Just looking back at the Crew with Doug Melvin's trades, I think he's done a good job. Looking at the ones since they became contenders (without looking back at deals like the Sexson or El Caballo trades). Going from memory....

Linebrink for Thatcher, Garrison and Inman - Crew trying to make a stretch run, I didn't like seeing Inman go at that time. He's done nothing. But I still think the trade wasn't worth it since Linebrink didn't do anything, while Thatcher has at least been a partially serviceable reliever ever since for the Padres.

Sabathia for LaPorta, Brantley, Zack Jack and someone else who I forget - Trade was worth every piece. Only Brantley has panned out, but you can live with losing him with what CC did for Milwaukee down the stretch creating a buzz, putting fans in the stands, and single handedly getting Milwaukee into the playoffs. If my memory is correct, the sandwich pick they got for losing CC got us Kentrail Davis. I forget who was picked in the 2nd round with the NYY pick.

Ray Durham for a couple guys I forget - Durham played a big role down the stretch with that wildcard team when Weeks was ineffective and injured. Good trade.

Carlos Gomez for JJ Hardy - A big positive. Hardy has since resurrected his career, but he was run out of Minnesota too. Gomez is a great defensive everyday CF that has seemed to turn the corner with the bat. With Hardy gone it paved the way for Escobar to play and increase his value for.....

Zack Greinke and Yuni Betancourt for Escobar, Cain, Odorizzi and Jeffress - I call this a win. Escobar, Cain and Odorizzi are still good looking players. But Greinke helped win a division and get the team to the NLCS. Turning him into what they later got makes this even better.

Nyjer Morgan for Cutter Dykstra - took Washington's crap and gave them a player that hasn't advanced past A ball. Morgan played a big role in that NLCS team. Big win for the Crew.

Shaun Marcum for Brett Lawrie - close call. Marcum was necessary to make a run to the NLCS. Lawrie was a big time prospect who has had some moments. But he seems to have stuttered. This thing is a draw.

K-Rod for a couple guys we'll never miss - Great trade to put the team over the edge in that bullpen. Mistake was offering him arby after the season. But K-Rod was a big part of the bullpen. Another win for the Crew.

Jerry Hairston for somebody I forget - another in-season winner. Hairston helped put Yuni to the bench for the NLCS stretch run.

Jean Segura, Johnny Helweg and Ariel Pena for Greinke - great trade! Got the SS of the future completing the circle of losing Escobar. Helweg looks like a pretty good prospect, and Pena is gravy at this point. For less than 1/2 of the season of Greinke, this is a really good haul.

Of 10 trades that I remember, the Brewers only "lose" on the Linebrink trade, which turns out was a minor trade. Perhaps the Marcum deal will come back to haunt, but it hasn't happened yet. Essentially the Crew got:

1/2 season of Linebrink
1/2 season of CC Sabathia
1/2 season of Durham
Carlos Gomez
1.5 seasons of Greinke
1 season of Yuni (pre-renaissance)
2 seasons of Marcum
2 seasons of Tony Plush
2 seasons of K-Rod
Jean Segura
Johnny Helweg
Ariel Pena

And the only guys they'll potentially miss are Jake Odorizzi and Brett Lawrie as Hardy and Esco got replaced by Segura, and Cain and Brantley got replaced by Gomez.

Melvin's done well....anyone disagree?

I think Melvin has done a great job...even with the occasional miss.

I will also add that the players he has given up haven't produced that much. Jury is still out on Lawrie and I suspect that will be one we wish he could take back (although I understood it completely). But in all reality, the guy that has produced the most was a throw in (Nelson Cruz).
Lawrie is 23 years old and at about 740 plate appearance. So far has 22 HRs and 78 RBIs. His OPS is 771.

Maybe he'll blow up and become a 35/110 type of guy, but after getting 150 ABs in Toronto in 2011 and having an OPS of 953, he's definitely come back to earth. Maybe scouts have figured out something on him and he hasn't adjusted yet. All in all, I'd take what we got for Marcum for Lawrie every time.

Overall, Melvin's been very successful in the trade market. Where's he's had problems is overpaying in free agency for average veteran pitching, but maybe that's what you have to do to be competitive in Milwaukee.
Melvin has done a pretty good job. This franchise is devoid of "superstar" potential in the minors, but they seem to be able to plug the holes with their developmental and scrap heap team even with these guys that werent supposed to amount to that much. Fiers last season, Henderson, Lalli, Maldonado, Schaefer, Davis, Narveson, Estrada... and more
Well, is it time to start thinking about the future?

After struggling for most of the season, Yovani Gallardo has now tossed 14 consecutive scoreless innings. With the Brewers in last place and Gallardo controlled affordably through 2015 ($11.25MM in 2014 and a 2015 club option worth $13MM), the right-hander's name has popped up as a trade candidate (including by MLBTR's Tim Dierkes two weeks ago) and he has heard the talk. "We'll see what happens," Gallardo told reporters including MLB.com's Adam McCalvy. "It's definitely a little bit different. It's the first time I've been in a situation like this -- not to say that anything is going to happen." McCalvy reports Gallardo can block trades to ten teams, but Gallardo acknowledges even he doesn't know the identity of all of them.

I think Yo would bring a really good haul of talent. I also think trading Aram would give you something nice in return. Outside of Gomez, Luc, Braun and Jean (who I don't think there is a chance of trading), Aoki would be the next best bet for some kind of return. I actually think he would be the easiest guy to recover from.

Henderson might be another option.
Ramirez- yes
Aoki- yes
Gomez- hell f**k no

The reason he leads the league in WAR is his defensive ability. Sure the hitting is great, and ir it has a shelf life so be it. but to have that elite ability up the middle is how you win rings. They need to keep that on the team.

You prob don't get anything for Weeks anyway, so no trade there.

Gallado is interesting. The team needs young arms. Ones with star potential. We know what we hav in Gallardo- solid but unspectacular and losing velocity every year. If you can get a haul for him (2 elite AAA prospects on par with Segura), I say pull the trigger. They need elite arms, not solid ones.

Its sad, but it might be what gets them over the hump in 2014-2015.
Maybe it shouldn't be mentioned in this thread, but I also credit Melvin for not re-signing Shaun Marcum for this year. If memory serves, Marcum didn't do much after the all-star break last year, seemed to run out of gas about the same time the year before, and seems to have struggled this year with the Mets.

I've always heard that some of the best trades are those that aren't made. This is not a trade but a move Melvin didn't make.
I am now officially onboard with being a mega-seller starting now. Only guys off limits are Braun and Segura. I wanted to include LuCroy but I think if they got a great offer, maybe move him as well. Have a solid guy to step in in Maldy.

I say this with frustration but I also think it's the right move for the franchise at the moment. I commend Melvin and Company for going all in and giving us a couple of playoff appearances after years of futility.

Yup, I would even sell Braun.. His price may be down right now with the questions about future suspensions, so maybe next year or the offseason.

Sell everything except Segura and hope to be back in the mix by 2016. Some people will argue we are a few starters away from being back in the playoffs. Sure, we might sneak in, but you need studs on the mound to win it. Only way MKE is getting those these days is through the draft or buying them when they are still prospects. We have nothing on the farm that would net us a stud pitcher like CC or Zack.

â€ĒThe Orioles can forget about acquiring Yovani Gallardo as they are on his ten-team no-trade list and the Brewers would prefer to make a clean deal with no restrictions. Meanwhile, the Brewers' pitchers are getting hot at the right time - Gallardo, Francisco Rodriguez, and John Axford have all looked strong as of late and could draw interest from contending clubs.

Day off tomorrow, Krod and Ax should be traded by noon.

not a trade, but a FA pick up.

Owings the Crew’s next Kieschnick?

Owings, 30, signed a Minor League contract with the Brewers after opting out of his Triple-A deal with the Nationals, for whom he had been working exclusively as a hitter. He was expected to make his first appearance as a pitcher since 2011 on Friday night at rookie-level Arizona, but was pushed to Monday because of what Ash termed some minor arm soreness.

Can't hurt
