Corey Hart was a god-send last year at 1st, he is a natural 1st baseman ... and a damn good one.

A natural 1rst basemen, even a good one, isn't going to be a better defender than a short stop, even a bad one.

In 2012 Hart had a UZR/150 of -13.2 at 1rst base.. So far, in a limited sample, Yuni has a -9.2.. I'm not a big believer in D metrics, but it's all you can cite besides personal opinion when debating defense.
defensive metrics with small samples are even worse. First base is tough simply because if a guy digs a throw out of the dirt it is an out, if he misses it, the error is on the guy who made the throw. What impressed me about Hart, was not just that he got the ball hit to him, but he caught about everything thrown his way. I always thought that is what made Pujols such a good first basemen, he gobbled up every throw that was close.

I'm not sure Yuni even demonstrates more range than Hart. If healthy, I would certainly never bring Yuni in as a defensive replacement for Hart either.

Good point.

I did mention in a previous post that the one advantage Hart has is lenght.. As far as picking the ball, I have to believe that Yuni has softer hands.. You don't get to play SS in the MLB with bad hands.

Ah yeah ... if you do not understand what you are watching then yeah go off the stats.

There is a world of difference playing SS then 1st base, just because Segura is the new Wizard of OZ at SS ... he'd be about 6th guy I'd put at first.
And if you are talkin Weeks, who "would have soft hands because he is a 2nd baseman", He'd be the very last guy on the roster including probably most pitchers I'd put at first for defense.

But thats just me, I'm crazy that way.

Yes, that world of difference is that it requires much more skill. Typically, you hide your worst defenders at 1rst base.. You know, the Prince Fielders and Big Pappi's of the world..

But keep throwing out weak insults while trying to support your position. It's a sure fire way to win a losing argument.
Good teams do not hide their worst defender at first ... WTF, you think this is little league?

Some of the best big(fat) men have been great first basemen that made your sure-handed guys look acceptable.

The Crew use to have that very guy, George Scott ... big tub of lard but he was quick and could scoop with anybody in his day. I believe he saved the beloved Robin Yount a few errors when the Kid was going thru puberty in Milwaukee.

The Boomer was quite the scooper, he was my guy in those days.....in fact I named my pup after him. He also was a true slugger, if I recall correctly he coined the term " tater", long time ago so I may be wrong on this.
If you look at Ax's game log, after the horrific start and yesterday, he has been quite sharp. Although that HR was crushed, the other hits were cheapies for sure. He has made mechanical adjustments and they have seemed to have worked. No way should he be released.

That being said, I would prefer RR play to match-ups instead of the set in stone "8th inning guy." Not sure if that would have meant a lefty yesterday or not.
