue is concerning IMO, it was 2015 and is still pending. It's the same case that was the final straw for Ray MacDonald in the NFL. MacDonald was charged with raping a woman who blacked out from a hot tub head injury, Brooks' involvement hasn't been clear other than the charge of sexual battery. It seems to still be pending.

Did I miss something about Kyle Fackrell's progression?   I need to better understand how he had a productive rookie campaign and how his play (camp, OTAs, preseason) has positioned him well to make an impact this year.

They are remarkably thin at OLB and we've seen what happens to this D over the last few years when Perry or CMIII are hurting or can't generate a pass rush.  It gets ugly in a hurry.

Brooks can help for sure but Dom may really need to get creative this year.

Daniels, Lowry, and Clark can and will create a push up front that will help the pass defense.

18 tackles, 2 sacks and a FF in 176 snaps is not bad production for a rookie 3rd rounder. Even the Packer writer/curmudgeon Bob McGinn wasn't as down as many here seem to be:

KYLER FACKRELL: He looked lost during more than a few practices in August but in the exhibition games found ways to apply steady pressure. He wasn’t as effective rushing against better tackles in the regular season but still finished with 6 ½ pressures in 176 snaps. The 245-pound Fackrell won’t be starting caliber until he makes substantial gains in strength and weight. He’s an interesting player. Fackrell was drafted in the third round because of his height (6-5) and speed (4.65), and he has a way of slipping past blocks. He’s a gamer. Grade: D-plus.

He looked noticeably bulkier/muscular when I saw him at camp in 2017 vs. 2016.

Winston Moss on free-agent OLB Ahmad Brooks, who's visiting today: "Tough. Tough. Physically imposing rusher. Can play against the run. He can do everything that we would ask him to do in our scheme. If he were to be placed on our roster, he could fit right in."

Rob Demovsky, ESPN Staff Writer

A "pending sexual assault charge" may keep him in limbo for a while. That means he may have to be on his best behavior if he wants to play in the NFL. Of course that meant little to Jolly and Guion...

Case vs. McDonald dropped - Brooks case still "pending"

I'm guessing TT & the other 31 teams are well aware of Brooks case. Probably more so than we can find on the innernets.

If the McD rape case was dismissed, I can't see how Brooks would be convicted of a lesser charge.

D+ was extremely generous as a grade and DH nailed it

The local media hacks are wondering where the future All Pro Fackrell is?  Seriously they are not going easy on this guy.   Perhaps the pre-draft scouting reports were just wrong

Won't be the first or last time a player didn't pan out

His problem is that what he did is supposedly on video, whereas in the McDonald case they needed the woman to testify & she refused, so they had no case.

This is encouraging. Until you wonder exactly what it is Moss asks LBs to do.
