Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media on Monday. Here are some highlights from his news conference:

On linebacker Jamari Lattimore and cornerback Sam Shields, both injured during Sunday's 26-21 victory over the New England Patriots:

Sam Shields had a concussion, so he'll go through the protocol. Jamari, he felt a little better today than he did yesterday. I don't have any gauge on their practice participation.

On this week's schedule, given a Monday night game:

We're going to treat Thursday like a Wednesday. I wanted players to have an extra day off this week. You look at years past, we've played on Thanksgiving every other year, I like that little break before fourth quarter of season.

On a late-season Monday night game:

Everybody goes through it. It's definitely an honor to play on "Monday Night Football." It's something you plan ahead for. Time of the year, it's probably a little more challenge this year than other years.

On the offense's struggles in the red zone:

Just things we can control. Just really comes down to execution. Give the New England Patriots' red-zone defense credit. We'll practice red zone. It'll definitely be a highlighted this week.

On Sunday's victory:

It's the way you want to go into fourth quarter (of the season). It's definitely something we can build off of. We've had a very good month of November.

On the rookies' play against the Patriots:

It's great anytime players, rookies, second-year players step up when given an opportunities. Three rookies have done a good job of taking advantage of opportunities. (Wide receiver) Davante (Adams) was at the forefront of that Sunday.

On guard Josh Sitton:

Josh is a heck of a football player. I don't think he probably gets the recognition he deserves. I just think what he's dealing with medically, it's a credit to him.

On quarterback Aaron Rodgers' handoffs after injuring his left hand:

That's really conversation on the bench with (quarterback coach) Alex Van Pelt and checking in with him. They made the adjustments they needed.

On staying on an even keel after the win:

I think they were mesmerized getting another day off. A lot went into the game. Probably more tired than anything. I think this is my most consistent team in my nine years here. Just the way they prepare. You don't have a lot of personalities to deal with.

On second-year linebacker Sam Barrington:

I think Sam is starting to hit his stride. At some point for all your young players. the game tends to slow down a little bit. I think that's definitely where Sam is.

On seeing what others could do if receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb were taken away:

Davante has continued to improve throughout the year. He's a natural receiver. He's gifted. He has good size, ability to separate.

On using Cobb out of the backfield:

It's just another part of our offense. There's schemes that you do. It was really getting to some things that give you some information. You put together a plan you have primary concepts and secondary. Based off how they reacted, we went with it probably a few more times than we thought. You never get into all your packages.

On getting 70 plays on offense:

You have the ball for 70 plays, it's more opportunities for your players and (running back) Eddie (Lacy) to touch the ball. Passing game-wise, it kind of takes care of itself. The ball goes to the open player. I think that's why you continue to see Aaron go through six, eight, nine targets early on.

On the Patriots keeping a safety down:

That's how they play. They're going to stop the run first. That was pretty much the way they practiced it all week. A lot of adjustments in their fronts and things. They did some things against us we haven't seen this year and be proactive in the adjustments.

On the Patriots' three- and four-man rush:

It's been a while. It was a very disciplined rush plan. For the most part, they kept Aaron in the pocket. Our offensive line was exceptional.

On Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers' game plan:

You go through your plan and offense and defense is the same. We felt they were going to come in here and try to run the football, that was a primary focus of theirs. Run defense calls, we hit the target. We had a few alignment issues that created some bad situations for us, but we'll learn from that.

Ah, Falcons week...brings me back to these great qoutes back in 2011

“We have better players, we have better coaches, we’re a better team,” Raji said after the Packers (5-0) rallied from a 14-0 deficit – and did so without both their starting offensive tackles – to score the final 25 points of the game to beat the Falcons (2-3). “Usually better teams win games. We settled down and played our game, and we won.”

“It’s definitely another dagger in their chests,” Raji continued. “They’ve been talking the whole offseason, they were talking before the game. We don’t worry about that. We’re the champions. We play like champions. We coach like champions. People who talk generally don’t get to where they want to go. And obviously with this team, it’s evident.”

“We adjusted better, we had better players, we had better coaches, so we played better,” said Raji, who didn’t sound like a man expecting a playoff rematch. “I think the (New Orleans) Saints are a better team. They have a better quarterback. The team’s a little bit better. This team is OK."

On staying on an even keel after the win:

I think they were mesmerized getting another day off. A lot went into the game. Probably more tired than anything. I think this is my most consistent team in my nine years here. Just the way they prepare. You don't have a lot of personalities to deal with.

That is one of the greatest parts about this team. You don't see a lot of "Look at Me"

Not verbatim, but I'll bet you FreeSafety's money that this is where it's going.  One of the good things about that Skippy thread is that I'm seeing what the carnival barkers are saying without actually listening to any of them.  Seems that CAP95's very good friend Colin Cowherd was calling this game a 'setup' by Belichick, which is almost the same thing.

Carnival barkers bark, droolers follow.  Expect to see this type of stupidity as the week progresses.

Here are the results after the 1st quarter of each of the last five home games at Lambeau

Green Bay 13, *New England 0
Green Bay 17, *Philadelphia 0
Green Bay 14, Chicago 0
Green Bay 21, Carolina 0
Green Bay 14, Minnesota 0

*New England and Philly are both Top 5 offenses

The Packers defense is pitching shutouts to start the game and they aren't giving up much in the 2nd quarter either. Those 5 teams combined managed 23 points in the first half

So while some want to ascribe the defenses' improvement to the awesomeness of Rodgers -

Remember this:

* None of these teams arrived at Lambeau thinking they would shut down Packers offense

* All of them game -planned to score lots of points to keep up with GB

* None of these teams had abandoned their game plans so early in the contest.

Time to give the defense a hat tip for their role in this 2014 home domination

In fact, if you dump all the garbage points that teams piled on long after the game was  decided - the Packers defense is giving up 17.8 points per game which puts them at number 2 in the entire League

I realize that is selective sorting, but it does offer some insight on the improvements we're seeing.

Long ways to go, but the arrow is pointing up imo as the resident blind homer of X4

From Football Outsiders:

"Rodgers isn't just playing the best football of any quarterback currently in the league, he's likely playing the best football that you will ever see in your lifetime. "

Many QBs over the years with other-worldly physical attributes (strong arm, quick release, mobile). Many who were students of the game and could dissect defenses (handle the blitz, stealth-like play-action). But it's a very short list that could/can do all of it and Rodgers arguably is at the top of that list.

From MM Thursday, post-practice:

@RobDemovsky: It's a knee for Josh Boyd and a back for Mike Daniels.

@ByRyanWood: #Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Mike Daniels was held out with back issue: "We'll see where he is tomorrow. It's a day-to-day thing."

@RobDemovsky: McCarthy: Sam [Shields] is part of the concussion protocol. It's a process.

@RobDemovsky: McCarthy if the players were energized after 3 days off: "Hell, they better be. Got an extra day off. They're back into it."

Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media following practice Thursday. Here are some highlights of his news conference:

Injury report: Did not participate – DL Josh Boyd (knee), DL Mike Daniels (back), LB Jamari Lattimore (ankle), CB Sam Shields (concussion). Limited – T.J. Lang (ankle), G Josh Sitton (toe).

On Mike Daniels:

Held him out of practice with some back soreness. We'll see how he is tomorrow. It's a day-to-day thing.

On Sam Shields:

He's part of the concussion protocol. He has to go through that process.

On Davon House/Casey Hayward:

Davon has done a good job. They've both done a lot of good things. We have a lot of depth in our secondary.

On Falcons:

I think we have to look at the whole thing. Look how they've played the last four games. Their defense under Mike Nolan, three turnovers against Arizona. Their run defense is tough. We haven't run ball well the last three, four times we've played them. He's extremely creative. 3-4, 4-3 whatever it takes. He'll put together a challenging game plan together.

On if players are refreshed:

They better be. No, I thought practice was good today. It started a little slow. We've had a pretty productive day so far.

On receivers:

It might be their best personnel aspect of their team. Anytime you have two big targets like that, it's a big challenge.

On breaking down their last four games:

You have to take a hard look at last four, five games. There's always things you look at whole year.

On Matt Ryan:

I think Matt Ryan is an excellent quarterback. When young QBs come into the league and hit a certain level, their game slows down and understand everything. I thought Matt did that during the early part of his career.

On trying to get to 10 wins:

Veteran leadership is one of your biggest keys to your culture. There's things we go through.

On run defense:

I think since the bye week, we've improved the most with our run defense. I'm sure that'll be an emphasis. They ran the ball very well last week against Arizona.
