His film is very good.....& that's exactly why TT drafted him.

I don't know what kind of player Jake Ryan will turn into....but I do know he wasn't over drafted as Hawk turned out to be.

That is a strange comment.  From the scouting reports I have read, Ryan is a natural football player.  Do you know what quality is number one for natural football players?  Instincts.

Letting Cullen Jenkins walk was a huge mistake, much like the one Seattle made when they let Chris Clemons go.

GMs across the NFL make mistakes, even with all those resources at their disposal, and for some, that's all they do is make mistakes.

Thankfully, Thompson has kept his miscues to a minimum, and I believe he made a personal commitment to perform better after so many whiffs in his 2011 draft. So many teams would love to have Ted Thompson at the GM position. We are fortunate.

Value. Thompson seems to be more mindful of value in his moves. The Packers as an organization can't fiscally afford mistakes. Certainly all teams have to live under the same cap constraints, but guys like Jones have nearly unlimited funds and can eat the mi$take$ more easily than the Packers can, or so it seems.

Forgot about Jumal Rolle being let go last year in favor of Goodson. Rolle had a good season for Texas. Goodson? Hard to say what will happen with him this year. At least, he looks better than he did last year. Not sure what that says. Hoping he develops into what they envisioned.

The great Jumal Rolle has gotten a fair amount of lament from Packer Nation

But here's a couple things to consider:

Thompson knows what he's doing and so does Joe Whitt

So a better way to state this is:

" I don't understand why the Packers chose Goodson over Rolle"

The Packers had Rolle in-house long enough to see what he can do and what his ceiling was. Rolle's role was to play special teams and it was extremely unlikely that he would see the field in 2014. Goodson is better at specials and MM has commented on it last year and again during 2015 OTAs.

So on the ST front, the Packers chose Goodson over Rolle

What about on the corner front ? Goodson was drafted because he has very good man-cover skills; some of which you can't teach. He's raw and needs development but that's right in Whitt's wheelhouse. They can afford to draft a guy who needs development because they have a very talented developer.

Capers uses his corners differently than Crennel in Houston- often leaving the DBs on an island with little help. In that regard the Packers felt Goodson was a better bet going forward. They felt he was better at STs now and that he had a higher ceiling in the Capers' defense based on his man-cover skillset

That Rolle saw the field in Houston is irrelevant. That he had a better season than Goodson in 2014 is irrelevant. Goodson was a better fit short term( STs) and long term (cover corner) in Green Bay WI and that's why they kept him over Jumal

Back to what I said earlier; I don't think its fair to say the Packers erred in not keeping Rolle. A more accurate statement is to say " with our limited knowledge I don't understand the decision"

That allows for the fact that we don't know squat compared to the people at 1265 - while also conceding that indeed our front office isn't infallible

Those are fantastic points. I agree with you. That's one of the things I love about posting with other fans on forums. If you are open to opposing views, there is a lot we can learn about the game and our team.

I'd say it is somewhat relevant. He couldn't/wouldn't see the field in GB (same for Goodson) due to depth, therefore no opportunity to make "plays". Lack of talent/depth in HOU afforded him an opportunity, doesn't mean he's better than Goodson. Bill Brasky Goodson might have had 100 INTs had he been in HOU last season!

Exactly. We fans get frustrated when we can't understand why an organization makes certain moves. A lot goes on behind closed doors that even the media aren't privy to. Is the guy an idiot, does he want to be here, what's his ceiling, is he better in zone or man, etc... ?? With the available media fed info on Rolle,  it didn't seem to make sense why the Packers would "choose Goodson" over him. Goodson struggled, Rolle looked pretty good, and then when Mulumba got hurt, Thompson could have moved Rolle up with the available spot , but left the roster at 52....off to Houston. Seemed like TT could have kept him if he wanted to.  Rolle was definitely seeing an opportunity to get immediate playing time in Houston vs. Green Bay. Shields, Tramon, Hayward, House, Hyde, etc....would've be a while before he played in Titletown.

They felt he was better at STs now and that he had a higher ceiling in the Capers' defense based on his man-cover skillset

Is it wise to acquire and release talent based on fitting a coaches defense that has been as poor as Dom Caper's has been? Same could be said for Slocum special teams.

Either that argument is inaccurate or the philosophy you suggest he is applying isn't working.

Should have made the point clearer. As a DE, moved to OLB, and then moved to ILB for a year, Ryan would be hard pressed to have the instincts of a seasoned ILBer.

Like I said, maybe it was just playing on that bad Michigan D, but I just don't have the same level of enthusiasm for Ryan making an impact, especially in 2015, that others seem to possess.

I also agree Ryan was in no way overdrafted and we can only hope he has an impact similar to Linsley's impact last season.
