Gomez is having a down year but is a legitimate 5+ WAR player and figures to be that over the rest of this year plus next year.  According to fangraph's numbers, there were only 25 hitters in the majors last year with a 5.0 WAR or better.  Gomez is an elite player.  His 2014 WAR was 5.7, 10th best in the majors.  This is not a rental, he is under contract for next year at a bargain price.  If Met fans don't think he's worth Wheeler and Flores then they are morons.  Plain and simple.

I can't figure out what makes Flores an attractive player?  Fangraphs has him as a 1.0 WAR player but that's almost all based on his plus UZR/150 numbers.  But when looking at his DRS (which I consider to be the best measure of defense), he is a 0 at 2B and a -5 at shortstop.  That would grade him as a minus defender with a .281 OBP.  Sounds like frickin' Betancourt.  It's pretty obvious that Flores would play 3B for the Brewers, in 2013 he played just over 200 innings for the Mets at third and had a +13.4 UZR/150 but was a -2 DRS.

He has hit 10 home runs this year and definitely could be a 25+ home run guy, especially when playing half his games at Miller Park.  Typcial Melvin, a guy that can hit the long ball but can't do anything else.  Flores, Segura, Gennett and Davis all in the same lineup.

I realize that Wheeler is out until mid 2016 but with him, Peralta, Nelson and Jungmann (and Garza because of the large contract)...it sure looks like Fiers should be dealt.  The Brewers have a whole bunch of back-end-of-the-rotation candidates to cover things until Wheeler is healthy (Cravy, Wagner, Lopez) and they don't figure to be competitive so now appears to be the time to move Fiers.

Maybe the same with Segura.  It's hard to see them moving forward with the OBPs of Flores, Segura and Gennett all in the same lineup.  Seems like the Brewers have played their hand, Segura is going to be moved and Arcia is next year's opening day shortstop.

Looking at comments today and it sure sounds like Melvin was going to trade Gomez for Wheeler and Flores.  Attanasio should have dumped Melvin after the draft and let Montgomery run the show until the off-season.  The upcoming deadline is an important time for this rebuild and so far it's not looking very good.

It's hard to believe Gomez has any type of significant hip issue.  He's only missed one game this month (way back on July 5) and has slashed a respectable .237/.363/.421/.784.

well, screw the Mets

Hmmm.  That sounds like they had the Gomez/Wheeler/Flores deal worked out and then the Mets tried to pull the bait and switch and either tried to get the Brewers to eat a bunch of money or throw in a comp pick as well.  Melvin said forget it, and the Mets made up an excuse to back out of the deal.

Big thumbs up to Doug Melvin if that's what happened.

Totally agree for the right return.  Like every player on this team, they should be actively listening to any and every offer to get younger cheaper players in the goal of rebuilding this franchise similarly to how Houston and the Cubs built.

This does nothing to help Gomez' attitude

What attitude is that?  He's been a solid, fun, and above average player for the Brewers since joining the organization.  Seriously curious to understand what you are implying here?

let alone the disruption this can create in the clubhouse.

Again, what indication whatsoever do you have that would lead you to this conclusion?  Was it the photo of his teammates wishing him well on the plane when we was traded?  Was it the words from teammates this morning highlighting he's a great person and teammate?

You're manufacturing an issue that doesn't exist.  He should be traded, as should many many other players on this roster.  Not because he's an issue, he's not.  But because, they need to rebuild.
