It's all about what the talking heads feed America. All year it was Ravens, Jackson, Ravens, Jackson. Same thing with Leroy. Atwater got all the press for his big hits. Leroy was only mentioned when the Packers were on a National game. Same thing with Matt. "Oh a first year coach has his team in the NFC title game? I didn't realize that!"

From a Saints article....MLF got 3 votes....Sean Payton got 1.                                   "how can LaFleur command as many votes as Payton and Tomlin combined, when his players have publicly lamented how unprepared they were for the NFC Championship Game? It’s outrageous that voters dropped the ball this badly."

Yes.

Who was it??

I believe Barry Switzer.

I believe Switzer inherited a 2x super bowl team. In addition he had been a long time head coach at Oklahoma.

MLF had never been a head coach anywhere and inherited a 6-9-1 team.

Switzer won the Super Bowl his 2nd year as HC. I was incorrect a couple weeks ago. I think those players won in spite of Switzer. That's how good they were.

MLF hasn't been a HC at any level until Green Bay. AFAIK. Packers were definitely ahead of the curve this year. Hopefully Gutey gets a couple more FA's & a solid draft in Vegas this year.

Jesus fuc.q.  I'm not saying Switzer was a good coach or comparing him in any way to LaFluffer.  The question was asked if a first year HC (I took that to mean NFL HC) had ever taken his team to the NFCCG.  The answer is yes.  Barry Switzer did it.

Don McCafferty (won SB)
Red Miller (made the SB)
George Seifert (won SB)
Barry Switzer
Steve Mariucci
Bill Callahan
Sean Payton
John Harbaugh
Rex Ryan
Jim Caldwell (made the SB)
Jim Harbaugh
Matt Lafleur

Gary Kubiak and Chuck Knox also made the Conf Championship Game their first year as HC for a team but had previous HC experience.

Next question.

Jim Harbaugh had the best ever rookie season in my opinion.     He had a 13 win regular season after taking over a 6-10 team.    They lost in the NFC Championship to the Giants 17-20.  He accomplished that with Alex Smith as his QB.

You can see the other 1st year coaches with 13 or 14 regular season wins in that thread.

I thought COY was a regular season award?

You're right...my bad. When does the actual voting take place, though? Before any playoff games have been played?

In my mind, there were several coaches who deserved consideration this year.
MLF was as deserving as any; my guess is that our "ugly" season (wrongly) counted against him.

Harbaugh had a good year in Baltimore transitioning from Flacco.
Shanahan did well in SF.
Ditto for Reid.
Peyton did wonders in NO. Going 5-0 in Brees' absence was outstanding.
McDermott in Buffalo.

Oh well, maybe next year...
