Why they lost the game: first and goal from the one twice and came away with zero points.
That replay makes it look even worse. Ferguson was 5 yards clear on his guy and the PSU safety that made the Interception had no chance to turn his hips and make a play (unless you are Giannis).
So Mertz line drives it?
Is that announcer a Penn State alum? JFC

And Mertz mishandled the ball both times. He's been at Wisonsin for three summers. He's not a rookie.
@Goalline. It's one thing to jump on negativity when it happens in the 1st quarter and it's just one play.
Entirely another when it's pointing out consistent suckage that ultimately costs a win.
Got it?
This is why you shouldn't have taken that timeout when you did.
Mertz is terrible.
Mertz lost this game 4 times.
Anybody optimistic here?
So, anyone gonna be watching Norte Dame and their new QB tomorrow???
Fitting end to the game. PSU has a very good defense but overall a really poor performance from Mertz.
Any flights to KC available?
Given how inconsistent the pass defense was in the second half and how terrible Mertz was overall thereβs a lot of reason to be concerned for the Badgers this year.
Chryst has a tough decision to make regarding Mertz. For all the hype heβs been a huge disappointment and people should be ticked. He should not be playing this awful. They may need to make a QB change at some point.
Overall, itβs somewhat predictable with this team. Go into the season highly regarded and it rarely works out. We have 20 years of history to back it up.
The season isnβt lost but clearly they arenβt as good as 12 in the country.

This should be a lesson to all of us who for years have complained that the QB play has held them back. If you just had a guy with NFL arm, they'd be a national title contender.
Well, now they have a guy with NFL athleticism, but he seems to lack the football smarts and poise that is even more important. Coan, Samuel, Bollinger, Bevell, Tolzein, Houston, and even Hornibrook win this game today. Mertz' arm gives you a better chance against OSU, but that doesn't matter if you don't play Badger fundamental football and win games that a game manager QB can win.
Mertz will probably look really good in some blowouts, but then choke in the bigger moments.
All hype, no heart.

Bullshit, you jump on negativity no matter when it happens and you make it your mission.

Me!π
No doubt. I was excited about Mertz. Has all of the physical tools but sure seems to wilt under the pressure. Heβs about as unclutch a QB in Madison in some time.
Turning the ball over twice the way he did cannot happen. Ever.
Maybe, just maybe the light bulb is will go on at some point. If not, itβs a huge swing and miss for the Badgers.

Love to be sharing a bowl of popcorn with Paul Chryst and watching it

Iβm so sorry. Mertz is awesome.
Better?
Real question is how long they stick with him. Who's the backup? We finally get a highly touted QB and he looks to be an underachiever (not negative, honest). I miss the no name overachievers that we had grown accustomed to.

Fred and Ethel yesβ¦Graham? Not ready for prime time. Yet.
Whenβs the Hollandaise Bowl?

I donβt give a shit about Mertz. This is about you jumping down guys throats for negative comments during Packers, Bucks, Brewers, previous Badgers games only to hit your own threshold on negativity.
Itβs OK to post positive or negative stuff. This stuff isnβt supernatural. Or personal. But at least keep it real. If you donβt and are just reacting real time honestly who gives a shit unless you are Jaymo or some other trolling tool.
Mertz might be a great kid. I hope he does well. But the facts are the facts. Since that Illinois game, heβs been mediocre at best and he was horrific today. He was exhibit 1A why they lost.
For all the credit Jimmy L gets he needs to explain himself as well. That was some shit pass defense in the second half. Nelson and Faion Hicks were awful. Was it scheme or execution?
Maybe that they opened against a legit opponent instead of some cupcakes didnβt let them get some real reps under their belts like most years?
I dunno, but it was really hard to watch.

I agree.
Iβm sure Indiana was wishing they didnβt open against Iowa but like Indy I donβt think Wisconsin had much of a choice.
The bottom line is this - had Mertz not screwed the pooch today itβs likely they win by 2 scores.
More box wine and spliffs for everyone!
So, legit question. I watched up to the 3rd quarter when it was still 7-7 then my internet took a shit.
Is that secondary all freshmen?
The Badgers secondary is basically juniors and seniors.
Canβt speak for Penn State, but their corners and safeties looked 1000x better than UW
That Penn State #1 was by far the best player on the field today. He would look really good in Green n Gold.
Listen, I'm the biggest asshole on this board and don't forget it.
Noogies will happen.
@ Thankgiving?
And you're a school teacher who spends a good portion of the school day posting stupid plagiarized shit at a football website.
Yeah, I'm a dick.

Ask BK

The guy was laying on the field at least 5 times today and caused the game to last almost 4 hours
