I blame Tranny Ted for being too successful in the UDFA arena, which is a real indicator of scouting prowess.

Think about it.  The premium (or projected as premium) players are locked into a rotation that includes salary cap implications and a proverbial free pass on a roster spot just by nature of their "projected" value.  Yet teams are still beholden to some degree for picking for need and trying to find the overall player value.

Yet UDFA is freakin' Wild Scouter's rodeo and TT just keeps cleaning up.  If a Frank Zombo is good enough for one year to get you to a Superbowl with limited cap implications I'll take UDFA all day long.

Both of these things.

TT and staff find them.

Then Packers are able to successfully recruit them because players and agents know that TT will give 'em a chance and MM and company will coach them up, and play them if they perform.

There are currently 22 undrafted free agents being evaluated for roster spots. Why does TT covet draft picks when the Packers seem to have more success with undrafted free agents , than with draft picks? Or to phrase it another way, why does a draft and develop team like the Packers draft so poorly, given that that is their principle approach to player personnel?

Thanks YA. I feel so much dumber for reading it.

How about covet draft picks and un-drafted free agents. Thompson and company use both with great success.

Draft so poorly ? I'd say that when compared to the rest of the league the Packers have had enviable success. Sustained success at that. Let's  look at some key contributors, guys that play a bunch when the outcome is in the balance, and how they were acquired:

1) Aaron Rodgers (drafted)

2) Eddie Lacy (drafted)

3) Josh Sitton (drafted)

4) TJ Lang (drafted)

5) David Bak (drafted)

6) Brian Bulaga (drafted)

7) Corey Linsley (drafted)

8) Jordy Nelson ( drafted)

9) Randal Cobb (drafted)

10) Davante Adams (drafted)

11) Andrew Quarless ( drafted)

12 ) Dick Rod (drafted)

13) Kuhn (FA) Soon to be replaced by the hammer from OK

14) James Starks (drafted)

15) BJ Raji ( drafted)

16) Mike Daniels (drafted)

17) L. Guion (FA)

18) Josh Boyd ( drafted)

19) Datone Jones (drafted)

20) Clay III (drafted)

21) Julius Peppers ( FA)

22) Nick Perry ( drafted )

23)Mike Neal (drafted)

24) Casey Hayward ( drafted)

25) Sam Shields ( legendary UDFA)

26) Morgan Burnett ( drafted)

27) Ha-Ha (drafted )

28) Micah Hyde (drafted)

29) ? Rollins / Randall (drafted)

30) Mason Crosby (drafted)

31) Sean Richardson ( UDFA)

32 ) ? Ty Montgomery ( drafted)

That's some great drafting and development. The rest of the roster has more draft picks and bottom of the roster type free agent pick-ups( you can't possibly fill your roster entirely with draft picks. )

"Draft so poorly ? " Super bowl contenders on a regular basis while drafting toward the end of each round !!

"more success with undrafted free agents , than with draft picks" - was this a Bear fan or Viking fan who said this ? Or maybe Digger or Lukey ?

Its a little disappointing to see how much effort is put into repudiating the latest barf from the resident non-linker

On the other hand, its really enjoyable to read the great posts from X4's bestest posters

Thanks Gents !

Q. Matthews sat out two fourth-quarter scoring drives in Seattle because of injury, then played in overtime and a week later in the Pro Bowl. Three Seahawk defensive backs kept playing with injuries that required surgery. Should Matthews have stayed on that field?

A. That's never even come up. We've never even thought about that. I don't even know what the injuries (were) or what kept him off. If you're suggesting someone on our team, in our locker room, would duck out of their responsibility, that's rude of you to ask that question.

So many people in all walks of life feel compelled to demonstrate how smart they are when interviewed. Or interviewing.

Ted takes a different tack. So true to his rural Texas roots. I could see him and Bum Phillips or Sammy Baugh hanging out for an entire week with less than 10 words exchanged.

Ted Thompson will never volunteer for anyone's narrative. It's pretty amazing that he does not admit to any of the inspirational crap that gets piggy backed onto athletics in general and football in particular. A lot of fans eat that **** up and the wonks do everything they can to serve it up steaming.

I don't know that I would be friends with TT but I sure do like the job he does in Green Bay.

Ted giving a presser at TC as I type.

From an ESPN interview:

MM on TT and he Draft & Develop Philosophy

High value investments

Everyone knows you're a draft-and-develop team but this year, before you signed James Jones, you had not added anyone who played a single snap for another team last year, is that an indication of how good of a team you think you have?

McCarthy: "It's really the combination of a lot of things. You have to have a philosophy. There's investment and value that's placed in each player we bring in. We believe in that investment and value. Our first attempt is to continue to make it grow. It's just like anything, if there's a perfect system, trust me, everybody would be running it by now.

This is the way we do it, and there's times that you may hang with a guy a little longer versus getting rid of a guy too fast. You don't want to always err on one side of the equation. We believe in development. That's kind of the core of our success.

Ted brings in quality guys, and we coach them and develop them. Our veteran players that have now been here through it, they know it works, so they invest in it. It's a great place to be if you're a young guy."

Ted was an investment/ stock broker after his playing career ended

Nice piece by McGinn that goes into the roster and TT's philosophy. Many fans don't care for his relatively conservative approach and aversion to risk, but it's served the franchise well.

Maybe the franchise would have been better served by picking up some decent players to plug holes. Like Pats do almost every year. Brady has been to 6 Super Bowls, won 5. Favre and Rodgers been to 3, won 2. Of course cheating might have helped also.

Awesome article cuqui!

Wow, around $45M in cap space next year. If there is a major FA for Ted to nab to help this team in a big way, next year might be that year.

I get the rollover of extra monies into the following year, but wish maybe just once every 2 or 3 years he adds a top talent at a position of need, so we are not wanting for help with a draft pick, and having to wait so long for their development. Aaron's, Clay's and Julius' window for winning a (or another) SB is in the open position for just so long.

Here's the list of the Packers' veteran players entering the final season of their current contracts:

Offense

  • QB Scott Tolzien

  • RB James Starks

  • TE Andrew Quarless

  • G/T Don Barclay

  • G Lane Taylor*

Defense

  • DE Mike Daniels

  • CB Casey Hayward

  • S Sean Richardson

  • OLB Mike Neal

  • OLB Andy Mulumba*

  • ILB Nick Perry  (EDIT/ADD - since they declined his 5th year option)

Specialists

  • K Mason Crosby

  • LS Brett Goode

*Will be a restricted free agent

Daniels will be #1 priority, and then Crosby and Goode... and that might be all they re-sign.

I agree Hungry.

Nothing to get excited about with the thought of losing Mike Neal, Nick Perry, James Starks, Don Barclay, Lane Taylor, Andrew Quarless, Letroy Guion, and Kuhn.

Daniels will be the primary target.  Mason will get a fair deal to stay.

The nerve racking time will be the next year when "four core starters will be in the final year of their contracts: running back Eddie Lacy, left tackle David Bakhtiari and guards Josh Sitton and T.J. Lang." Lacy and Sitton will be big contracts...and two guys we simply cannot lose.
