Favre says he thought Rodgers' success would have come sooner

In an interview Tuesday with an Atlanta radio station, former Packers quarterback Brett Favre said he was not surprised Aaron Rodgers led the Packers to a Super Bowl title last year. In fact, Favre said he was surprised Rodgers didn't do it sooner than last season.

Favre made his remarks to WQXI-AM (790) on Tuesday. Favre also talked about his life in retirement and if he had any regrets about returning to play for the Minnesota Vikings.

Favre was interviewed by Mike Morgan, who worked with Favre on the Southern Miss-Rice telecast on regional TV on Saturday. Morgan has a talk show on WQXI, the flagship station of the Atlanta Falcons. The Packers play at Atlanta on Sunday night.

"I’m going to be honest, I was not surprised," Favre said, referring to watching Rodgers and the Packers fashion a championship season.

Favre said his last year in Green Bay lived up his contention that it was the most talented team he had ever played on.

"We came close, and I think we took a lot of people by surprise, but guys emerged rather quickly," Favre said. "Aaron had a chance . . .even though the last couple years it’s seemed like he’s almost a rookie, he’s been around awhile. And I’d like to think that he watched, he learned, and then when he got a chance to play, he brought in his ability which is obviously very good or they wouldn’t have drafted him in the first round.

"He’s got tremendous talent, he’s very bright and he got a chance to watch and see successful teams do it right," Favre said. "And so he just kind of fell into a good situation. On top of that, he’s a good player. I don’t think there’s any pressure on him now, the talent around him is even better than when I was there. So I’m really kind of surprised it took him so long. In the early part of last year's season, it hadn’t quite clicked yet and I didn’t know it would. I just kind of figured when they hit their stride, they’re going to be hard to beat. And that’s what happened.”

Favre was asked if he was disappointed he was only able to win one Super Bowl in his career.

“Yeah we came close several times after (1996 season), went to the Super Bowl the following year," Favre said. "You know, it is hard to repeat, but then again it’s not. A lot of factors have to play into it. Obviously health from an overall team standpoint is important, the nucleus of the team coming back is important - did you lose a lot of guys? - and I think most importantly, do you still with the same passion and hunger that you did prior to winning the Super Bowl. If you have those in place, you have a pretty good shot. So it was disappointing to never go back aside from that following year, although we were close."

Webster's Left Handed Compliment: A backhanded compliment or '''''' is an insult that is disguised as a compliment. Sometimes, a backhanded compliment may be inadvertent. However, the term usually connotes an intent to belittle or condescend

I still hated the guy, but things had thawed a little bit since his embarrassment in Minnesota and retirement. After reading that, I'm right back to where I was in 2009-2010 (After reverting to 2008 levels of hatred). What a classless POS this guy is. I wonder if he cried his little eyes out when the Packers won the Super Bowl.

I have always contended that after the 1st Super Bowl win, Favre enjoyed the climb of the mountain much more than reaching the summit, which would explain the numerous boneheaded throws in critical situations.

Favre's actions after the Super Bowl win were "This is it?!?!" as if it was too easy.

What a fool. What a complete fool.

C'mon Aaron! Let's win at least one more so you can take your rightful place next to Bart in Packer history. Keep destroying Favre's team records too.

No doubt in my mind

My thoughts exactly. As time has passed I've grown apathetic to what he did and where he went. It does make me feel good that it's just gnawing at him that the Packers are so good now and that TT made the right decision.

Favre had all of that young talent at his disposal his last year and pissed it all away with one boneheaded pass.
LoL, it's like some people try to be offended. They asked him some questions, he gave his meandering answer and people try to disect it in to a controversy. There are two people who are actually utterly and completely sick of Favre/Rodgers questions: Favre and Rodgers. Thousands more claim they are then complain about them everywhere every single time driving up mentions and page hits. The only way it goes away is if people stop talking about it.

Understand as well that by saying that, he's also taking a veiled...well, not so veiled swipe at Rodgers.

Because he also said Rodgers has better talent then he had, you know talent he "fell into" Roll Eyes, so if he doesn't win another SB that's a failure of Rodgers.

Just a complete pompous ass-hole. Period.

Didn't he say this practically every year anyway? Hell, didn't he say this in Minnesota to?
I'm with Herschel. Favre is right. Rodgers should have won his Super Bowl sooner than 2010. Would have won in 2007, but some bonehead decided to throw a pick to the only receiver who was covered.

I thought winning a Super Bowl was impossible without Moss and Mooch.
Dead to me. Irrelevant. I hope they ask Tommy Kramer what he thinks next, since we're suddenly interested in what dickhead ex-Queenie QB's have to say about the GBP. I'll wait to see what Steve Dils has to say first.

so he just kind of fell into a good situation

Looks like TT and Aaron have something in common: great situations just fall into their lap.

Favre's just happy anyone talks to him now. You know damn well he's sitting around watching Aaron own the league and it's KILLING HIM.

I actually don't find all of this as an insult. I personally think he was trying to give a compliment but failed toward the end.

In all honesty, Rodgers did fall into a good situation. How many 1st round QBs get to sit for a couple of years to learn how to play football at a professional level? Most get thrown in right away, get beat up, lose their confidence, and end up being backups the rest of their life. I can think of only a couple 1st rounders that are playing now that started right away (Matty Ice, Manning,) I'm sure there are others.

2nd Favre did say that Rodgers is a good player.

I think their is a small amount of pressure on Rodgers to repeat, but most of pressure was removed last year when he won the Super Bowl and was the MVP.

All that being said it is still insulting to say "I'm really surprised it took him so long" So that makes the rest of what he said insulting as well.

So, in my opinion I think he was "trying" to give a compliment, but he ends up talking too long, and then makes a fool of himself. Sooner or later he will learn to not answer any questions again. Ever!!

Yeah I read the piece and thought he was just rambling on and gave some compliments. I still love Favre though, so I don't read everything like some psycho ex or however you guys see this.

Call it whatever you want, I call it good memories of watching football with my family in the 90s and 2000s. Where's my soap bucket?

This thread title is hilarious in itself. Do you guys work for the Druge Report? Favre says Rodgers SHOULD have won earlier!

Lol
I gotta believe seeing Thompson, McCarthy, and Rodgers winning the Super Bowl just a couple years after he left had to hurt him deep inside. He purposely tried to screw all 3 of those guys in 2008. He continued his little vendetta against them all through last year, and eventually they all triumphed and Favre lost his little war with them. That's got to suck for him.

I don't hate Favre, but something tells me that for all the bad stuff that has come out about him in these past couple years, there probably was ALOT more bad stuff that was kept a secret.

One of these days, the unauthorized bio on Favre is going to come out sort of like what has come out on Walter Payton, and man that will be a pretty interesting read once it does.
I just feel for those at 1265 Lombardi Ave who think just maybe things are quieting down and they can finally think of holding his damn retirement ceremony, retire the jersey, and let him know not to the let the door hit his arrogant ass on the way out.

This was 8 months ago:

quote:
Though it may not have the same effect as Adrian’s post-coma, one-word plea to Rocky, former Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre had a message for current Bears defensive end Julius Peppers on Monday night.

Beat the Packers.

“I talked to him after the game,” Peppers tells Michael Wilbon of ESPNChicago.com (via Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune). “I told him it was an honor to play against him. He said, ‘Likewise. . . . Go beat the Packers in a couple of weeks.’”

Now 8 months later. More verbal diarrhea.

In X time...we'll see a book. More diarrhea.

Unfortunately, I don't think he'll ever just STFU.

Actually, I don't know that Favre could have verbal diarrhea. If you heard any of his "color commentary" in the So. Miss-Rice game, he can't talk fast enough to fulfill any definition of diarrhea. Listening to him was more like verbal constipation... Big Grin

It's funny. I'm not 100% sure that's accurate. I believe he morphed into what he is now but was genuine, early in his career. I think around 2000 or so once Sherman enabled him, is when he became a douche

And yet you show up just to comment on this thread? Yes, psycho indeed.

What? I want proof that anyone wanted TT and MM fired.
All I can think is that Favre saw how much attention Joe Namath was getting for talking out of his butt, so Brett decided to out crazy the old man.

Honestly, I think this ramble (of which Favre has had too many to count) shows both an effort to be conciliatory and an inability to completely suppress his hurt feelings. The problem is that when Favre opens his mouth in front of a microphone, it's like he has no control over what comes out. He stutters. He stumbles. He loses track of what he was saying. He abandons any internal filter. He contradicts himself. He says nonsense, realizes he just said nonsense, and then tries to talk his way out of it - but fails. He asks himself questions, and then gives vague answers.

It's always painful to watch, and it usually gets him in trouble. I've never seen anything like it. It's mesmerized me since the early 90s.
I think Boxedup nails it. He's trying to compliment (in order to try to put this behind him)....but his hurt feelings just get in the way. And he can't admit that Green Bay did the right thing.
not to dredge up the whole old story, but he initially did the right thing too... when he retired in 2008. TT just followed thru on what brett couldn't and brett held it against him. (insert pun here)
What a tool, but he's right. He should've won it earlier when Rodgers replaced him in the second half of the NCCCG vs. the Giants, he would've lit them up then followed that with the Patriots getting whupped...
