Seems like Strickland could stick... he played while Chryst was running the O. Seemed to be a popular guy as a recruiter, too.

The main thing is they must land better QB talent. Stocco was a success story that probably is most owed to Chryst. Tolzien as well. They don't need 5 star guys- just guys like that and we're in business.

And keep the D the way they are. Love the attacking 3-4 style, but they need horses up front badly. if they can get some big boys and some depth there, they'll continue to dram the playmaking LB talent that's making this defense really good.

Aranda staying with Chryst taking over for Anderson makes me feel a lot better than had GA stayed. If Bostad comes back with Rudolph and Strickland it's IMO a big net positive.

...assuming they can recruit, of course.

I think they can recruit just fine if those guys mentioned are in the mix.  Chryst got a lot mileage out of 3 star receivers and TEs and QBs and what good RB or OL wouldn't want to come to UW?

We also need to remember it's not like the D was littered with superstar recruits either.   The DL in particular was not very good the last couple of years but I suspect that will change and if Aranda gets a few more horses I like our chances

Recruits coming in, GA's guys seem to be staying (I expect we will lose someone, but so far I am a little surprised).

Sounds like Jay Norvell, a Madison native recently fired by Oklahoma, will be the Badger's new WR coach.  This would be an excellent pickup for Bucky, one of the best WR coaches out there and a solid recruiter for the Texas/Oklahoma area.

Also in the papers this morning, Inoke Breckterfield will be the defensive line coach (was the DT coach at Pitt) and Thomas Brown will stay as the running back coach.  The Brown story is a bit surprising as most of the reports had John Settle penciled in for that spot.

Matt House, Chyrst's defensive coordinator at Pitt, had been heavily rumored to be joining the Badger's staff as a position coach.  Now it appears he won't be part of the staff at all.  Another member of Chyrst's staff at Pitt, Chris Haering, probably will be on the Badger's staff, most likely as a linebacker coach.  Haering was the outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Pitt.

Lots of names being thrown around for the defensive secondary.  Bill Busch, Ben Strickland, Troy Douglas (from Pitt) are all being mentioned, and even Jim Leonhard's name has been thrown in the mix as he just retired from the NFL and was spotted at a Badger basketball game.  I would be surprised if Leonhard got a position coach job, but would love to see the Badger's bring him back as an assistant.

Former Badger Ross Kolodziej will likely be the strength and conditioning coach.

The Journal-Sentinel are reporting these names:

Running Backs - Thomas Brown

Wide Receivers - Jay Norvell

Tight Ends - Mickey Turner

Defensive Line - Inoke Breckterfield

Outside Linebacker - Chris Haering

Secondary - Daronte Jones

And they note that Ben Strickland could be added as an assistant secondary coach.

I'm wondering if a quarterback coach will be added?  For most college teams the offensive coordinator is also the quarterback coach, but that is not happening here since Rudolph is handling the offensive line.  Either they'll add a quarterback coach or Chyrst will do that as well.

I'd guess Chris Haering will probably be named the speical teams coordinator as he was the outside linebacker coach/special teams coordinator at Pittsburgh.  The Badgers could also split up those duties as well (as was the case when Barry took special teams responsibility away from Bielema).

I'm a bit disappointed that Bill Busch doesn't appear to be returning, although the safety position had some significant problems last year.  A part of that was losing five safety candidates between the end of season and the beginning of this season (Hammon, Hubley, Williams, Johnson, Jackson).  Overall I think he did a decent enough job with a really shorthanded group, and he appeared to be a strong recruiter, although Jay Norvell should fill Busch's shoes nicely in the recruiting area.  Daronte Jones resume looks pretty good, and I'm excited to have him on board.

These have been where the reported hires (and maybe hired with Strickland) have recruited in the past:

-Chyrst - national QB recruiter

-Rudolph - southern Ohio/western Pennsylvania

-Aranda - southern Florida/California

-Brown - New Jersey/Georgia/national RB recruiter

-Norvell - Texas/Oklahoma

-Turner - ?

-Breckterfield - Florida

-Haering - Pennsylvania

-Jones - Louisiana/Hawaii

-Strickland - Wisconsin/Minnesota

The big omission is Illinois/Missouri which IMO is a key area for Wisconsin.  The St. Louis/East St. Louis area was a real honeyhole during the Alvarez area.  Jones will obviously be out of Hawaii so maybe he'll get the Illinois/Missouri area?  I believe this is Mickey Turner's first position coach job.  Maybe Turner will get part of Illinois and Jones will get the St. Louis area and try to keep an already established presence in Louisiana.

In hiring Dave Aranda as his defensive coordinator and Joe Rudolph as his offensive coordinator, Chryst put checkmarks in all of the boxes: good people, good at their job, good fit.

Additionally, Aranda will coach the linebackers and Rudolph will coach the offensive line.

“One of the things is that you feel like you’ve got great fits -- philosophically—with Dave and Joe,” he said. “And you have two guys that you look forward to being able to do this (coach) with.

UW has three more openings. Former UW assistant Jay Norvell is expected to coach wide receivers. Daronte Jones, the secondary coach at Hawaii for the last three seasons, is set to coach UW's secondary. According to a UW source, Chryst has tabbed Tim Tibesar to coach outside linebackers. Tibesar, 42, was the Chicago Bears' linebackers coach for the last two seasons and Purdue's defensive coordinator in 2012.

That means Chryst is not retaining safeties coach Bill Busch or cornerbacks coach Ben Strickland.

Rumor is Strickland was given an offer to stay at UW, but not as an assistant coach.

The Badgers also lost a recruit on Wednesday, defensive back T.J. Griffin.  Right now he is uncommitted by it's speculated that he will follow Chris Beatty to Virginia (Beatty is now Virginia's running back coach).  Oregon has also been pursuing him recently.  This is the first (and will maybe be the only) departure that can be attributed to the coaching change.

Wisconsin should take a beating in the press if what Madden's father is saying is true.

I found an old article on Madden.  It pretty well describes some of the issues he's had to deal with in the past.

I'm all for keeping high academic standards and would rather see "non-students" go elsewhere regardless of what they bring to the football field.  But along with that there are exceptions when a young man has some legitimate problems to overcome.  It sounds like Madden had some serious grade issues early in his high school career and he has made a real effort to clean that up.  If there was ever a time when the admissions department should have granted an exemption, this appears to be it (provided the Big 10 clears him).

Brown Deer quarterback Zack Baun, who already had a greyshirt offer from Wisconsin, has just been bumped up to a full scholarship offer.  He is being recruited as an outside linebacker for Wisconsin.  If he is a Division I player remains to be seen.  As far as I know he only had one other full offer, and that was from South Dakota State.

I wonder if another Big 10 school did step up and make him an offer.  Seems a bit early for the Badgers to go into "settle" mode with their remaining scholarships.

The Badgers also offered Fond Du Lac defensive end Robert Windsor yesterday.  A real interesting prospect IMO.  Late bloomer, wasn't being looked at much early in the year but eventually got offers from Illinois, Purdue, Maryland and Penn State.  It was thought that he'd probably be headed to Penn State unless Wisconsin offered him.  Now it looks like he will have a decision to make.
