I think Trestman has them going in the right direction, and in the game against us he took the pressure off Cutler by making him a game manager instead of a savior. I think if Trestman continues to do that and Forte continues his good production AND they find some defensive help, they can do fairly well. But if the game comes down to Cutler as the difference, then they will do no better than this year. And those are a lot of IFs.
Amazing, just amazing. I can imagine it's for ~$15m a year. Just incredible when you look at his stats and see his career QB rating is 84.6 with a high of 89.2 (this year)........average. His career record as a starter is 56-48 which is the equivalent of 8.6 wins per year..........average. And even if you look past that, he's not the guy you want leading your team due to his poor attitude.
His stats scream average starter; his career record screams journeyman; but for whatever reason, the NFL views him as a franchise QB. I just don't get it. What do teams keep seeing in this guy? That said, I'm all for it. Cutler can't beat the Packers so we have another 7 years to even up the Bear-Packers head to head record.
We have to remember too that Cutler was under very little pressure last week. So part of his lack of dum was no CMIII and very little pressure up front.
I have FULL confidence that jail break the DL and he will slide right back to his INT ways and presents will be floating left and right for the Packers DB's.

He played pretty well this year under Trestman and good QBs are hard to find. As Buddy Nix alluded to: As a GM the difference between being an idiot and a genius is finding a franchise QB.
Cutler is the only thing holding that team back at this point. The thought had been that Cutler could take this team to a SB if he had better WRs and a competent OLine. Well now he has a good stable of WRs and a competent OLine and he is still throwing game losing INTs.

It's great because Cutler is too much damn fun to make fun of, though this was the right move by Chicago
Bears actually have a ton of talent on offense now and Trestman did a great job with calling the plays. Cutler was having some of his best stats this year under Trestman and their offense averaged 28 PPG when Cutler was playing. I see why Chicago is going all in here. Want to see how Cutler does with these weapons under a guy who actually knows how to run an offense.
Bears have one of the better cap situations so I'd expect them to be active in FA for some defensive help.

If Cutler is getting that kind of contract guess what Russell Wilson and Kaperdick are thinking?

He is so over rated.. 13th in the NFL for QBR amoung starters this season with an improved o-line, pair of great WR and a strong RB.

They will need to add more than 1 defensive free agent. Re-signing Jennings was a good start, but they have several starters that are free agents including Henry Melton, Charles Tillman, Major Wright, Corey Wooten, DJ Williams, James Anderson, and Zack Bowman. And they have Julius Peppers cap figure being a little over 18 million, which is what Cutler's is supposed to be...1/4 of their cap tied up in 2 players. Nope, Peppers is going to get the axe which means Bobby BuShea McClellin will be their primary pass rusher and they may lose one of their top 2 interior DL (Melton and Wooten). So no their D isn't going to be fixed with 1 good FA addition.
Who knows if in today's NFL at today's prices if this is a good move. What else were the Bears to do? Play JM? He is old and in all reality a backup. Draft a QB who they can be assured will be better than Jay right away? Good luck with that. Free agent? Who?
Their mistake was getting Cutler in the first place, they could either keep him and hope for the best the next couple of yrs or let him go and start over.
Did they overpay? Probably but unfortunatly for them that's the name of the game.

Here's the thing I love about Emery. When he sees a problem or deficiency, he attacks it via multiple angles. He doesn't just sign one FA, he drafts the position as well.
I think the Trestman/Emery duo are going to have a fantastic run in Chicago.

I think they should have let Cutler walk and started fresh with a rookie QB. Cutler already has his habits established both good and bad. Trestman will be able to make what Cutler does well the focal point of the offense, but he will never be able to break those bad habits that make Jay Cutler so uniquely frustrating. Trestman wants a QB who will efficiently run his system, will protect the ball, but can challenge the defense vertically occasionally. If Trestman gets the players to run HIS system the way he wants it then I think he could have a dominant offense like Mike McCarthy, but Cutler will always do things the Jay Cutler way first. That's why Denver was willing to move on. The Bears would have been better off letting Cutler walk, trading back in the draft, rebuilding the D, and taking a QB like AJ McCarron. They have smart coaches, a good running game, a competent OLine, and really good WRs...a rookie QB who is smart and efficient like McCarron could do really well there. Emery panicked because he couldn't make the hard decision IMO. NFL owners are fickle and I think he knew he would only have a couple years to prove his value so rather than make the hard decision that would make them more competitive for the future, he stuck with his overrated QB who will probably end up getting him and Trestman fired (as he has done for Mike Shannahan and Lovie Smith).

Which is harder to accomplish if your QB is Jay Cutler. Tony Romo and Jay are the same QB. Good enough to keep fans interested but more than qualified to tank a game or season at any time. They are what they are and never changing.
nothing holds an NFL team up like having a lot of cash tied up in a position for a mediocre guy. Better to let him walk and try to find someone that can really get it done for your team.
Jay at a few million a year while you search for your difference maker isn't so bad. Jay at 15 million is simply awesome if you are a Packer fan.
By the end of this deal Cutler is Carson Palmer.
An old guy with a strong arm that throws a ton of picks.. Jay isn't going to change his stripes, he is just going to lose some mobility over the years.

Says more about the lack of quality starting QB material in the NFL than anything. I thought Jay played pretty well on Sunday and he certainly wasn't the reason for the loss, but when you're 1-9 against your rival the details don't matter much.
