On Sunday against Detroit, Davante Adams surpassed a nearly 80-year old Packer record held by Don Hutson when Adams caught a TD pass in his 8th consecutive game. It prompted Wayne and Larry to say something to the effect of "Don Hutson predates us... and that's pretty hard to do!"
Recently, a retired WR from the Minnesota Football team made the bombastic statement that he was the best WR of all time, followed by his friend Terrell Owens, with Jerry Rice third or fourth. No love for Don Hutson , who basically revolutionized the WR position by creating route patterns that WRs of today still use.
Which of Don Hutson's achievements impresses you most? In looking him up on Wikipedia, I saw something about that 1942 season that pretty starkly shows the contrast between the old statistics (especially for QBs) and the modern pass-happy game (which I've stated before I think really went into ovedrive after the 2004 AFC Championship game and Peyton Manning's whining about the way the Patriot DBs treated the Colts' receivers):
Hutson's single season record of 17 touchdown receptions in 1942 stood for 42 years until broken by receiver Mark Clayton in 1984, a year in which Miami's quarterback Dan Marino had more completions (362) than the entire 1942 Packers team's pass attempts (330).
(Note that 1984 was also a 16-game season, while Hutson was only playing 12 games in a season.)
