Obviously, the real risk is not at OT. Newhouse and Sherrod are probably as good as any team has at backups. (ANYONE HAVE A COUNTEREXAMPLE???) But the interior of G and C may be questionable. Haven't checked out that one in real game conditions. Red Face
They don't need Tauscher. He's done, or some team would've signed him by now. Newhouse looked good in a really tough situation. All of a sudden he's blocking Julius Peppers on a bunch of snaps on the road. He held his own, and there's still Sherrod. Unless there's another injury at T /knocking on wood/, Tauscher isn't coming back.
I think the question the Packers ask is could he be more affective than Newhouse and give them the opportunity to evaluate if he will be a player worth keeping for the next 3-4 years. I think the Packers look at injuries as evaluation opportunities. Tausch is a middling player at this point. I don't think he fits into the 'best for now and the future' mindset that the Packers stay true to. At this point Wells is the veteran presence for the offensive line. IMO TT typically keeps one solid leader vet around per position group to set the tone. Newhouse gets his shot now and I'm sure Sherrod is going to get extra looks in practice at RT going forward. There's an available spot and I think they look to fill it with competition.

If they bring Tauscher back who do they cut? Tauscher isn't just competing with Newhouse and Sherrod for a job but the 53rd guy on the squad that they think has a chance to be a contributor over the next 3-4 years. That guy could very well be So'oto. There's limited room for declining talent imo. Newhouse faces the responsibility of showing he belongs and showcasing his potential. If he doesn't it's time to move on ala' Barbre and Giocomini.

The pedigree part.

His father John, played football at the University of Houston and was part of three Cotton Bowl teams (1977, 1979, 1980) ... his cousin, Robert Newhouse, is a former Dallas Cowboy fullback great (1972-83) ... has other cousins who played football at Baylor (Reggie Newhouse) and Rice (Rod Newhouse)

The smart part.

You dont need a starting player, you need a viable backup. We have zero guys backing up our line that any sane person would trust blocking for a franchise QB. Not even a guy on the level of Colledge.

Anyways, he was sacked alot last season.. and if either of our tackles or Center goes down we are in a predicament.

Time and time again, Ted has shown that he does not know what he is doing on the lines. Last season Tauscher bailed him out, will that happen again this season? They are going to need someone.

I still have major doubts that this team can even win 10 games this year. They are way to thin and average on both lines.

His record with TX A&M is awesome. Seems to be a lot of quit in that team... at least in the 2nd half of games.
The article says Sherman will probably keep his job next season, but he may be forced to hire an offensive coordinator. Sherman calls the plays right now. Rossley is said to be waiting by the phone (unless he's already on Sherman's staff...I can't see those two quitting each other).

Sherman's gonna be shark bait in SEC waters, I'm afraid.

EDIT: Of course Rossley and Sherman are still together. Rossley is the quarterbacks coach. Yikes.
I'm with michiganjoe. I think they'll let the new guy hold it down as long as possible. If he were playing the position like Moll or Colledge from the past, there might be more urgency to get Cliffy back out there.
last thing I saw on Cliffy made it sound pretty improbable that he'd be back before the end of the season. at this point I think they're just hoping he can provide backup during the playoffs?

Newhouse is improving a lot, especially in pass protection, but when Cliffy was in there we were able to run to the left with Clifton and Lang. We aren't able to run left now at all, and you wonder if it's due to Newhouse or that the Newhouse-Lang combo isn't as good as Clifton-Lang.
Yeah, I'm not sure where that comes from. If anything, Newhouse is an improvement over Cliffy in the run game. Cliffy earned his paychecks for a decade by being one of the best pass-blocking LTs in the game. He was never known for his run blocking, and if anything replacing pillow-soft Colledge with Lang has improved the push on that side of the line. The reason they tend to run right is because they have two mules in Sitton and Bulaga over there.
