I think they are more likely to catch the Padres for the last wild-card spot than they are to catch the Cardinals.

Kind of disagree with this. The Cards have proven all year they can't win on the road.   They have 22 road games yet,   3 with the Padres, 3 with the Dodgers and 2 with the Brewers.  They are far from a certainty to win the division.

As far as trading for a bat, would you have traded Burnes, Woodruff, or Peraltra for a bat?   I would not have.   Would you have traded Wong and Urias for a bat?  Only if you were content to having Huria and Brosseau play everyday.   We need Jace Peterson to get well and keep getting key hits as he has done in the past.   He should be back in a day or two.

I would have prioritized getting a bat back if you were going to trade Hader.

Someday maybe we'll know what the real plan was for the deadline, but I can't imagine it was to trade Hader for another struggling veteran reliever that will leave after the season and two mid-level prospects. There had to be other deals that were linked to that that didn't end up happening.

It is easy to say that but at what cost?  Your 1-3 starters?  2 or 3 current starters or key bench players?  I would bet whatever anybody wanted in a trade was too much so Stearns said screw it.

I guess it depends on what the market for Hader really was. Could they have traded him straight up for a bat instead of for two guys that are not even top 5 prospects in the Brewers organization? Maybe that's all they could get for Hader, but if that's the case why not wait until the offseason? I'd rather have Hader than Rogers and you'll likely get at least get the two mid-level prospects that you just got for him now this offseason as well.

Boxberger, Rogers, Bush, and Williams mow them down. Williams strikes out the side.

Good to get this split and at least tread water against the Cardinals today.

I complain about how lousy the contract to Yelich is, but at least he's a serviceable MLB player. Not good, but playable. Has there ever been a player like Cody Bellinger where he was an MVP at 23 years old and looked like a sure-fire future HOFer, but then just dropped off a cliff? He did get injured, but his drop-off started before his injury. He's gone from a sure-bet HOFer to maybe out of the league before he's 30.

The homer element is strong in this thread

Let’s get excited about a split but JFC if Milwaukee ends up facing a healthy Dodgers team it’s a beatdown.

I don’t care they dealt Hader.  I care they dealt Hader and didn’t get better offensively.  That’s inexcusable given Hader’s talent.

Bush and Rogers are just guys.  If they weren’t why make that trade on the other end?

Looks like the Padres have no faith in Hader. They let Darvish start the 9th,  after 2 hits and 1 out they bring in Hader. He promptly hit a guy, walked another bringing in a run, and then allowed a sac fly.  And another hit after the sac which loaded the bases.  He then got out of the inning but Padres lost again  3-1.   After the way he pitched before leaving Brewers and the way he has pitched in San Diego the Brewers are lucky they got what they did.

Maybe scouting departments picked up on something around the league. I read something (I think in the Athletic) that interviewed an anonymous scout that said that his stuff isn't any different but he has had a problem recently tipping off his pitches. Here's a free site that mentions the same thing.

I'm certainly glad they didn't have to decide to pay him 16 million after arbitration next year after what he's shown in San Diego.

Can you imagine if the Crew hadn’t moved him and he was pitching poorly for the Brewers? Guess what people would be saying?

I didn't disagree with the trade at all since Williams has been as good as Hader for going on 3 years.

When I heard he had been traded I got excited thinking they must have gotten a power hitter to address their biggest need.

Then when I read what they got back, I was thinking that because Lemet was one of the best pitchers in baseball in 2020 that the Brewers thought a change of scenery would fix him and that was the big part of the move. Then, when they released Lemet I was puzzled that that is all they got for two post-seasons of Hader was Rogers (who has been a poor-man's version of Hader and is gone after this year) and two guys who may play in the majors in the future.

Maybe they'd been shopping Hader for a while and that was the best offer they were going to get? But the fact that they ended up with a bunch of extra pitchers (Rogers, Bush, and potentially Rosenthal) and no bats made it seem to me that more moves were planned and they hit a snag somewhere.

Lately his problem isn't stuff but location.  Hitting batters and walking guys has not much  to do with scouting.   Glad they traded him too.

I think he has gotten rattled after some rough outings so his confidence is low. It's amazing how fast a reliever can go south.

For some reason (maybe scouting, maybe just luck), the Giants have really hammered him this year.

In 3 appearances against the Giants he's given up 9 runs in two innings with 7 hits and 3 walks.  40.50 ERA, 5.00 WHIP

Against the rest of the league, he's at 34.1 innings with 10 earned runs, 19 hits, and 9 walks. 2.62 ERA, 0.84 WHIP.
