I see our four best LB's as Matthews, Hawk, Barnett and Chillar. Brad Jones may come on on the outside, J. Thompson a question mark, and Poppinga serviceable. Bishop provides excellent ILB depth. Kampman in limbo. Bottom line, do you see Chillar as a good fit at LOLB, and if not, why not?

I agree. Chillar is the starter, not Jones. Jones with 7th round salary is the depth.

I agree that Chillar would have replaced Kampman had he been healthy at the time but I think the Packers like what they see in Jones.

Chillar was primarily playing inside instead of Hawk in all packages except the base so I still see Hawk as the odd man out.
Decent move to keep the current defense in tact. I have no problem with Ted re-signing our guys. I have a problem with him leaving millions on the cap each year when it could be used up front to shore up key needs on the team (see OL).

But, good move to keep Chillar in the fold. He gives the dimension of pass coverage that the linebacking corps needs. Why the Hawk hate? To me, it seems that AJ has played very, very well of late.
I agree that Chillar very well could be the starting OLB opposite Matthews and he does have the versatility to play all the LB position.

I also agree with Hank about Collins he needs to be extended but if he wants to be the highest paid safety in the NFL then TT will have to go the restricted route or franchised whatever the situation requires.

GB has to keep one of the two for sure between Pickett and Jolly but hopefully both
Apparently Ted liked what he saw yesterday when the "Dominator" unveiled the Psycho Wink

Seriously, our 3-4 LB's are a big strength right now(much to slayers dismay)and it looks like Ted wants to keep it that way. This defensive scheme has given Barnett and Hawk new life, Thompson struck gold and silver with Matthews and Jones .... and Chillar is a very versatile LB to have on board. Was sad every time I'd read that the Pack wouldn't be able to keep him after this year, so I'm thrilled with this signing. Still regret that the Packers didn't move Kampman before the season started ... who knows, maybe they tried.

It sounded like Chillar had Capers heavy endorsment from the start and I'm guessing his input played heavily into this. Chillar is a player.
The Packers usually always take the cap room they have and give players "bonuses" that end up not likely earned.. and they are rolled into the next years cap as a "credit". It's stupid fuzzy math, because the Packers never end up using a good majority of it each year. So while, in theory it looks nice because you have an extra amount to play with the next year.. Tightwad Ted will never pull the trigger and make the move that could put the team over the hump.

from 2008- "The Packers have a little more than $32 million in cap room, second-most in the NFL. Only the Kansas City Chiefs, with $36 million, have more."

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/has...ve-the-cap-room.html

They have 15.628M in cap room, a little less now because of the Chillar extension. But with an uncapped year next season. It matters none. That is why players are mad in house. My beef is, use it to improve the team prior to the damn year starting. They had a lot of holes in this team. They could have filled at least one or two.

As for 2007/2006 - im sure it's very similiar to 2008. If you want to do the research, go nuts. It's the same old cheapskatin rebuilding story each year.

For the off season prior to this year...

Which holes?
Filled with who?
At what price?
How long of a contract?

I wouldn't think the response should take longer than a couple of minutes, what with all the enormous talent that could have filled the holes on this team!

I'll hang up and listen for your answer.
Little update from Milwaukee Radio: Gary Ellerson, LeRoy Butler, and Gilbert Brown.

LeRoy Butler thinks the Packers are going to win out this season and be 12-4. Gilbert Brown didnt seem to care where the Packers would end up, he was more concerned about talking about eating and laying down to fart. Rob Demovsky thinks the Packers will drop the game against AZ and maybe Pittsburgh leaving them at 11-5 or 10-6. Either way, probably playing Philadelphia or AZ in round 1 which present significant matchup problems for us. Demovsky would rather match up against Philadelphia because he doesnt want to see our secondary have to try and cover AZ's receivers. He also seemed to think that we wouldnt match up at all against NO in the superdome.

I find listening to these old players fascinating, they definitely love their packers still.

I think what really happens is by extending Chillar during the 2009 season the signing bonus of his 4 year deal is actually spread over 5 years including 2009. That is why part of our surplus is being used on this contract. But you could be right in that other creative things are being done to add more of the hit to 2009 but no player/agentis going to agree to a bonus that he's not likely to earn.

Well, since the experts have spoke, and since it's quote obvious we have no shot to win the in the playoffs, might as well pack it up and go home. No point even wasting the travel money to go to the game. Oh well, it was a nice season for a while!

Sincerely,
2008 Arizona Cardinals

And 2007 NY Giants, and the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers, and the 2001 Patriots...could go on

OK, name me a guy they could have signed with all that money? Are they better than GB reserving money for a Pickett or Collins? Clifton? Heck, a banged up Kampy?

Next question.............

Sounds like fun. The whole price/length of deal is less important than the holes for this conversation. Pick any one or even two of these players.

Jason Brown / C / STL (UFA)
Matt Birk / C - from Minnesota - to Balt. (UFA) (Center upgrade)
Albert Haynesworth / DT from TN to Was (UFA) (upgrade over Pickett)
Brian Dawkins S from PHI to Den (UFA) (liability Bigby)
Derrick Dockery OG (UFA)

Personally I would have focused on Jason Brown/Dockery combo. I like Haynesworth, but after drafting Raji.. there was no need to go in that direction. Although, it would have been really nice to have that kind of impact talent come in here. He is one of the top players in the NFL.

Dawkins would have been nice at safety. Bigby cant cover anyone. He will be a liability in the playoffs.

Birk is not as good as Brown, but is better than what we have.

Ok Thompsonites, let me know why we keep 15-30M in cap room every year to play the roll the cap room over again for next year game if we never ever use it anyhow? Thompson is habitually rebuilding.

Diggr...you sound kinda dum here....Not to just cherry pick ... to be fair your whole post is full of stupid....but this especially caught my eye.

You realize free agency is before the draft....then again maybe not.

You also realize the huge impact Haynesworth has had on the 4-9 redskins.

Snyderbrenner had a deal in place for him at 1201 am and was not going to be outbid.

He was never an option and in hindsight thank goodness. Also thank goodness we did not get more seriously involved in the Chris Canty sweepstakes. Some of our best deals are the ones we did not make.

I used to think most of your act was schtick.....now when I read your posts I feel dumber and want to say a prayer for you.
