This was the best Xs and Os coaching job Gard has done. He got a lot out of very little talent outside of Johnny Davis as it might be the weakest group of recruits at Wisconsin in 20 years (especially when you consider Davison was playing an extra year).

Compared to the Big 10 title teams Gard and Ryan had in the past, there were 3 guys that would have even seen the court for the past teams. And only Johnny Davis would have started.

They won a Big 10 title with having 1 guy who would even be in the top 20 players of who they've had the last 10 years and maybe only 2 that would have set foot on the court for the Kaminsky teams.

In the last 10 years, they've had 19 other guys that might have been the 2nd best player on this current team (and I'd take the first three over Johnny Davis) - Kaminsky, Dekker, Koenig, Hayes, Brust, Gasser, T. Jackson, Dukan, Iverson, Happ, Aleem Ford, Pritzl, Trice, Showalter, Vitto Brown, Traveon Jackson, Ryan Evans, Berggren, and Jordan Taylor.

Davison slots into this group somewhere, but in the bottom third.

Charlie Thomas, Reuvers, and Micah Potter would have been at least the 4th best players on this team.

Chucky Hepburn was great for a freshman, but he's redshirting on most of the Badgers teams from 2002-2018.

When you look at the stats, you really wonder how they won 25 games. They shot 30.6% from the floor for the year and they were missing their best guy (Bowman) for half the year. Gard felt he had to leave Crowl (31% from three) on the floor to stretch the defense against Iowa State because the other guys were abysmal all year from there- Jordan Davis (28%), Neath (22%), Wahl (16%), Carlson (5%), and Vogt (0 for 1 for the year).

Outside of Bowman (40%), even their best 3-point shooters would have been among their worst shooters on the previous Big 10 title teams - Davison and Hepburn were both just below 35% and Johnny Davis was 30.6.

Well, maybe the Big Ten just isnโ€™t that good?

Davis is a really, really good college player. Davison is a nice running mate.  Hepburn is an elite defender.  That alone will win them some games.

And yes, if you were a coach with any balls or had the respect of your players you would bench them for playing stupid.  The Badgers game plan against Colgate and Iowa State was horrendous.

They are a terrible 3 pt shooting team yet you allow your bigs to take multiple 3s early in the shot clock despite having a size advantage (Colgate) or foul advantage (Iowa State)?   Thatโ€™s dumb basketball.
