Its getting to be that time of year so thought a catch-all thread was in order.

Bill Barnwell at Grantland came out with his All Pro team today. Good read. Packers' entries excerpted below.

Quarterback

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

... Throughout the season, it’s been tough to pin down who is the best quarterback in football. It was Philip Rivers in September, but by the end of October, it was Tom Brady — who had been so bad in September that some wanted to bench him for Jimmy Garoppolo. Aaron Rodgers took over with a freakish November in which he threw for 13 touchdowns without a pick, but even he has slipped in recent weeks.

The guy with the best numbers? That’s Tony Romo, who leads the league in completion percentage (70.3 percent), yards per attempt (8.5), passer rating (114.4), and QBR (82.3). I don’t get the feeling that people are taking his MVP candidacy seriously, which is in part based on the unfair fact of life that he is Tony Romo. You can make a case that those numbers oversell his position; he has narrow leads in each of those categories, missed a game and a half with his back injury, and gets to play with the best running game in football behind the best offensive line in football. I think Romo is phenomenal, but he’s not the best quarterback in the league.

So, given the numbers, given the records, what did I do? I went back to the Quarterback Championship Belt logic and chose the one quarterback I’d want to run out on my team if my life were on the line. That’s Rodgers ...

Wide Receiver

Jordy Nelson, Green Bay Packers

There was a time I thought Nelson was another cog in the Aaron Rodgers machine, a useful-if-limited receiver who might top out as something close to Antonio Freeman in terms of his absolute value. I was very, very wrong. I don’t know that I’ve seen anybody besides Odell Beckham Jr. get consistently more wide open when teams should be double-covering him than Nelson has this season. He’s very clearly the best receiver Rodgers has ever had...

Guard

Josh Sitton, Green Bay Packers

Sitton is a reasonable candidate to be considered the most underrated player in all of football. The 2008 fourth-rounder has made only one Pro Bowl and doesn’t ever get discussed as one of Ted Thompson’s best draft picks, but Sitton consistently stands out as the best player on the league’s sixth-best run-blocking offensive line. STATS has him down for just three penalties and zero sacks this season.

GREEN BAY—Three years ago, Packers receiver Jordy Nelson put up Pro Bowl numbers, with more than 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns.
The problem was 277 yards and five TDs came in the final two games, after all the voting had been tabulated.
This year, Nelson finally earned his first Pro Bowl selection with plenty of big games throughout the season. He was one of five Packers on Tuesday to be selected to the NFL’s annual all-star game, along with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, guard Josh Sitton, fullback John Kuhnand linebacker Clay Matthews...

Seven Packers were named Pro Bowl alternates. Two of them are left tackle David Bakhtiari and right guard T.J. Lang, meaning three-fifths of the Packers offensive line earned some recognition.

“I feel like you could stick our whole line in the Pro Bowl and everyone would fit right in,” Sitton said. “I think to a man we are one of the top few in our positions, every single one of us. We’ve got a heck of a line and hopefully we’ll be able to stay healthy and stick together.”

The other five alternates are running back Eddie Lacy, receiver Randall Cobb, linebacker Julius Peppers, and cornerbacks Sam Shields, and Tramon Williams.

Of the alternate group, Peppers (eight times), Lacy (2013) and Williams (2010) have earned Pro Bowl honors before.

Interesting question. Clay was a great pick, because Ted went out of what we thought of as his comfort zone...he aggressively traded up to get  his guy. In fact, according to the value charts that are floating around out there, he overpaid to do it.

He's the undisputed champion of the 2nd round. It's a damn fine trait to have as a GM  to consistently get 1st round talent with your second pick.

I would have to say I think that Sitton probably is the best pick of them all, however. He landed an All Pro in the 4th, which doesn't happen a lot. I'm not saying he's better than all those 2nd rounders you listed, just that the value is so ridiculous it kind of pushes him to the top.

I had been calling on Clay earlier this year that we needed more production.  The young man came through for the Packers and took his game to another level by taking on another position.

Fantastic work by Clay.

Rodgers has been campaigning for Kuhn. His pass protection is a big part of why he is going, and the block on Peppers in wk 17 last year left a strong/lasting impression. There is a bit of carry-over for some of the players who get the nod.

Linsley should have made it but with the Pro Bowl they usually miss on a guy the first year before finally giving him his due

Pack well represented with 5 Pro Bowlers and countless other Alternates. Lacy has been even better this season than last and should have made it over Shady McCoy

John Kuhn.  All-Pro FB and multiple Pro Bowls.

If I had a son, I'd be teaching him to block adequately and run with a football for three yards and fall down.  Then I'd feed him whatever Al eats.

Isn't that interesting.

Almost as interesting as the fact that Kyle Long (the other second teamer) only had 5 votes.

This is all secondary to your son having the most important attribute. A short monosyllabic name that is unmistakable and easy to pronounce thereby leading to a rock star cult like following for reasons no one can easily explain.
