Barclay still has a few warts, but he's night-and-day different from Newhouse.
I realize it's just going into week 4 here, but for him to rank in the top 10 after facing those DL the Packers have that does say something IMO. He's done a decent job.
If only we could get a real OL coach, to help Barclay.
He's been tested hard so far this season...Ahmad Brooks, Ryan Kerrigan, and Carlos Dunlap. They all got the best of him early and then were mostly shut down the rest of the game. Dunlap battled the hardest and the longest, but even elite Tackles have trouble with that guy. I've been impressed with him, and he's only going to get better. Once he gets more experience under his belt and is a seasoned, savvy veteran I think he's going to be very reliable. Same goes for Bahktiari.

Ain't that the truth.

So, then we can trade Bulaga for Joe Thomas.
We have given up 10 sacks this year, tied for 6th worst, yet somehow I keep reading about how good our individual O lineman are..
Strange.
The whole is less than the sum of the parts. I hate this new age math crap.
Even stranger, no mention of the one lineman who has only given up 1/2 a sack with zero holding penalties. TJ Lang.
Washington, San Fran and Cincy rank 18, 23, and 26, respectively, in sacks so far. Grant it, small sample size, but those teams haven't actually torn it up in their other two games.

It could be a lot worse. They have have faced Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Brian Orakpo, Ryan Kerrigan, Michael Johnson, and Carlos Dunlap and our very young Tackles have given up only about 6 sacks between the two of them. That's the hardest stretch of pass rushers they will face this season and they held up better than anyone could have expected. So yeah I'm pretty happy with how they've performed.
Preach on brother Diggerya!

Cincy and San Fran were in the top 10 last year in Sacks.

This is also the same OL that has GB ranked 10th in rushing and 3rd in total offense.
But can they return kicks?
I'm not saying they are horrible, but they are not overly praise worthy either.
Great job run blocking this year, not so good pass blocking. I think what we are seeing is a average performance, probably over achieving, and compared to what we have watched in years past it gives the illusion of a top 10 line.
Who said anything about a top 10 line? I think their performances could easily have been worse, we've seen worse performances. Two very young Tackles who are exceeding expectations and you're still not happy? If you expected them to give up no sacks and stifle elite pass rushers then you were dreaming.
Keep in mind that although officially they may have given up a sack, there's no accounting for the circumstances about why they gave up a sack. Several of the sacks are on Rodgers for holding it too long. It's just like Rodgers 4th Quarter Comeback stat, if you look at the stat on the surface it looks bad, but if you dive into it and examine it on a case by case basis it doesn't look nearly as bad. Certainly Bahktiari and Barclay have gotten whooped a couple times, I'm not letting them off the hook, but there's a lot to feel good about with these guys.
+1
"Two very young Tackles who are exceeding expectations and you're still not happy"
I never said I'm not happy.. I'm just saying I don't agree with amount of praise some of the individuals are receiving. Barclay top 10? That's a stretch at best. Don't recall the specifics, but EDS recieved a nice review earlier as well.
As I said, they are doing well in the run game, not as well in pass pro.. It's better than I expected and am very pleased; however, I'm not willing to call him a top 10 player or heap a bumch of praise on EDS..
Want to talk about TJ Lang, I will call him a top 10 player so far this year.
Part of what makes Barclay and Bak look good on the stat sheets is getting the ball out so fast. If the pass is in the air after 2 seconds, the DL doesn't have a chance.
That's why the bengals and others have their DL try to bat down the passes- when its coming out that fast, its a lower trajectory than a deep ball
MM has crafted an offensive attack that helps out the young tackles, but takes away some of the double moves and deeper passes that GB thrived on in the past.
McCarthy is setting up future opponents for the return of the wrap-around-draw.
What's Darrell Thompson up to these days? I miss those wrap-around draws when he'd run straight into the ass of an OL and lose two yards. He may have lost two yards, but he'd do it at 200 mph.
at least he never had a butt fumble.
They are all a bunch of backups.
Pretty sure Darrell Thompson never did anything at 200 mph.
You don't remember those awesome sweeps he'd run? He'd take the ball, run directly out of bounds and the next thing you saw was a bunch of guys flying off the bench and Gatorade buckets flying everywhere.
Everything he did was at 200 mph - with his eyes closed.
I wonder if Barclay can hold up for a 16 game season. Apparently from what I have read he is not strong enought yet, needs an offseason in the weight room. I also suspect that some of the problems Sitton is having is related to him trying to help Barclay/EDS block.
Inurries have sure messed up the Packers o-line this year. On the up side the Packers should have some great training camp O-Line battles next year.
With the NFL need for tackles Newhouse sould get a nice free agent contract next year. Packer comp pick.
That would be a real trick if Sitton was helping Barclay block.
I do remember Darrell running out of bounds a lot.
I'd like to compare Darrell Thompson to the guy Green Bay wanted to draft, Emmitt Smith. Thompson was just like Smith, only bigger, faster and without the vision, balance, lateral quickness, hands, blocking and instincts.
If only we could get a real OL coach, to help Barclay.
That's why TT drafts 4 year starters, to overcome the coaching. Barclay has done a solid job. Borat has a couple of rookie mistakes but is doing a great job. Both of these guys are definitely more physical, mauler types for Tackles, which we all know is like the 27th most important position on the team.
If they'd went to Brown nobody would know who they are.
I thought the Ivy League was a botanical superhero group.
Undrafted, what more is there to say.
Even stranger, no mention of the one lineman who has only given up 1/2 a sack with zero holding penalties. TJ Lang.
TJ Lang is the #6 OG on PFF. He's been fantastic.
And I wouldn't be so fast to write of Barclay being a Top 10 tackle as a "stretch". He's given up only 2 sacks in 136 pass blocking snaps. Not too shabby.
Just another player that fell into TT's lap
Mandarich used to fall a lot too.
Then again there's Will Whittaker
